Second Life Has its First Republican Presidential Candidate

Second Life Has its First Republican Presidential Candidate

May 1, 2007
Okay, so he's not John McCain, Mit Romney or Rudy Giuliani. Still...

Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) is the first Republican presidential candidate to have a Second Life headquarters. And he probably doesn't even know it.  Hell, we're not even sure he knows what Second Life is.

As reported by Second Choices, a blog dedicated to tracking the 2008 election as it unfolds in the popular MMO:
The HQ is unofficial, the Real Life campaign is as yet unaware of its existence, but it’s there, the first Republican footprint in-world... the HQ is still under construction, but open to the public... There aren’t any free [virtual] tee-shirts, yard signs, or other freebies which are available at the Democratic HQs...

So who is Ron Paul? A small government, Libertarian type, his candidacy is, honestly, doomed before it begins. Still, it's great to see the political process in action through the lens of an MMO. Now that we're aware of the Paul campaign, we'll be watching. And we'll be tracking the Second Choices blog, too.

HAHAHAHA small gov't candidate, in the republican party? That's rich.
You seen his Wikipedia article? This guy caters to the American constitution and that alone. He's more south-wing than right.
I must say, after reading his site, I like the guy. Although I know he'll never get the nomination, I would definately vote for him.
He's also way cool because he was a gynaecologist. *thumbs up* :P
Ron Paul just isn't enough of a presidential-sounding name. Too bad.
@ Thefremen
Some of us libertarians tend to agree with Democrats on social issues ("keep the government out of them") and with Republicans on fiscal issues ("keep the government out of them"). I may have misinterpreted your sarcasm, but just in case you are a younger voter, whose only first-hand frame of reference is the W. Bush administration, you should remember that the Republican party has traditionally promoted itself as the party of "smaller government" (at least for the last 40 or 50 years, since the "New Deal") because of its fiscally conservative platforms.
The implication here is that Second Life actually matters. I'm sure that future candidates will need to be well versed in driving out the "Diaper Wearing Furry" vote, or the "Bizarre Harry Potter Themed Sex Club Go-er" vote.

Second Life sucks
Dr. Paul is probably the only honest politician within a 100 mile radius of DC, and the only Congresscritter with a totally Constitutional voting record. As such, he's got my vote for the primary. Even if he loses there, he'll get a write-in during the general election.
Plus, he wants to abolish income tax, so maybe you should give him his chance. :P
Liberal Extremist onslaught in three, two...
I'm definitely voting for him in the primary.

JDKJ: But cheer up, Austin. If the unemployment rate continues to double-digit as predicted for the next few years, your half-dozen stands a better than likely chance of returning to power.

JDKJ: @DS: If he had added the line about "or hiring illegals aliens under the table to work as nannies," it would have been a completely perfect descripition. And, yes, it's about the same difference between a six and a half-dozen.

DarkSaber: My god, that description makes them sound almost Republican. Still what did you expect, Obama is only marginally more left than republicans.

Austin_Lewis: Health insurance, brought to you by the same kind of bureacrats who couldn't, in timely fashion, investigate the comments of any of the men Obama appointed Czars. Or their past. Or their history of not paying taxes.

Austin_Lewis: Yes, and what a piece of crap it was. Arresting and fining people just because they don't make a personal choice to buy healh insurance, creating over a hundred new bureacracies, and worse.

Posted 11/07/09 at 10:58am
JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.
