Tivo Alert: IGDA's Jason Della Rocca on MSNBC Today

June 22, 2007
Jason Della Rocca, executive director of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), dropped GamePolitics an e-mail to say that he will be interviewed by reporter Chris Jansing on MSNBC's Dayside program at noon (Eastern) today.

The likely topic for Della Rocca's interview will be the AMA's move to classify video game addiction as a diagnostic disorder. But, as Jason pointed out in an e-mail:
Who knows if they touch on all the other fun topics [i.e., Manhunt 2] as well...

Full Disclosure Dept: Dennis McCauley, GamePolitics editor, is an IGDA member.

This picture of him makes him seem like a godly/holy figure. Almost as if he has a halo around his head. I'm looking forward to hearing the interveiw. Only 5 hours to go.
Its cool that your an IGDA member, and that you have a >>tiny little link to the IGDA in the large list of other links
I dunno why it cuts off my messages.... anyway I went on to say that the IGDA is very important to the game industry.
I look forward to the reading/watching the interview. I like this guy and the IGDA.
If uploaded or streaming could someone post a link for people not living in the US?.

Thank you :)
Have you all seen the article published on MSNBC.com? It's so incredibly biased that it's sickening. Makes ALL gamers sound like anti-social misfits in desperate need for a shower. There's a story about a "straight-A student" whose grades plummeted due to World of Warcraft, suggesting that video games alone were responsible. There's comparisons that video games are like Jack Daniels, and an audience poll asks the question if video games are just as addictive as drugs and liquor. I don't know if I should be happy or sad that 33% of people said yes - they're the minority, but that's a BIG minority.
Omfg, their letting us have a voice...
@Grahamr
Dont worry, they will proceed to take whatever he says and turn it against us, guaranteed.
@king James
Could you please provide a link?
Thank you
He may be refering to this article about the AMA report:

Thanks for providing the link, Knight. Sorry that I didn't check back soon enough to provide it myself. That's the one. Looking at it cooled down, there are a few pieces of reason, but the story lead is as biased as it gets.

"CHICAGO - The telltale signs are ominous: teens holing up in their rooms, ignoring friends, family, even food and a shower, while grades plummet and belligerence soars.

The culprit isn’t alcohol or drugs. It’s video games, which for certain kids can be as powerfully addictive as heroin, some doctors contend."

In two quick paragraphs, our favorite hobby is consigned to the same realm as alcohol and heroin. There's been a few fatalies from video games (oh, Korea...) but to compare it to heroin, a drug that can kill a person who stops taking it? Ridiculous, fear-mongering rhetoric. At least the doctor at the very end of the story notes that too much game playing is usually a symptom of another mental disorder. Of course, that's buried at the end of the article.
Do we have a feed or transcript on this one? I would very much like to find out how this went.
I have a lot of respect for Della Rocca, if for nothing else than the fact that he coined the term, "massacre chaser".

@E. Zachary Knight:

Thanks for the link, it led to another link featuring an interview with Morgan Webb, my future wife! (She just doesn't know it yet)
Yea the Morgan Webb thing really upset me. I'm sure they could have talked to someone else about it besides her.... oh well I guess they just wanted a pretty face on the news.
[...] I was called in to do an interview for MSNBC. I was a bit concerned given the overly negative piece that ran as their cover story on the web site. Sadly, I can’t yet find a online version of the video or transcript. Overall the interview went well, though I was anxious/nervous at the start and kinda fumbled on my words a bit (having sat in the video booth for 40 minutes during technical difficulties didn’t help ease my nerves any). JDKJ: But cheer up, Austin. If the unemployment rate continues to double-digit as predicted for the next few years, your half-dozen stands a better than likely chance of returning to power.

JDKJ: @DS: If he had added the line about "or hiring illegals aliens under the table to work as nannies," it would have been a completely perfect descripition. And, yes, it's about the same difference between a six and a half-dozen.

DarkSaber: My god, that description makes them sound almost Republican. Still what did you expect, Obama is only marginally more left than republicans.

Austin_Lewis: Health insurance, brought to you by the same kind of bureacrats who couldn't, in timely fashion, investigate the comments of any of the men Obama appointed Czars. Or their past. Or their history of not paying taxes.
Posted 11/08/09 at 01:06am
Austin_Lewis: Yes, and what a piece of crap it was. Arresting and fining people just because they don't make a personal choice to buy healh insurance, creating over a hundred new bureacracies, and worse.

Posted 11/07/09 at 10:58am
JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.
