Xbox Exec Peter Moore Leaving Microsoft For EA Sports

Xbox Exec Peter Moore Leaving Microsoft For EA Sports

In a surprise move, Microsoft has announced that VP of Interactive Entertainment Peter Moore (left) will be leaving the firm. Robbie Bach, president of Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft (and Moore's boss), lauded Moore's tenure at MS:
Peter has contributed enormously to the games business since joining Microsoft in 2003 and we are sad to see him go. Since that time, he presided over the global launch of the Xbox 360™, spearheaded a revitalized and rebranded Games for Windows business, and helped steer the console's ascent.

Meanwhile, Kotaku, which managed to scoop the MS press release by a few hours, has Moore landing in the top spot at EA Sports. Former EA exec Don Mattrick wil take Moore's spot.

GP: Perhaps the knowledge of his impending departure contributed to Moore's rather subdued performance at last week's E3 media briefing. Then again, GP's evil twin wonders whether Moore is walking the plank for the notorious red rings of death fiasco.

UPDATE: An EA press release now circulating says:
Peter Moore has joined EA as President of the EA SPORTS Label. Moore joins EA from Microsoft.. where he served as corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division, leading both the Xbox and Games for Windows businesses. Moore begins at EA in September and will report to EA CEO John Riccitiello.

GP notes that Riccitiello was spotted at the MS E3 media briefing last Tuesday evening.

I think this is a ploy between MS and Moore to gain exclusivity for EA titles on the 360
i pray he doesn't bring the microsoft game studios way of work with him. you know, drop original titles and provide little to no push for the ones you do release.

at least he knows if he gets madden tattooed on his arm there will never be any worry about that series going away
But Microsoft needs his biceps for advertising space!
Maybe he'll make EA Sports better. Then again, he's coming from microsofts gaming department...and what good game did they make on their own?
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo?
Welcome to modern times-you have no job security, but that doesn't mean you have to stick around at a company until the end of time, either.
its probably a combination of the red ring and his unchecked love for nintendo. i wouldn't doubt that it was more of a mutual decision then peter wanting to leave all on his own. i'd think i'd be more worried about him allocating more resources for the wii then the 360.
[...] So, they’re both failing, but Sony’s a bigger looser… in their own country. So I’m guessing Nintendo is the winner there? I guess so. I mean, its low price-point, hours of enjoyment, and small-ness (Japanese apartments are tiny, remember?) makes it a perfect console for most people in Japan. Peter Moore is leaving Microsoft, by-the-way. He’s leaving the evil that’s Microsoft and joining a bigger evil that’s EA. Specifically, EA Sports. [...]
@E. Zachary

ah, my mistake
I'm not sure if i should be happy or sad.
Trying to cover that red ring stuff up was definitely not a choice decision.
well i guess the redlight problem isn't his problem anymore... not to mention the MS stock he sold before the company came clean... moore sells stock, confesses to major problem with 360 and then leaves... coincidence?
Did Steve Ballmer chuck a chair across the room and tell him that he's going to f***ing kill EA?
I would love to know if the Red Ring scandal had any part in this. Sony screwed up and Kutagari took the fall...whither Peter Moore?
Is Sony worried about Moore heading a force as influential as EA Sports?
Jack Tretton has a statement:

@Monte'

Peter did not sell stock just before the announcement. That was Robbie Bach.

According to the next-gen article he left to be closer to his family home of San Fransisco.

I also think that the Red Ring controversy may have helped his decision.
Well let's see... MS just announces a huge expansion of their warranty coverage and sets aside a BILLION dollars to deal with it...

...and Moore is leaving the company.

Coincidence? Highly improbable.

Fired? Extremely likely.
So MS and EA Sports traded? I guess neither job is really a step up from the other.
My theory: they ran out of tattoo room and had to get a fresh set of arms.
My question: Considering Moore had some pretty harsh words about Sony and the PS3, could this have a negative effect on EA Sports WRT publishing on Sony's platform? I wouldn't think so, but Moore may have to eat some of his words.

He added that ambitious plans were now being put in place to buy the adjacent land with the aim of creating a community women's centre, enhanced youth facilities, an elderly day-care centre and an Imam House for resident scholars.

JDKJ: But cheer up, Austin. If the unemployment rate continues to double-digit as predicted for the next few years, your half-dozen stands a better than likely chance of returning to power.

JDKJ: @DS: If he had added the line about "or hiring illegals aliens under the table to work as nannies," it would have been a completely perfect descripition. And, yes, it's about the same difference between a six and a half-dozen.

DarkSaber: My god, that description makes them sound almost Republican. Still what did you expect, Obama is only marginally more left than republicans.

Austin_Lewis: Health insurance, brought to you by the same kind of bureacrats who couldn't, in timely fashion, investigate the comments of any of the men Obama appointed Czars. Or their past. Or their history of not paying taxes.

Austin_Lewis: Yes, and what a piece of crap it was. Arresting and fining people just because they don't make a personal choice to buy healh insurance, creating over a hundred new bureacracies, and worse.

JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.
