This whole user-created content thing is so confusing to some folks, apparently.GamePolitics was cc'd on cease-and-desist letter sent by Miami attorney Jack Thompson to Midway, publishers of the recently-released Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. The letter reads, in part:
"It has today come to my attention that the newly recently Mortal Kombat: Armageddon contains an unauthorized commercial exploitation of my name, photograph, image, and likeness within the game."
"You are commanded to cease and desist immediately from the distribution of this game because of this unauthorized, illegal content..."
"It would appear that your company has done this at least in part because I sued you all in the Paducah school massacre case and further because I appeared on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 when your company came out with your profane, violent, and idiotic Blitz: The League."
However, Thompson seemingly fails to take into account that the depiction of him to which he is referring is not part of the published game, but rather user-created content. A utility known as Kreate a Fighter is included with the game and lets players make their own combatants.
The creation of the Thompson character is detailed at Gaming Target, which describes the various settings and rationales behind the design of characters depicting Thompson, Hulk Hogan, Silent Bob and others. Documentation for the Thompson character says:
Jack Thompson is all legs and is a deadly mid-range opponent.
Jack's personality meshes perfectly with many of the Kreate A Fighter options. He fights with the Aggressive Shotokan stance as it gives him that puffed out self-important look... His projectile is a big fireball known as the Chi-Blast because he's always spouting flames on the Internet...

IE:
You are commanded to cease and desist immediately from any and all litigation involving games, movies, television, music, and any other artistic pursuit. Your costant use of the legal system as a bludgeon is both unconscionable and frankly embarrassing. You have damaged the image of the entire legal profession. If you do not refrain from such behavior immediately we will be forced to file a class action lawsuit for damages related to the negative image of attorneys you have fostered in the community..
Sincerely,
Hoo-yah Daddy
I wouldn't put it past him.
Thompson is such a joke. Period.

Ah. It's always fun to come and read the things Jack has done. That man's funnier to me than stand-up Comedy. :-D
Seriously, you foolish moron. Learn the difference between what a player can create on a whim, and what the company put in on it's own accord.
That person will win fifty unclogged intertubes!
@ Howell2751: I'd like to see a SC3 Jack Thompson go against the SC3 Chuck Norris. Yes, I realize it's an old gag, but come on! It's too awesome to pass up!
Seriously though, how could anyone hope to have a case with this? It's just beyond comprehension.
Can someone link me to info over the Marvel/COH thing I heard Marvel foudn out its own artists and such were making characters on it and marvel gave up,also when did marvel pick NC soft for their MMO I thought they were working with someone else 0-o
Imagine, the real fight here is if we will be able to make mods and skins for our favorite games if possible.
Imagine Neverwinter Nights without the dungeon mastering? Half life without counterstrike....
user created content! CEASE and DESIST! Stop making fun of me or i'll sue and yo'll get such a pinch!
Do you have the formula for JT still or able to upload your save file? I was making my own version but I got bored with it and stopped working on it.
