Florida Attorney General Looking into Wii Version of Manhunt 2

June 6, 2007 -
Is Manhunt 2 worse on the Wii?

GamePolitics has confirmed via multiple sources that Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum (R) has expressed concern over the impending release of Rockstar's controversial game on Nintendo's next-gen console.

For McCollum, the issue seems to be the use of the Wii's motion-sensitive controller. It is widely anticipated that players will be required to simulate slashing, stabbing or clubbing motions in order to play Manhunt 2 on Nintendo's popular system.

McCollum apparently said as much in an on-camera interview Monday with Fox News reporter Orlando Salinas. The interview hasn't aired so far. It was originally slated to run this evening, but late yesterday Salinas told GamePolitics he thought it might run closer to Manhunt 2's July 9th release date.

Among those interviewed by Salinas for the report was anti-game attorney Jack Thompson, who has been beating the drum about Manhunt 2 - and especially the Wii version - for several weeks. A Thompson letter sent to both McCollum and Florida Governor Charlie Crist (R) on May 12th read in part:
Florida retailers are scheduled to sell a very violent video game called Manhunt 2 which will be available, remarkably, for “play” on the kids-friendly Nintendo Wii gaming platform.

The Wii device does not utilize traditional push button game controllers but instead utilizes hand-held motion capture devices... It is a training device.

Despite several calls to his office, it remains unclear whether or not Gov. Crist will take a position on Manhunt 2. However, it would appear that Jack Thompson has gotten the Florida Attorney General's attention.

According to our sources, A.G. McCollum is not focusing at all on the PS2 or PSP versions of the game.  Instead, McCollum is looking into the Wii version due to its motion-controlled simulation of violence. "That's where they're kicking up their heels," one source said.

In February of this year GamePolitics asked Nintendo officials if they were concerned about potential backlash over Manhunt 2's appearance on the Wii. Beth Llewelyn, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications told GP at the time:
Manhunt 2 is not developed or published by Nintendo. It is one of many titles released by third party publishers for our system that appeal to people of all ages and interests. Just as with movies, television, and books, different video games appeal to - and are appropriate for - different audiences.

A knowledgable video game industry source has told GamePolitics that Nintendo actively pursued a Wii version of Manhunt 2.
[Nintendo exec] Reggie [Fils-Aime] spent a fair amount of time soliciting [former Take Two CEO] Paul Eibeler to get the game on the Wii… Reggie did it to introduce more M-rated content, as he was afraid too many people would pigeon-hole [the Wii] as a kid machine.

It is unknown what - if any - official action A.G. McCollum might take. Florida has no video game law on the books and Manhunt 2, violent though it may be, would appear to enjoy the same constitutional protections afforded to other games.

For his part, Thompson has urged Gov. Crist and Attorney General McCollum to have Manhunt 2 declared a public nuisance under Florida law. But the anti-game attorney tried - and failed - with that legal gambit in his 2006 bid to block distribution of another Rockstar game, Bully.

UPDATE: GP has received the following comment from A.G. McCollum's Press Secretary:
Attorney General Bill McCollum is concerned about any games which may instill violence in children, particularly games that encourage children to engage in violent behavior, even in simulation. He believes it is important to help protect children from influences which may introduce violence into their lives and stresses the importance of parental involvement in the efforts to keep these influences out of our homes and away from our families.

I love violent games! I play GTA, Scarface, Silent Hill all sorts of violent games! I even bought Manhunt for the Xbox. But i pretty much had to get rid of it cause it was actually TOO violent for me! You can call me a wimp if you want but that game pretty much crossed the line for me. Now I am not saying that the game should be banned, I am just saying I think they should do everything they can to keep it away from younger gamers. Its a pretty sick game.

[...] Gamers joke wryly about “wii” on the Game Politics blog, “Slashing someone’s neck with a shard of glass? Simply move your Wii-mote right to left in a sweeping motion while pressing the B button…” Game Politics reports on the Florida attorney general’s issues with Manhunt 2’s Nintendo Wii interactive gaming platform where players can “act out” the violence, not just use a joystick. [...]

Ban manhunt on the wii because you hack and slash with a wiimote? Why not ban flashlights because kids like to pretend they're lightsabers? When I was little I didn't need a small white box in my hand to learn how to hit things. I had plastic swords, bows and arrows and so on, kids would learn much better with those than on a wii (if the kids were allowed to even BUY the game).

Those of us who are grown-ups might just want to play the game because it's a game. Here's a little news for "Anti-game lawyers" - I OWN swords and axes. Functional ( metal, sharpened, and yes legal (just not in public)) ones and wooden, training ones. If I feel the need to "Simulate murders" I can take my training weapons out into my back yard and swing my little heart out. If on the other hand I want to play a game... I'll boot up a Games console.

Seriously, these guys should first fight the fact that REAL lethal weapons are publicly, and legally available, before trying to ban games, because they have something that might be a little bit like a real weapon.

first off this I see this as nothing more then jack thompson to keep his fucking name in the news, dosent he have any thing better to do? And as for the game it self i dont think its right to ban this game, ANYWHERE! i truely sincerly believe that the sale of games like manhunt 2 need to be restricted to people over the age of 17, and as for the asshole parents that buy these games for there under age childern(and give thompson something to do ) , do some fucking research before you buy it! read the package, check it out on the net, something, dont blindly buy it. and the bottom line is that if this game and others like it offend you dont buy them and dont allow them to be playd in your house, but please dont make life tough for the rest of us.

oh and by the way jack thompson if you read this it dosent matter if its bannd in florida i can allways buy it off ebay or for that matter drive over the state line into georga and buy a copy, so for all of your hard work you accomplish nothing!

what the hell is this shit that the wiimote promotes violent behavior? i have quit an impressive inventory of real, and legal weapons. just to name a few a 6 foot high carbon steel double edged sword, a 45. cal pistol and a BAR 50 riffle, there all registerd dont ask! so to tell ya the truth i hardly need a game to teach me how to perform violent acts, the wiimote is just another means to satisfy the demand from gamers for a more realistic gaming experience, and yes the wiimote is the product of gamers input not just a marketing ploy by nintendo we demanded a more realistic and in depth gaming experience, and nintendo deliverd!

and just out of curiosity what drives a man to rape a women? (yes i am totaly against it!) id love to see ya try and stick that one on a video game!

MechaTama31I mean, of the groups being bullied here, which of the two would you refer to collectively as "nerds"?10/19/2014 - 11:30pm
MechaTama31But that's the thing, it doesn't sound to me like he is advocating bullying, it sounds like he is accusing the SJWs of bullying the "nerds", who I can only assume refers to the GGers.10/19/2014 - 11:21pm
Andrew EisenInteresting read. Unfortunately, too vague to form an opinion on but at least now I know what faefrost was talking about in James' editorial.10/19/2014 - 10:39pm

Neo_DrKefkaOnly good thing I seen come out of the Biddle incident was the fact a professional fighter offered to give 10k to an anti bullying charity for a round in the ring with Biddle.10/19/2014 - 7:49pm

Neo_DrKefkaI believe the problem #GamerGate has with Sam Biddle is he is apart of this blogging group that in a way hates or detests its readers. Also being apart of the crowd that claims its on the right side of history isn't helping when he is advocating bullying10/19/2014 - 7:45pm
MechaTama31Of course, I'm looking at these tweets in isolation, I don't know a thing about the guy.10/19/2014 - 7:06pm
MechaTama31If anything, the sarcastic implication seems to be that the SJW crowd is bringing back the bullying of nerds. But it's the GGers who are out for his blood? I'm lost...10/19/2014 - 7:01pm
MechaTama31I don't really get this Sam Biddle thing. The reaction to his tweets seems to be taking them at face value, but... they're tongue in cheek. Right?10/19/2014 - 7:00pm
