Alabama Senator Slugs Colleague on Senate Floor

Alabama Senator Slugs Colleague on Senate Floor

June 10, 2007
Last week GamePolitics picked up on a news outlet's report that two New York state senators nearly came two blows over a violent video game bill. The story turned out to be overstated by the original source, and we were quick to clarify.

On Thursday, however, a heated discussion between two Alabama state senators led to an actual punch being thrown on the Senate floor. Fortunately, the local PBS station was there to capture the action.

The involved parties, Sen. Charles Bishop (R, puncher) and Sen. Lowell Barron (D, punchee) weren't arguing over video game legislation - oh, how juicy a story that would have been! But the senatorial punchout reminds us yet again that violence is as old as time and doesn't need a video game for inspiration.

The Decatur Daily News has the backstory. Here's a heavy metal version of the video.

I'm guessing that Bishop threw the punch because he'd played video games at some previous point.
Um.... How many blows?
Yeah, I agree. It must be one of those "murder simulators" that made him do it.

Where's Jack Thompson when you need him?
I think he trained on Dead or Alive 4. Thats the only way you can learn to hit somebody with that kind of finesse.
Thats right someone calls your mother a bitch you beat the crap out of them for disrespecting her. Doesn't matter who or where it is, you give them a well deserved beat down.
He trained on Presidential Pong!
I love the one black guy is grinning the whole time
Those politicians need MRIs!

If political debates are causing aggression that leads to violence, then politicians need to be banned to keep our children safe!

Protect the children from violent politicians!

This isn't so bad, political debates in other countries commonly get violent. I'm glad to see these people receive bad press and what not.

I think he was training on Fight Night. He needs to do some strength training though that shot wasn't as clean and powerful as it should have been. I think that old man should start some serious training for a rematch. At the very least it would keep their mind off whatever crazy ass new law they want to support.
Incontrovertible proof that politics lead to violence. We'll have to get some studies done and take it to the courts to ban the republicans and democrats, both were involved in this! Imagine letting your kid near one of these people after a frustrating debate! Ban them, for the children!

But really, I can sympathise with the guy, don't we all want to punch a politican or 2 now and again? I can imagine the urge is far greater for someone who's actually involved with them on a daily basis.
tsk tsk tsk... how many Wii Boxing related attempted murders must come to pass before Nintendo is held accountable...

I've got nothing.
"Protect the children from violent politicians!"

Damn straight! Kids are much more likely to emulate their leaders and those in power then some fake violent video game that they know is fake. I say we pass legislation barring politicans from going any where within 100 yards of a minor. Politicans who break this rule will receive a felony offense and get 4 years in prison. Also i think politicans who pass unconstitutional legislation should receive the same felony offense and punishment.
Agreed BmK, I believe we should pass a law banning the election of politicians to office. They're just too violent. Think of the children!
if he trained on Punch Out! be careful! he could be a sex offender, just like Mike Tyson!
[...] Game Politics reports on Sen. Charles Bishop (R) slugging Sen. Lowell Baron (D) on the floor of the Alabama state senate. This comes as a follow-up to an earlier report, since clarified that U.S. senators nearly came to blows over video game legislation. [...]
Yes, the intelligence of the people running this country is indeed staggering.
I agree, this is clearly a case of real-world violence wiht a real-world cause: Being a senator. We should ban all lawmakers, just to be safe.

On a completely non-sarcastic note, it would be extremely difficult at best to pass the video game violence legislation now, seeing as they apparently have violence issues of their own.
Ah, nothing like watching a bunch of grey haired suit jockeys beating the shit out of eachother.
Recent tests concluded that after being exposed to politics in a controlled condition, that the subjects were far more likely to engage in fisticuffs or other violent or aggressive acts. Using the Jack Thompson school of thinking, this means there is a causal link between Politics and Violence and that moves should be made to limit the Free Expression and Rights of these individuals who tako Politics like Crack Cocaine, with much the same effect.

;)
well as most southern states go we have a bunch of rednecks and the politicians are not excused from being rednecks and sometimes rednecks hit each other.
Prior to the American Civil War there was an incident where a southern congressman beat up an abolitionist congressman with his cane for rude remarks made during an anti-slavery speech.
Fiction writers couldn't have come up with that irony. That video is going to be my rebuttal to every singly "videogames cause violence" argument I hear from here on out.
@wookie
I remember that in history although I think it was the senator's relative who beat him up not the senator himself.
Thompson: But the fact is—and here‘s is what significant. Sen. Charles Bishop was able to go to Sen. Lowell Barron very calmly, efficiently, coolly and punch him. Anon, you can‘t do something this well the first time you do it. And the fact is, it wasn‘t the first time. Sen. Charles Bishop was in a hyper-reality situation, in virtual reality. Almost every fist fight the FBI and Secret Service has found is immersed in violent entertainment.

Me: Ok. Explain to the civilians out there, the person who doesnt know about "Teken 4". How does the game prepare or drill him in the execution of fist fights?

Thompson: It drills you and gives you scenarios on how to fight.
It gets you to punch with your heart rate lower. In fact, the FBI agent in Alabama said that we could tell by the surveillance videos that Sen. Charles Bishop's heart rate was not above 60. That‘s impossible to do unless you have done it before.

Sounds familiar to me!! :D

(Btw, i obviously changed out names and places from the Hardball session Thompson did awhile back.)

Meh....

I'm still waiting to see Jack Thompson punch someone out....

Followed by a claim that 'Bully' trained him to do it. :)
Notice the R was the puncher? "Boo-Hoo, our party is going down in flames and our best idea to fix it is get another actor in charge..."
Speaking as someone who's IN Alabama, I can tell you that while Bishop probably shouldn't have punched Barron... I wouldn't buy a used car from Barron either. The guy is slime.

If this was in a video game it would be Teen rated, even though a game is fictional. As these are real life people involved in a real fight, there is no rating system. Once again the reality of a situation is totally at odds with a rational version.
Hrm, my attempt at quotage seems to have exploded messily.

@Michael Brooks

I like how even Barron is laughing. (at least it seemed like it to me)

Listen to the cameraman's comment, "yea I got it!" Pure gold.
I'm surprised no one's linked this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=oMdtICZ12RY

Maybe he trained on that?
Politics are so much more fun when people get violent. How soon until the fighting spills into Capitol Hill, I wonder?
Heh, speaking as a UK political activist I know of loads of occasions locally when politics have got violent. One elected official even threw a chair at another before asking him outside but then he is a bit of a ****. :)
[...] Fighting on the Senate Floor [...]
I'm still waiting for someone on youtube to add sounds from Streetfighter 2 onto that clip.

JDKJ: Of 437 koala bears surveyed, 420 preferred women with big tits.

Aliasalpha: Ding dong the witch is dead eh? Maybe we'll finally be treated as adults here and women can have small tits again!

JDKJ: Survey says no opinion either way. But approval is high among wombats.

BearDogg-X: JDKJ: What does the wallabies and crocodiles think of Skippy?
Posted 03/20/10 at 10:24pm
Andrew Eisen: Beardogg-X - Not staunchly, no. However, only one AG has gone on record as supporting an R18+ rating. The rest either stated no position or declined to comment.
Posted 03/20/10 at 10:23pm
JDKJ: Of 437 koala bears surveyed, 420 disagree with choice of Skippy for interim AG.
Posted 03/20/10 at 10:21pm
BearDogg-X: With Atkinson stepping down, the question now becomes was there any other AG besides him that was against R18+? His stepping down does make R18+ more likely to be approved.
Posted 03/20/10 at 10:18pm
Andrew Eisen: Well, Adelaide readers seem pleased with Atkinson's decision. 420 out of 437.

JDKJ: BREAKING: Vacant Aussie AG post to be filled by Skippy, the Bush Kangaroo.

Andrew Eisen: Flamespeak - Gamecube and Xbox came out in late 2001 with contollers pretty similar to the Dual Shock. You never know thoug. This Fall may be when the standard controller changes from the Dual Shock to a motion wand. *shudder*

Flamespeak: at a quicker rate these days.

Flamespeak: I believe that was launched in the first part of 1998. 2 years seems kind of fast too, but then again the world seems to move

Andrew Eisen: Flamespeak - Not when you consider Sony's been using the same controller since the PS1.
Posted 03/20/10 at 10:03pm
BearDogg-X: Andrew Eisen: I meant that it won't take as many people to change their votes next election. Besides that, it's become a moot point now that he's stepping down as AG as soon as the election's over.
Posted 03/20/10 at 10:02pm
Flamespeak: Seems kind of early considering the PS2 didn't launch until well into 2000.

Andrew Eisen: Fleamespeak - I'd say since around the turn of the century.

BearDogg-X: BREAKING NEWS: Atkinson will step down as South Australia Attorney-General; will remain in Parliament
Posted 03/20/10 at 09:59pm
Andrew Eisen: BearDogg-X - Not sure what your point about Atkinson having only 8500 votes is, seeing as that's around 65% (of the total votes counted at the time).
Posted 03/20/10 at 09:57pm
Flamespeak: I remember when the NES controller held that honor and the stand alone one button joystick before that.
