Take Two's Zelnick Stands Behind Manhunt 2

Take Two's Zelnick Stands Behind Manhunt 2

June 21, 2007
Take Two Interactive Chairman Strauss Zelnick is standing behind Manhunt 2.

What else can he say, really?

According to a Reuters report, Zelnick's comments included:
The Rockstar team has come up with a game that fits squarely within the horror genre and was intended to do so.

It brings a unique, formerly unheard of cinematic quality to interactive entertainment, and is also a fine piece of art.

GP: Despite Zelnick's brave comments, there's really only one option here: a postponed release while the game is re-cut enough to gain an M rating from the ESRB.

Comments

It's funny really, in attempting to stop Manhunt in 'being marketted to children' they've put Rockstar in a position where they have no choice but to alter the game until it is available to a younger audience.

There's a strange kind of Irony in there somewhere....
Lol... yea it is kind of strange the way it works out I havn't looked at it from that angle.

I'm glad he used the term 'Horror Genre' and 'art'. Games most definately art.
I think this whole thing has shown is that there should be a rating between M and AO.
I just want to add that I would love to kill the person who runs this website in a way that is bloody and violent.
Seems to me like they could cut it down to get an M rating, and then after that one starts selling in retail they could release the AO version for sale online. People could order it directly from Rockstar, which would ultimately equal more money for them. I know I'd be willing to hold out an extra couple months to get a "Director's Cut" version online.
Wow, a troll that isn't even original enough to think up a new line.
And for those who are Wondering, the inimitable Dr Alexander Thomas has been popping up with this little nugget in various threads, he didn't get a bite the first time, but the poor fool keeps trying.
Even worse, one who can't come up with a rationalization.
Yea I like going onto websites I hate just to try to get under the skin of those who enjoy it...
@ GoodRobotUs

And the best part is that when they realese the cut-down game, some group is gonna stand up and complain about how this game is markedet to children. Then our favorite lawyer is gonna try to ban the game.
Just wanted to let everyone know my comment above was sarcastic.

I really hope someone else steps up to defend Rockstar, I think they need some assistance on this issue.
@Terrible Tom

Actually considering how much Rockstar has hung the rest of the Electronic Entertainment Industry out to dry in the past and caused the ESRB and ESA to cover their ass over Hot Coffee, I doubt anyone is willing to step up to the plate any more. They made an ultra-violent game which makes the GTA series look like a child's playground. This got them an Adults Only rating from the ESRB. They should have figured.

What sucks is that the console manufacturers are too scared of the AO rating to allow them a license. Really the game more than likely deserves the rating it got. The problem lies in that AO has gotten a stigma which it doesn't deserve making it a porn rating instead of an Adult rating it should be.
No game, porn or not, deserves an AO rating on consoles. I don't care if the game offends 99.9999% of the population I don't think the AO rating should be used unless consoles are willing to accept them and allow the gamers to decide what they want to play.
Dr. Alexander Thomas seems to be the kind of mentally unstable (or underage and immature) person whom the ratings systems are there to protect.

Regarding Mr. Zelnick's statement, he is perfectly right. Manhunt 2 was never purported to be anything other than a game set in the horror genre. They have never tried to hide the fact that it contains strong violence and settings that are only for an adult audience. I realise the Hot Coffee incident may have undermined some companies trust in Rockstar and Take Two, but they have been open and honest with this title as regards it's content. What I can't understand then is why it is being demonised. If Stephen King were to announce his next horror novel, would people complain that it contained violence? Hostel 2 is out soon, the makers have been honest about the fact it contains ciolence, and no-one gives a damn.

I believe that much of the banning is due to misguided belief that video games = childrens toy, or a lack of faith in retailers.

Either way, I still cannot fathom why the console manufacturers will not allow AO content on their machines.
@ Dr. Alexander Thomas...

How's the weather in Australia today?

And... thx for reading GP
Could be a proxy, but I'm pretty sure that it's NOT the Surgeon General of Louiseville KY ;)
It seems to me Take 2 was asking for this. The game basically aimed at teh AO rating despite the claims and it said right in their contracts they couldn't make an AO game.
I've also found myself wondering whether, at the very least, Rockstar prepared for this eventuality, I suppose we'll find out one way or another in the coming days.
@ Shoehorn O'Plenty,
don't be so hasty in saying the company is honest in what Manhunt 2 is and contains : We don't know yet, nobody as played it. Granted, it would be quite stupid to put yet again hidden content they surely won't do that but really, who knows? I won't pretend anything such.
And for the comparission between a Stephen King or Hostel and this game it's really that : Instead of watching passively someone torture someone else, you are doing it. It's not real, fair enough but then, might as well make all the fake pedophilia ok again. Hey, it's a 3D kid, it's not real so it's ok as much as cutting a 3D someone's genitalia off with pliers! And don't get me started with "This is art" crap.

My question is, where does it stop? Where is there a line that says "This should be rated AO because it is AO?"

I agree in part that every game deserves a chance to be available to people that are in compliance with the rating, and I do find it unfortunate like Tollwutig points out that AO carries a sort of stigma. Hopefully soon, it will become a rating just like the others and not carry that "Kiss Of Death" feel.

It's also very interesting the perspective of GoodRobotUs in his/her first post, I hadn't thought of it that way. :)

I hope I didn't sound angry? T'was just my 2 cents...
Answer me this: is there really any significant maturity difference between a 17-year-old (which is the legal age to buy M-rated games) and an 18-year-old (the legal age to buy AO-rated games)?
@ MacBoy

Indeed, there isn't much difference, that puts into light all the Irony of the first comment of GoodRobotUs :).

But you know it's not just the videogame industry that have this problem with the 18 year-old limit. But what an pain it would be to not have these margins, it would have no end to determine who's mature enough for this and that and who's not. As always, generalizing is unfair, but it is needed.
Umm... Gamepolitics. I assume they could still appeal the AO. Unless they did that and I'm behind on the news
@ MacBoy

There is NO legal age for any of the ratings below AO. Period. The reason for the 18 year cut-off on the AO, is because in practice an AO rating was used for porn games, and you have to be an adult to purchase porn (legally). Now, AO isn't porn from a rating perspective - but it HAS been historically treated that way.

Please people, enough with the, "What's the 1-year difference all about?" questions. ESRB ratings are NOT (NOT, NOT, NOT) legal, and the ages are recommendations ONLY. They exist to help people decide what's best for their kids, but the ages are not set in stone. Let's not get caught up with the numbers, becuase they really are secondary to an informed buying decision.
Yes, I really dont disagree with the AO rating, but I do wish that AO games would not be treated like the devils disks in this country.

With japan, there is a whole cottage industry devoted to "Dating Sims" although granted, some of them arent really sexual, most of them are. And you can usually waltz right into any old store, and pick up a hentai game without getting trouble. (you might not want to broadcast what you are doing to the public though) In this country, even mention porn, and everyone within a five mile radius will point their fingers at you and call you a menace to society.

I think all this is because the U.S was started by puritans. Damn pious people!
I would like to say to those who don't see the difference in the M and AO age ranks. The M rating says !7 and older as the suggested age of play. If a parent thinks it is okay for their kid who is under 17 to play it, that is their choice. If a game is rated AO, the ESRB is stating that no child should play this game. Meaning that it is too intense in one aspect or another for any child.

The same is with movies. R rating says 17 and older, but if a parent thinks it is okay for their under 17 year old child then fine, but NC-17 means that the movie should not be viewed by any child 17 and under (or under 17 it is not exactly clear)
Stand tall and strong, friends! We must fight back this backwards form of censorship and armchair morality. To hell with these morons who seek to keep gaming the sole product of children and tasteless consumers. Video games should be judged by the same standards that reign over film, literature, and music.

Don't like a game? DON'T PLAY IT. Keep your garbage morality, backwards values, and bronze age genocidal war god to yourself.
I wonder if they'll re-release the original content later in some Director's Cut package or something.
the difference tends to be where the law defines what is and is not a minor. they more then likely looked and decided since the agreed upon legal status change from minor to adult is 18 (i understand that there are things out there that can undercut this, but for the most part 18 seems to be the magic cut off after) that they would use that as the point where they feel a person should be able to make their own decisions. i may not agree with that mentality, but it seems to me that is the way they went. rock star did shoot themselves in the foot with the way they handled hot coffee, and i wonder if the esrb went with an AO just to be safe. the real killer here is nintendo and sony refuse to allow it to be published. i still disagree with separating game violence and movie/book violence (even if i enter in the button, i know its a game, i know its digital. the same ppl affected by the digital act would gain the same effect from all other media regardless. we need to realize that there are crazy people out there). if they would go ahead and publish it, either as an AO or unrated, it underlines the message that games are also made for adults. to shy away from something that clearly defends your argument and should really be up to the consumer on if it is right for them is admitting to your detractors that it mostly kids play and a disservice to a large amount of the audience.
i you tubed the first manhunt kills and thought to myself, "this is like a horror movie." and it turns out i got it. i guess not too many people get that.
@upgray3dd - yeah, they could appeal. But that's a non-starter. As I say in the article, there's really only one option.
GamePolitics
I think the best way to ride this is to release it on PC first as a AO title then re tweak the game for the consoles, that would bring in more money and ride out the "free advertising" as well.

[...] Rockstar, in the face of all the bad news, stand behind the product. I applaud them for it. “The Rockstar team has come up with a game that fits squarely within the horror genre and was intended to do so. Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.

JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.
