Multi-player Grand Theft Auto Mod Readied for Beta

December 26, 2006
For a few years now, some members of the GTA mod community have been pulling together an online multiplayer version of the controversial Grand Theft Auto series.

According to the Multi Theft Auto site, the ambitious, unofficial PC mod is nearly ready for public beta. From the video included with this story, it appears that the MTA mod will feature deathmatch and capture the flag modes.

Should we expect controversy? Hey, it's GTA and modders. You do the math...

UPDATE: True confession time... GP does not follow the GTA scene closely. So we're grateful to a number of readers who have commented that there is also another PC multiplayer mod, San Andreas Multiplayer.

[...] Game Politics brought to my attention a trailer for a Grand Theft Auto multiplayer game, created by GTA modders. The GTA mod community’s other accomplishments include unlocking a hidden sex simulator in GTA: San Andreas and using the game’s engine to create a parody of anti-game lawyer Jack Thompson. [...]

lol @ the shameless sa-mp advertising

wait until both products release before you say one is even remotely better than the other, thanks

I just imagined a lan party where everyone is running around in the city as a player. You would need one hell of a sever but hey good times.

I predict a Counter Strike esque rise to fame.

@ Foxman

You mean endless commercials, bundleware, rehash releases, combo-packs and GOTY awards? Oh, and the fact that it (like HL1/CS) will run on even the crappiest system of today?

Fact is that NO ONE had ever heard of Darwinia* until it got STEAM'ed, through which 99.9% of CS gamers (and others) get all their news.

It's fairly obvious that all but 3 or so of the replies are from the same person. If not, it may as well be.

BTW, all hail SA-MP! Horrible sync, rich abundance of cheaters, and admins who are egocentric jackasses. The whole of this thread sure knows which mod is the best.

*rolls eyes*

MTA what's that? Only played and always will play SA-MP. OMG SA-MP RULEZ. Do I get a cookie now?

SA-MP pwns MTA double time!

SA-MP rocks the world!

SA-MP is already rocking, and with their 0.2 version coming out soon (which contains way more possibilities then MTA), MTA got no chance at all.

SA-MP (http://www.sa-mp.com/) which is a similar but much more advanced multiplayer mod for gta san andreas has been released for like half a year now, are you guys living in stone age or the uninformed age?

San Andreas Multiplayer has been around since June now, featuring full Deathmatch, a powerfull scripting engine, awesome sync, creating unlimited possibilities for the gamemode designers. With over 350 servers around, and thousands of players online, combined with an active forum, IRC channels and communities around a number of large servers, I'd say SA-MP is worth far more then MTA, especially with the release of SA-MP 0.2 coming up, which features far more possibilities :)

Whooperthepoop! SA-MP rocks way more!

SA-MP is way much better. Its alreay released some months ago.
Check it out www.sa-mp.com!

And they already got a racemod, anyway deathmatch? take a look at www.sa-mp.com!

Yes! finally you're able to get out of your vehicle! but this time not in San Andreas! No no no, we dont like SP (thats why your actually able to change your weapons!) but in your own created world!

Sa-mp 4 LIFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not following the GTA world closely, I'll cop to total ignorance on SA-MP...

But I will add an update to the story about it. Thx for bringing it to my attention...

Cheers for adding a mention for SA:MP, much appreciated.

- Luke, SA:MP Team

Let me beat a dead horse a little bit more:

sa-mp rulez to teh max WFFBBQ MTA is teh sukz. ROFLCOPTER.

no.. really.. I'm certain GP missed it the first 30 times.

I like MTA.

C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!

MTA rly sucks dude
SA-MP is much & much better!

SA-MP PWND!

my god, too many "SA-MP PwNz U nOoBz"

...MTA looks lke the GTA I've been dreaming. I mean, I had a dream about a GTAMMO but thats cause...well I was sick. But damn!

@-Jes-

I've always figured it just started out as a Half Life mod, then spread through word of mouth alone.
Probably should've just said that in the first place, I don't know much about Counter Strike.

SA-MP all the way for me! Way more fun then MTA and way more possibilities. www.sa-mp.com

MTA?

sa-mp rules!

So it's a game that lets you kill other people instead of just AIs? ALERT THE INTERNET! THIS IS THE MOST ORIGINAL THING EVER!

Or, if one doesn't feel like waiting for MTA, SA-MP has had a public beta ready for months now...

I really need to get some sort of gaming machine so I can play this...what the world needs more of...Free on-line explode 'em up.

find nintendo ds at http://the-games-center.info...

Everything you need to know about grand theft auto san andreas...

MTA, lol, what is that? SA:MP is already out and is awesome.

oh yeah, Rockstar should have handled this themselves. These mods don't check cd keys so you can go on with a burned copy.

Can you perhaps tell me step by step how I must go about to play SA-MP online, please, I cant seem to get it right.
Thank you

ZenI felt Brutal Legends was a funny & beautiful look at the world of rock from Double Fines point of view. The only parts I wasn't hot for were the RTS bits as it felt forced. Otherwise fantastic.02/12/2012 - 1:34pm
DorthLousPassed 1.5M$. And I'd also say that Brutal Legend is far from being a bad game. I just think it was a few levels under what people expected from the people working on the project.02/11/2012 - 8:25am
TechnogeekBrutal Legend wasn't bad so much as "marketing had no idea how the game actually played", causing it to suffer accordingly.02/10/2012 - 10:38pm
