Live Blogging Take Two

July 12, 2007
Waiting for T2 press event to start. I had heard he wouldn't be here, but new boss Strauss Zelnick is on hand...

Wondering who T2 pissed off to get such an ungodly (8AM) start time. Here we go. Zelnick onstage, says his remarks will be brief. Reminds us once again that no recording devices are permitted. "I will hunt you down," he jokes.

Introducing Sid Meier to talk about new Civilization Revolutions franchise for consoles/handhelds. Running trailer for Civ: R... Sid is onstage, gotta love the guy. Showing some game play. Says the "revolution" in the title refers to bringing Civ to next-gen consoles. Says console players don't want to read manuals, just want to get into the game. Not sure if that's a backhand compliment or not. Game looks great, not sure what system they're showing it on. Sid says release next Spring.

Zelnick now introducing 2K Sports crew with All-Pro Football 2K8. Showing trailer... looks a little arcadish, talking late hits, etc. Visual Concepts onstage. Game looks great. First 2K football game since 2006, took a shot at Madden:
This is not watered-down, league-approved football...

Said that players can speak, something NFL would not permit, so look for trash talking, QB's calling plays, etc. 240 former players such as Staubach, Payton, Butkus, Marino, etc. Online games will feature a real sports ticker from Stats, Inc.

Yipes! My Joystiq buds had trouble getting admitted. It is crowded in here.

Zelnick back onstage introducing BioShock. "I hope you've digested your breakfast," he quipped. Game designer says, in French accent:
Pardon my French, but we call BioShock the shooter with lots of cool shit...

Zelnick back on to intro what everyone came to see: GTA4.
This is the first public live demo... Rockstar has raised the bar with every edition of the game...

Showing the two already-released trailers, now here comes the live play... unfinished code, placeholder music. A purposely short look... Nico in Times Square... a T2 employee is prowling for the room for cameras now that GTA4 is running...  Nico driving around Liberty City in a black 4-door sedan... drives to the waterfront, water, shading looks amazing... calls a friend for weapon, no voice-over yet.... And that's it!

Zelnick back on for wrap-up, no mention of Manhunt 2, but we didn't really expect one.
We're at this incredible inflection point for the industry...

I wait around, congratulate Sid Meier, who is just a total gaming icon and a helluva nice guy. He says the demo was running on Xbox 360.

Introduce myself to Zelnick, who is cordial but not chatty. Same with Ben Feder, Zelnick's CEO.

We're getting kicked out of the room because THQ has a presser right after T2's in the same spot. As I file out the staff is handing out Rockstar-shirts. People are scarfing them up. Look for these on Ebay within the hour, I'm guessing.

On my way out (I'm blowing off THQ because I have some GP stuff to do) I run into Chris Grant, Kyle Orland, and four other guys from Joystiq.  My pal Dean Takahashi from the San Jose Mercury-News was there and has posted his impressions.

Finishing this up over toast and coffee in the restaurant in the Fairmont's lobby. Trying extra-hard not to get marmalade on the keyboard.

@all replying to the fake Jack Thompson: Do not feed the trolls

If that's Jack, or even somebody posing as him... for crying out loud, stop. You're putting way too much effort into posting on this site. How many banned IP addresses is that for you now?

sounds like Jack plans on going on a shooting spree

@Jack Thompson, Attorney

SO you're planning a repeat of the bully fiasco? That went REAL well didn't it?

@Jack Thompson, Attorney

Oh, and by the way Jack, won't that be breaking your settlement with Take Two?

You can get some tablets for that.

Boy, do I have some disruption planned for GTA IV. Can't wait.

Jack Thompson

Excellent, love the reporting style! Kinda gives you the 'seeing it live' feeling when you're describing what's going on.

Oh, Sid, Sid, Sid.

One of the reasons you're a hero of mine is that for a decade or two you made a fantastic portfolio of great AND original games. Gunship, Pirates, Railroad Tycoon, Civilization, Gettysburg!, and a horde of others.

The last 5 years or so has just seen you milking all your old franchises for cash. Civ 3, then another Railroad Tycoon Remake then a Pirates remake then Civ 4 and now Civ for Dummies.

Have you finally run out of ideas?

I need to see about getting bioshock preorder next month,I don't think I will be getting it from EB/GS.

BioShock FTW!

So they're dumbing down the Civ series more? Lame.

sounds like a good meeting- i like this new ceo guy more and more.

and good reporting there- you and joystiq really have the coverage down.

"Reminds us once again that no recording devices are permitted. “I will hunt you down,” he jokes."
"a guy is prowling for cameras now that GTA4 is running… "

Doesnt matter, really. It'll still be on YouTube by the end of the day.

PA,
I think the enthusiastic sounding comments made about Bioshock and GTA4 is pretty much the attitude we can expect from T2's new CEO. If there was any question whether the new T2's new CEO was going to knuckle-under to the likes of John Bruce or legislators, know now, that has bee publically laid to rest. :)

He does talk about how Rockstar has raised the bar every time when a new GTA has come out. But, as always, I wonder if that bar is limited to audio/visual bars or if they have advanced storytelling any further yet.

"And now, a special guest...JAAAAAAAACK THOMPSOOOOOOOON!"

Wouldn't that just blow your socks away! :)

I wonder if any GTA4 information will appear. I really hope so, everything I've been reading and the trailers for that game make look like it will be one bass-ass game. AND corrupt our youths at the same time! double whammy!

spoke too soon.....

I wonder if they'll be as brief as Konami's remarks were yesterday.

ZenI felt Brutal Legends was a funny & beautiful look at the world of rock from Double Fines point of view. The only parts I wasn't hot for were the RTS bits as it felt forced. Otherwise fantastic.02/12/2012 - 1:34pm
DorthLousPassed 1.5M$. And I'd also say that Brutal Legend is far from being a bad game. I just think it was a few levels under what people expected from the people working on the project.02/11/2012 - 8:25am
TechnogeekBrutal Legend wasn't bad so much as "marketing had no idea how the game actually played", causing it to suffer accordingly.02/10/2012 - 10:38pm

GuamishI think it is in good hands. Tim did a game for the GDC award show and that was fun for how short it was.02/10/2012 - 12:22pm
