Jack Thompson Press Conference Video on New Mexico Lawsuit

September 25, 2006 -

Check out this video from KRQE-13 in Albuquerque.

It's from today's Jack Thompson press coverage announcing the new lawsuit against Sony, Take-Two and Rockstar.

It makes everything perfectly clear - except for what role video games may have played. That's not so clear, other than Thompson's contention that they are "murder simulators".

Wow, now it only takes a few months of obsessive play to become an expert killer? The army is clearly using the wrong tools...

"Common sense" science, the science of people who's slogan is "Think of the children" and "Garbage in, garbage out" seems to be the science of the day, it seems. Despite the fact that I know an axe is sharp, that it can pierce trees and most definately skin, that it can kill people, that I've seen people killed by axes in movies and read about it in books, that I stepped on one and it gave me a nasty cut when I was younger, I never could have figured out to kill or maim people with it until I saw it in Liberty City Stories earlier this year.

This is also the same science various witch-hunters have used to "prove" the existance of raping demons and witches- a lot of people say they've seen it therefore it must be true. This kind of science was also referenced in that one sorry editorial, the one lamenting the fact the courts found no science that games hurt minors, despite the courts not asking anybody on the street if constantly playing violent games is bad. (man that was a sorry article)

Has anybody here seen that one APA article stating that liberal children were smarter and more confident than conservative children of the same age? I would like to find it if anybody knows what I'm talking about.

I've submitted a comment to the Daily Mail about how Thompson was thrown off the Alabama case. We'll see if it gets through.

grombar - Good luck on getting your comment published :)

I posted a comment about how jack thompson had a very low level of legal credibility, and also pointed out that they skirted the abuse angle.

*Gets out popcorn* This should be fun

I read the story on grumpy gamer and saw that jack still likes to send one liner insult e-mails. That got me thinking, maybe this guy has a natural tallent to be in the fortune cookie busniness, I mean come on the fortunes right now suck, they need a little more spice. Imagine opening your fortune cookie and being greeted with your fortune "Hoooooah!" or why not "Rockstar is doomed" we could even change the name of the fotune cookies to "Cookie Based Fortune Simulators"

Ok I am done with that, in all seriousness Jack needs to honestly see the light and stop blaming games for everything a kid does.

Wow, now it only takes a few months of obsessive play to become an expert killer? The army is clearly using the wrong tools… -Jabrwock

Holy hell if this is the case then lets see what training I would have
-Master of over 40 different types of Martial Arts
-Mater with every weapon known to man(and some that aren't even around yet)
-Professional Pilot of every aircraft
-Professional Driver/Theif/Assasin/Mech Pilot/Attorney(^^)/Surgeon
-God (Thank you Act Raiser)
-Master in all Schools of Magic

And that is just the top of the list.....I could go on all day lol.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jack employs the "tried and not true" the Army uses video game simulations in order to make soldiers "more efficient". My response to that is that the Army uses these simulations in order to teach and practice military "tactics". This can be applied the same way to Madden football in which a player might learn such things as offensive plays, defensive schemes, and general terminology. I wish that I could show up in court just to make his theories look the utter garbage it really is.

"Sony is named because Posey had a PS2. Microsoft is not named because he didn’t have an XBox."

Also, the Xbox has built-in Parental Controls so if Cody had the Xbox version, Microsoft can't be held accountable as they provided parents with control over what their children play.

No mention of this in the Baton Rouge Advocate or the Houma Courier.

I couldn't find a USA Today, however(they still had yesterday's paper in the machine when I checked at 10:45 in the morning).

No major publicity for Jacky Boy.

I personally think that it is LAWSUIT time. Does Doug Lowestein have an e-mail address?

Also,Demontestament, the fortune cookie joke was BOSS. :)

Grahamr,

I agree. It's time for somebody to file a countersuit against Thompson for libel and slander. It worked for WWE against the Parent Trash Cult.

Yea!

He needs to be exposed for what he really is. and we need to use him as an example for what a anti-violence activist SHOULD'T become.

For once,i would appriciate it if there was a critic of games who DIDN'T relentlessly slander games and actully cared about media violence(Other then D. walsh, and Possibly the guy from Pennsyvania.)

In case anybody's still wondering, the military version of Doom teaches "Ammo conservation, the importance of protecting your rifleman and chain of command in event of KIAs". Nothing about violence desensitization, not officially.

Hmmmm...

http://spong.com/article/10760/Jack+Thompson+Tells+Radio+Interviewer+He+Wants+to+Kill!?cb=868

In particular....

"I live in Miami, I'm not giving up my gun because if somebody comes in my house I want to be able to kill him," he said.

and

"We've got more guns than people over here," he said. "I would prefer nobody have any guns, but now that the guns are out there, the genie is sort of out of the bottle. Nobody has come up with a way to get the guns from the bad guys as well as the good guys, so that if you pass a law that said everybody has to turn in their guns and we'll melt them down and make a statue of Charlton Heston out of it or something, the bad guys, the criminals would still hold on to their guns and us good guys who are law abiding would be giving them up."

Yes Jack, what kind of idiot would bundle up all the normal law abiding people with criminals, it's unthinkable isn't it?

I'm having promlems with the spam filter too. I tried to talk about the videos about online predators and games, and the spam filter got me. I think that it doesn't like the term (*cereal raiypist*)

Let's hope that got through.

Ironically, Jack Thompson is himself evidence against gamer violence. So, playing violent games turns people into killers, right? Thompson has called millions of gamers across America and the rest of the world mentally challenged psychos. The result to date: One website sent him some flowers and a young teenager once phoned him up and made unspecified threats.

Why is Thompson still alive and unharmed if the people he has openly derided are mindless killers? Why isn't the news reporting on the death threats he must be receiving? Could it be because gamers don't actually want to hurt real people?

Although what you say is true, facts like that will be ignored by the mainstream media. unless he are confronted,on camera, and effectively destroyed in a debate, people will probably belive most everything he says

Posted this on that Daily Mail article:

The difference between the shape of a gun and the shape of a video game controller is substantial. I would think that common sense would dictate that the only thing this boy could have learned from such a game is that shooting someone will seriously injure or kill them. I would also think that any fourteen year old would already know that, particularly in this case, given that the boy worked on a ranch. He was, in all likelihood, taught to use a gun by his father, so that he would be able to shoot coyotes and other predators that threatened the family's livestock. I suppose my overall point is that no video game can train a person to kill.

My name for the post is Jared Watkins. Here's to hoping it gets through.

This is a crazy world. We keep assault weapons legal, but discuss banning video games. It seems to me that the gory video games and violent themes are just an excuse to use state of the art graphics; what makes a video game fun isn't so much whether it's violent or not, it's how challenging it is; those that are competitive will inspire the same sort of agression as a game of football will; shall we ban football too? We are seeing an erosion of our rights as a people right before our very eyes. What's next? Will we arrest people for possesion of video games? I wonder if Dick Chaney shot his friend in the face because he was playing a little GTA in his spare time? They oughta make a video game: one person shooter shooting your friends in the face call it Vice President City

I wish that I could show up in court just to make his theories look the utter garbage it really is.

Cool.

Goth_SkunkAs such, the first playthrough is always going to be the most evocative.01/30/2015 - 3:47pm
Goth_SkunkSo while branching storyline is hallmarked as a feature of the game, the storyline never stays branched for too long. There is a linear story that may branch at points, but each branch always comes right back to the main line further down the road.01/30/2015 - 3:46pm
Goth_SkunkMy biggest gripe about it though would have to be that its replay value sucks. I quickly learned that apart from a few key decisions you make, most choices end up not being relevant because something terrible happens anyway.01/30/2015 - 3:45pm
Goth_SkunkI *love* The Walking Dead. Like I said, I played Season 1 through in one go, and subsequently pre-purchased Season 2 in its entirety sight-unseen.01/30/2015 - 3:43pm
Andrew EisenBy the by, I take it you're a fan of Telltale's Walking Dead? I'm one of the very few who really doesn't like it. Bums me out.01/30/2015 - 3:39pm
Andrew EisenI think we're safe with stuff like Life is Strange, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, and TellTale's games. I was thinking more along the lines of D4. It's genuinely up in the air whether we'll get a conclusion to that story or not.01/30/2015 - 3:33pm
Goth_SkunkUltimately, from this potentially ignorant perspective, it's the gamer who assumes the risk, not the developer. I don't approve. Fortunately, I'm only paying $5 (CDN, no less), so that's money I can easily write off if I'm disappointed.01/30/2015 - 3:32pm
Goth_SkunkIf I'm wrong, and the unthinkable should happen where the developer ends up aborting production of the rest of the episodes, bundle purchasers would be understandably upset. Even moreso if attempting to get a refund turns out to be a hassle.01/30/2015 - 3:30pm
Goth_SkunkThere is an option on XBL to purchase all episodes in a bundle. Pay full price now, get the rest of the episodes as they're released. I would like to think this means that the other episodes are in fact done and ready.01/30/2015 - 3:29pm
Andrew EisenCatch 22 sometimes. Some gamers don't want to buy it if there's no guarantee the whole thing will come out and the whole thing can't come out unless enough people buy the early installments.01/30/2015 - 3:17pm
Goth_SkunkI sincerely hope this trend towards episodic games is not done so because the developer only had enough capital to produce the first 1/5th of the story and is banking on making enough money from the sales of that fifth to produce the rest.01/30/2015 - 3:16pm
Goth_SkunkThat being said, I want to try Life is Strange to get my feet wet.01/30/2015 - 3:13pm
Andrew EisenI'm that way too. I'll wait until the whole thing is out. Same goes for DVDs of TV shows. I'll wait for the season set.01/30/2015 - 3:13pm
Goth_SkunkIf an episodic game is really good, and the time between episodes is more than a week, I'm more inclined to wait for the rest of the episodes to all come out than to try playing it episode by episode at launch date.01/30/2015 - 3:12pm
Goth_SkunkAs someone who played through TWD Season 1 entirely in one day, and then played Season 2 episode by episode when they each came out, I strongly agree with this sentiment.01/30/2015 - 3:11pm
Goth_SkunkFrom what I've been hearing, people haven't been buying it because they're sick of episodic games where they have to wait 6 weeks or more between episodes and they'd rather just wait for the whole thing to come out at once.01/30/2015 - 3:10pm
Andrew EisenNot sure what GamerGate could do to dissuade people from buying a game they'd otherwise be interested in or why it would even want to but I agree, I think the premise is interesting and look forward to learning more about how it actually plays.01/30/2015 - 2:58pm
Goth_SkunkAnd for what it's worth, I saw Life is Strange advertised today on XBL, and the premise looks very, very intriguing. I'm going to buy it today and give it a shot.01/30/2015 - 2:42pm
Goth_SkunkI'm hearing rumours that the recently released game Life is Strange is not selling very well on Steam, and that GamerGate is being blamed as a result. It's just a rumour though.01/30/2015 - 2:42pm
