Newspaper Report: Mexican State Govt. Will Seize All Copies of GRAW2

March 23, 2007 -
According to Juarez newspaper El Diario (link is to imperfect Google translation), the governor of the Mexican state of Chihuahua has ordered the seizure of all copies of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2.

Gov. Jose Reyes Baeza Terraces apparently took the action following recent criticism of GRAW2 by Juarez Mayor Héctor Murguía Lardizábal, who called the game, which deals with battles between an elite U.S. force an Mexican rebels,  "a crime against the intellectual capacity of Juarez residents." The Juarez mayor offered this blanket condemnation:
Violent video games instill values which are upside down, and these actions are despicable because they attempt to divide the good will of the residents of American and Mexican cities.

Protection of the border between the United States and Mexico is, of course, an extremely hot political topic these days.

UPDATE 3/27/07: More in the El Paso Times, including word that Gov. Terraces reached out to Texas Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D) for help with the GRAW2 issue. No word on how Reyes reacted to the Mexican request for assistance.

Yeah!!!!
And aliens will take away all the copies of Mass Effect when it comes out!!!

Imagine a game made in Iraq, with US soldiers depicted as mindless, murderous terrorist invaders. With AAA graphics and huge production value. On Xbox360.
Would you be happy about such a game? And would the US public/press/political class be happy about it?

@r3d3:
They have every right to disagree with the game's content, but it's hard to deny that outright censorship is a little bit of an overreaction.

@Mexican Hater

I hate all rascists. They are ruining the world. They come here and spout their bullshit and hate.

I hope they all develop some rare disease and die off.

I hate all mexicans. They are ruining California. They come here and expect us to change the way we live to accomodate them.

Fuck mexicans. I hope they all develop some rare disease and die off.

Omg, mexico...let's just annex that place already...

95% of the politicians there are totally curropted, and also very stupid. That's why it's so poor.

Heellloooo MR kingpin, what evils can you do today??eh?

BTW GP if this dose not count for outside of Juarez ,then you need to change the title, its misleading.

I guess we can just add Mexico to the "free nation that is not really free" list along with Austrailia and Germany.

I think this is stupid... but it does raise a question:

Do the French hate mexico? R6, graw 1 and 2. I would not be surprised if the revolutionary new game they are promising is a mix of all their IP, and is entitled "Ubisoft Presents F*** Mexico"

[...] Mexico has banned Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 because of missions that deal with American troops enguaging Mexican rebels and Mercenaries 2: World in Flames has parallels with Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez who certainly doesn’t get christmas cards from Bushs whitehouse. [...]

When a government gets involved, it's always going to be a BAD thing for the industry.

Not allowing people to view and enjoy the media they want because one person thinks that playing the game will start some kind of war between the USA and Mexico, now THAT'S what I would call ”a crime against the intellectual capacity of Juarez residents.”!

"Violent video games instill values which are upside down". None of my values have been instilled by video games. They have been instilled by my parents, my teachers and my peers. Growing up, I've played every violent game that the anti-game brigade describes as being ruinous to young people (Doom, GTA, etc.) yet I have yet to kill/injure/maim anyone.

”a crime against the intellectual capacity of Juarez residents.”

I suppose that the Juarez citizens don't have the intellectual capacity to decide which games they would like to play. This is disgusting, it sounds like one of Mr. Thompsons ideas! He tried to get copies of Grand Theft Auto snatched up, but I never thought it would actually happen. The Mexican govt. is censoring "dangerous" ideas from their people and their only justification is that all videogames are trash anyway!

I just hope this becomes a cautionary tale one day, although they rarely seem to work!

Wow! He really doesn't want those Drug Cartels to be mad it him!

Oh well, I wouldn't want my income harmed either I guess.

Yeah, don't send in federal authorities to seize drugs or guns from cartels, both of witch HAVE caused widespread violent crime in the country. No, ordering them to seize video games is much more important.

Seriously, sometimes I think politicians in Mexico help themselves to the product flowing through their country like water.

So, are the Mexican pols unbelievably stupid, do they have ties to the drug cartels, or both? You decide!

laddy jack had better not cite this in his press releases or in his upcoming hearings.

I would think that they have much worse issues in Juarez than videogames. I believe that town/city is known for its countless murders of women.

Would they be happier if the developers made a game about hunting illegal immigrants in US cities? For the game to be realistic though most of the illegals in south western cities would be Mexican since they are the highest percent of illegals there due to their geographical advantage to illegally enter. The challenge could be locating the illegal immigrants among legal immigrants. I think I'd buy it.

So does that mean the Mexican Gov't promotes rebels? lol
