A Montana judge faces controversy after admitting to using profanity and graphic language in a chat room.
Yes, that's right - profanity on the Internet. Shocking, huh?
As reported by the
Great Falls Tribune, Justice of the Peace Sam Harris talked dirty in chat rooms associated with
Gore: Ultimate Soldier (screen shot at left), which he played up to six hours per day, more than 5,000 hours in all.
Harris' online activities were exposed by a local attorney who recalled with apparent bitterness how Harris turned in a fellow judge for perusing gay porn on a county PC. The colleague was relieved of his duties and later committed suicide.
Harris' online comments - at least the ones cited by the newspaper - were crude but fairly mundane remarks about things like his vasectomy. What GP finds more shocking is that someone could spend 5,000 hours with a crappy game like
Gore.
"I'd like to deny it, but I can't lie about it," said Harris.

At least he has the decency to own up in the face of evidence, though; I get the feeling others in his position wouldn't be as quick to admit fault.
Now if he was looking for sexual encounters online I could understand the need to report him, but profanity, even in the heaviest of uses, should only warrant a slap on the wrist, and maybe across the face.
Unless he's the guy who said he'd "$%^# my mom in her #)$ while $(%*ing my dog"
Then he deserved it
OH NOES!!!!!!11!!1
And it definitely sounds a little overblow to say: "He was looking up GAY Pr0n!" and then later have him commit suicide...I mean suicide is pretty damn serious...looking at gay porn, not so much serious.
Also its sad that the man was ridiculed so much he felt the need to end his life.
According to the weblogs, he's not been doing it from a court computer. The traps they set months ago showed nothing, so I really don't see how this is an issue.
How Hoooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiible! -.-
Because storing and sharing porn on a pc owned by the COUNTY, is somehow not a bad thing...
The only thing he might have been out of line about is talking smack about the lawyers because that MIGHT raise issues about his ability to stay neutral. Then again, he might be saying that because it's true... and since I'm no no position to know how good or bad those lawyers are, I'm reserving judgement on that count.
As far as I know, public and government offices usually don't like you looking up pornography of any kind on their computers, so this judge was merely doing his civic duty.
Oh noes! A judge on teh intrawebs? What will happen next? Will we change the internet from tubes to WIRES?
Their findings? He hadn't used County equipment to chat or play games at all. Not once, in 3 months of straight monitoring.
Sounds like this story is more about how a bitter lawyer decided to get revenge over the loss of life of his colleague.
Anyway this whole thing is stupid,we need a IQ comity to watch over government stupidity like we have a ethics comity to govern governmental behavior...just think of all the money it would save!
As for the former's suicide, It seems unreasonable to me to lay it all at Harris' feet. Braindead1, you were surprised by someone going that far over what -seems- like a minor incident, but you forget that Montana is on the whole a fairly conservative state, and there are some communities whose "community standards" make Rick Santorum look like a flaming, hippie commie-sympathizer. In other words, if it was revealed to the world at large that he was looking at gay porn the social consequences might have been hard to deal with.
Though I feel sorry for the Judge, I REALLY hope this spreads to the lawyer profession soon.
but technically nothing wrong except the county pc... but we are a conservative state so anything that hints of homesexuality let alone actual porn is instantly attacked as the worst thing ever in all existance
Currently people associate deviant sexuality with high level fetish, effectively making "gay porn" a more extreme version of porn. Thus somewhat justifying the distinction. In contrast, Oscar Wilde believed that it is the social stigma and produced guilt that causes deviant sexualities to persue extremes.
I'm not saying that I agree with either of these sentiments, but secks is generally a somewhat tender topic anyway, so I can at least understamd the reasoning behind many more extreme conservitive factions in regards to strapped on controversies. That is, the ones that ride on the back of the already controversial materials.
Sounds more like the hidden deviant's have to draw and quarter as well as hang a innocent person whos only "appeared" to do something wrong so they can feel ok during their private fetish sessions.....
ewww, the I deserve it psycho-extension. By saying they've done enough good to satify their conscionce they indulge in what they perceive is evil and destroy themeselves through the process. I say ew because this is the most external and active ethical loophole people utilise to hurt themeselves and especially others. Serial Killers have a tendency to adopt this behavior.
But all focuses aside, I'm not sure Harris in peticular fits that perticular tendency. He might have done the same if it had been normal porn, or in general might be a little overly legalistic as far as computer use goes. I mean he never used the court computer for games in the "three months" they were monitoring him. I would've had that shit clogged the hell up.
So I simply amuse myself with the circumstance of it all.
I'll sumarize the article by the way: Gamer uses naughty word.
Next up:

And please, oh please,

Will it be in real life next time?
Stat tuned for my next post where I will reveal a moment in history where a German man was being Anti-Semetic. And maybe, if I dug deep enough... an Austrian too.
Oh please, just because people think they don't understand the internet, they shouldn't just think of it like a global sleaze-palace.
I find it nice that a politician from Montana, of all places, can use the internet and play an online game and blend in just like another gamer. Hell, I might just send him my PC and a copy of Counter-Strike with a note attached saying "Go nuts."
But secks is often a penetrating issue emotionally. While I find it odd that he chose to commit suicide considering that the pump-judge is still alive, it's often the little things that drive people into tight spaces. Maybe they were even friends and he was trying to help bring his issues out of the closet. But secks was obviously too painfull for him to address and even a friends attempts to lubricate a realization can be later discovered to be more of a super glue. So he got stuck psychologically and killed himself to stop the reality. I'm sure Harris feels pretty sore about tjis issue anyway, if not, then there were still better ways of getting even.
I'm not sure if I'm more sickened by what the gay-porn judge was doing (mostly because he was doing it with tax-payer money) or by the fact that Judge Harris is now in trouble for doing something protected by his 1st Amendment rights in his own home while off-duty.
This case better be thrown out of court!
If you would go and read them, you would see that the "bitter lawyer" said he really could care less about the Judge's GORE habits. The problem, according to this lawyer, was that Harris testified as a Judge under oath that he had all these mental problems from seeing three gay porn images, while he was typing all kinds of this stuff himself.
It also appears that while Harris didn't use the government computer for the 3 months he was 'trapped' (he posted online for 4 years) he was typing messages all during the day when he either was at work or definitely should have been.
Also, while one of you said he didn't do anything unethical that's probably wrong too. According to the judge rules in Montana, Judge Harris is supposed to keep even his personal life "above reproach." Talking about his stiffy in a public chatroom is pretty unbecoming for a judge.
I really don't care what he did, but I think you guys who are painting him as an innocent victim should go read the whole article.
