Fringe Presidential Candidate Mike Gravel Building Second Life Campaign Presence

May 14, 2007
He's the fringiest of fringe candidates, so it probably comes as no surprise that Democrat Mike Gravel has a Second Life campaign site. What's he got to lose?

The Second Choices blog reports that Gravel, the former U.S. Senator from Alaska, will later this week become the first presidential candidate to officially endorse his Second Life presence.

Gravel shook up last month's Democratic debate with unfiltered comments about Iraq, Iran, diplomacy and his fellow Democrats. As Second Choices blogger Laila writes:
Like Ron Paul, Gravel needs grassroots– or in this case, netroots– support in order to raise his profile. By officially endorsing the efforts of his in-world supporters, Gravel’s candidacy will get a much needed boost in visibility.

Gravel's Second Life Group Director Astrophysicist McCallister adds:
I am thrilled to realize that Sen. Gravel is open to exploration of Second Life as a campaign medium, and hope that we’re able to support the candidate while he supports the future of the Political Forum.

While Gravel has not committed to appearing in avatar form, his campaign has secured the use of the name "Mike Gravel" from Linden Lab. Not familiar with Gravel? Check out the debate video:

I would be more impressed if these candidates started a World of Warcraft guild.

No matter what we do the sands of chaos will engulf Iraq its best to leave lick our wounds and air bomb any goverment that regrows there that even thinks about starting sht with us.

Its a shame when things really were better under Husein....now theres no telling what OTT reglious cult will take over once we leave...

Wow, he's very passionate. I'm not so sure I agree that we should just get up and leave Iraq right this very instant, though, but then again we've still got a year or two to think about that.

Agreed. He's got heart and doesn't immediately put me off like most politicians do, so who knows. He seems an honest sort, which definitely works in his favor. The majority of politicians I hear speak can't pull that off, even when they're being honest.

I agree with Vladimir, though, that an abrupt withdrawal from Iraq doesn't seem the best course. Not that I don't want our troops out of that area, mind you...

http://www.gravel2008.us is his website. If you are interested in Mike Gravel it has all his issues right there.

Also Dennis why the use of fringe? While it has many meanings, the way its used here sounds demeaning. I don't think he deserves to have that term. I just hate to see media (yes Game Politics is media) limit the people's choice in elections using terms and words to make people thinking lowly of candidates. It should be the people who make judgments of the candidates without other influencing our judgment.

Yes I'm a supporter of Mike Gravel. (and will probably be the last you will hear from me in this subject)

haha. Yea, that'd be great.

Gravel sees to be a little bit off the chain in the video tho. He thinks we have nothing to worry about, and that is kind of crazy.

That guy kinda scares me, and is it just me or did he try to dodge the energy question? Also anyone know where I can get a unedited video of the debate?

Gamer for President!!!
Sotty. I'm sick and depressed and I need something to cheer me up.

Andrew EisenThat article is over five years old, Uncharted. A fun blast from the past though.02/12/2012 - 10:47pm

ZenI felt Brutal Legends was a funny & beautiful look at the world of rock from Double Fines point of view. The only parts I wasn't hot for were the RTS bits as it felt forced. Otherwise fantastic.02/12/2012 - 1:34pm
DorthLousPassed 1.5M$. And I'd also say that Brutal Legend is far from being a bad game. I just think it was a few levels under what people expected from the people working on the project.02/11/2012 - 8:25am
TechnogeekBrutal Legend wasn't bad so much as "marketing had no idea how the game actually played", causing it to suffer accordingly.02/10/2012 - 10:38pm

GuamishI think it is in good hands. Tim did a game for the GDC award show and that was fun for how short it was.02/10/2012 - 12:22pm
