ESRB Boss Scheduled to Attend Ratings Summit

October 6, 2006
The ESRB isn't commenting, but GamePolitics has learned that Patricia Vance, president of the video game industry's beleagured rating organization, is listed as a panelist for the upcoming National Summit on Video Games, Youth & Public Policy.

The two-day conference is being held later this month in Minnesota and is sponsored by the National Institute on Media & the Family as well as Iowa State University.

The ESRB has had a contentious relationship with NIMF and its president, Dr. David Walsh in the past. Vance was not on the first agenda published by GamePolitics on September 28th.

However the latest draft seen by GP shows Vance participating in a one-hour "Ratings, Research & Policy" panel. Other panelists are Dr. Joanne Cantor of the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Kim Thompson of Harvard, Dr. Douglas Gentile of Iowa State and NIMF. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Dale Kunkel of the University of Arizona.

GP: While there is some risk for the ESRB in participating, on balance it's likely a good thing. Given all of the criticism and congressional legislation currently directed at the rating process, it can't hurt for the video game industry to be more forthcoming.

The only question is, how seriously will anybody from the ESRB be taken?

Looking through the other people on the list of speakers, none of them seem to be pro-game; I can't see Ms. Vance making much of an impact.

Honestly, I'm wondering if they'll even let her get a word in edgeways.

I have to agree. It seems like Vance is walking into a trap.

But let's just wait and see.

They're all just jealous because she's so cute.

I noticed they haven't removed Craig "I'm a lying douchebag" anderson from the list, so they still have 0 Credibility. When you feature a man whose research was classified in court as "Flaw, Biased, and clearly agenda driven", you toss any claims of objectivity and truth out the windows, regardless of your claims.

It's sad fact that Dr. walsh has been redueced to this, I once respected the man, but now, he's just a self serving fear monger like the rest. Well, I can't be all hard on him he was at least smart enough to keep JT away.
"My name is Lenerd Church, and you will fear my LASER FACE"

( Had I the knowledge of how to do so, you would see the infamous Admiral Ackbar image with "It's a trap!" in this space. As it is, I'll let you form the image on your own. )

On a more serious note, I do hope this goes well for Ms. Vance and she is allowed to speak and actually be heard. The optimist in me prays FERVENTLY for this outcome. The realist in me sees this being just another ESRB beat-down with Ms. Vance's time wasted.

The entire "summit" is just going to turn the ESRB into a punching bag anyway. Very little worth anyone's time will get done.

If only the ESRB would invite Nintendo's Reggie to assist them.

A wise thing that Ms. Vance could do, is to tape the summit in detail, and then provide that Tape to Blank rome. Any information presented that is false, has been disproven, is an outright lie or fabrication, or in otherwise could be taken as slander, liebel, or defamation, should be cataloged, and then a series of briefs, advising the parties of a potentional lawsuit should be filled. If the parties do no publicly retract said statements, then the ESA and Blank rome should move to have them sued and bankrupted under slander, liebel, and defamation law. Might not be very nice, but it would sure shut them the fuck up and keep them from lying no wouldn't it?

Vance is SOO brave...putting herself in the crossfire like this. i like her...she is serious about mature rated games staying out of kid's hands, but bends backwards to avoid beinjg replaced by a goverment ratings system.

That's the one. Too bad we can't actually post this in the comments themselves. Though I can understand GP's reluctance to allow it (if, indeed, it has been disallowed) due to possible abuse.

I hope she wears some good mail and gets enchants and buffs before heading in there because that thing is going to be an instance to end all instances! I mean, when Clinton did an interview with a faux news correspondent, he's a democrat so of course he'll be attacked, they hate democrats.

But with NIMF it is their mission to destroy the ESRB. It's like Clever Wordplay showing up to a Carrot Top rally.

I agree with admiral ackbar: It's a trap!

/Agree.

will she be the only Pro-game person there?

Hurry,Doug lowestein and Henry jenkins!

Well, as I've said in the past, since Dr. Walsh wrote the "Gamer is not a Dirty Word" column, I can forgive him almost everything. Plus, he only targets "violent videogames", i.e. games whose graphic violence is one of the most aspects. And he's always been respectful of gamers and ready to discuss with them, contrary to many anti-game and anti-violence activists.

About Anderson, OK, he's been spanked by court in the past, but although we can argue about his research on "violent games", and although he doesn't seem to like the game industry a lot, he always made it clear that he wasn't "anti-game". It's important to make the difference between (violent) game critics (such as Walsh) and game haters (such as Jack Thompson).

So, I don't know what will happen for Patricia Vance, but I'm glad she's one of the panelists. Anyway, a videogame summit would make no sense without the presence of someone from the videogame industry.

Dr. Anderson may be hopelessly biased and agenda-driven, but frankly he IS "media effects psychology". Do a review of the literature and you'll find that he's written about 1 out of every 3 or 4 papers ever published on the potential effects of movies, television, and video games on children and young adults. You can't exclude him from a dialogue without accusing that entire branch of psychological research as being suspect. It IS suspect, of course, but no one has the clout and spine to say so.

And anyone who thinks Vance ISN'T walking into a trap or at least a rigged "dialogue" isn't facing reality. These proceedings aren't neutral when organized by congress, let alone by Dr. Anderson's Dept. at Iowa State and by a private, agenda-driven organization like NIMF. You might as well invite a Freeper to a debate at UC-Berkeley entitled "Neo-conservative Elitist Fascist Pigs: Must they all be executed for crimes against the proletariat, or may some be properly imprisoned and re-educated?".

At least Dr Walsh doesn't target video games that CAN be violent but aren't and make up content that isn't even in or never has been in the game.

well at least the ESRB is bieng consulted

What exactly is this summit? I mean, I know the basics, but is it an industry only event or is it open to the public? I am actually interested in attending.
