Gamer Questions Federal Mod Chip Raids in YouTube Debate Video

August 8, 2007 -

Okay, the sound quality could be better, but Eli here is making his voice heard nonetheless!

And he's right. There is plenty of room to question the use of Homeland Security personnel to raid mod chippers.

@Eli Gundry:

Yes, perhaps they deserve to be paid more for the work they do, but as Clint Eastwood said in "Unforgiven", "Deserves got nothin' to do with it." This isn't a moral issue, it's an economical one. In a way, the illegals are making it tough on themselves. There are so many wanting to cross over that they have no bargaining power when it comes to negotiating for better pay. Also, don't forget that it is THEIR decision to come here. They're not as dumb as we think, they know the score.

"I also believe that the government is helpless to stop illegal immigration, so why bother."

Be careful here. Just because the government cannot COMPLETELY stop it doesn't mean it shouldn't TRY. The government can't completely stop domestic abuse, petty larceny, etc. either. And before you say they're not hurting anyone, check out illegal immigration on Wikipedia for a good summary of the debate. As far as taxes go, it's a good idea in theory, but under the current progressive tax system, people in the minimum wage bracket don't generate much government revenue. Indeed, much of it gets sent back due to the high number of exemptions (kids) they usually have.

Thank you hayabusa75. I guess what I mean is that I don't exactly see people in my town saying, 'Man, I want to go to California to pick grapes for pennies.' What I'm saying is that those grapes are being picked by people who need the money and that I personally believe that they should get paid minimum wage instead of a couple bucks for a whole days work. I also believe that the government is helpless to stop illegal immigration, so why bother. They are not hurting anyone. If you want to be really proper, the government could perhaps make becoming easier, so that we might be able to collect taxes.

@ Zigs
My problem is that the general consensus of the gaming community is take the little money sinkhole the ICE has put toward these raids and throw it in the big money sinkholes: The war on drugs and the war on Mexicans.

Are you implying that issues should only be dealt with if they are inexpensive? Or that the limited monetary investment in executing raids against mod chip dealers somehow makes it more worthwhile? Do you really disagree that the money involved could have been better spent?

...all the sudden the country is at some imagined carry capacity and the white man is losing his place in the work force to illegals...

It has nothing to with population capacity. If you think that's the case, you are seriously unhinged. The same goes for the "white man" comment; it's not about race, it's about the law being broken and people without entitlement taking advantage of the system. They don't pay their dues, yet the reap the benefits. That seems right to you?

And playing the race card in this issue makes you about as bad as these "RE5 is intentionally racist" people. Grow up.

...ICE should not have the capacity for no-knock raids. Organizations [...] should not have the political sway to instigate said raids.

Sorry... was someone suggesting otherwise?

By saying issues like drugs and Mexicans are more important you are basically saying you support no-knock raids and would support continued government funding thereof.

Wait, so... by saying we don't approve of these mod chip raids and think ICE should be pursuing more worthwhile endeavors, we're actually saying we do support raids?

...what?

...bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch.

My thoughts exactly.

And for the record, when I said I didn't know what your problem was, I was referring to the "that kid is ugly" comment. Way to fly off the handle.

@Eli Gundry:

First off, good job taking the time to make the video, even if you were serious about the T-shirt thing. Don't worry about the comments on your appearance too much, after all this is the Internet and you will run into that kind of immaturity sometimes.

"Also, I’m for Mexicans crossing the border. I think that they should get paid more for jobs that I wouldn’t personally do."

Have you been taught about skilled vs. unskilled labor at your high school yet? Essentially, that's why they don't get paid more. IMO, you shouldn't be advocating illegal immigration just because they'll do the shit jobs. Basically, you're saying that it's OK to break the law if the end justifies the means.

Also, I'm for Mexicans crossing the border. I think that they should get paid more for jobs that I wouldn't personally do.

I tried an external mike (you can see it in the video), but it wasn't much better. And, after about half an hour on Sony Vegas, I wasn't able to get it any louder. Also, I don't appreciate the comments about my apparence. You little pricks haven't made a video, so shut up.

Truth be told, I'm only in it for the t-shirt.

My problem is that the general consensus of the gaming community is take the little money sinkhole the ICE has put toward these raids and throw it in the big money sinkholes: The war on drugs and the war on Mexicans. No one seemed to give two shits about illegal Mexicans in 2005, now all the sudden the country is at some imagined carry capacity and the white man is losing his place in the work force to illegals and bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch.

My argument is that the ICE should not have the capacity for no-knock raids. Organizations like the MPA, MPAA, RIAA and ESA should not have the political sway to instigate said raids. The DEA... their assets should be sold and the money put to something not useless.

By saying issues like drugs and Mexicans are more important you are basically saying you support no-knock raids and would support continued government funding thereof. My take is "you (ICE, DEA) fucked up, now you get to go away forever." It seems nowadays the only thing our government is actually good at is wasting massive amounts of money in very short order.

Oh, and you aren't rich and more importantly can't vote, so no Republican will give a shit about you.

Hey guys, I made this. It is very hard to get a good sound out of that webcam. BTW, I'm 16.

@ Eli
Can't you bypass the webcam mic? Set up a standalone mic or headset closer to you if possible. Age aside, if you make a valid question and pose it in a mature fashion, I'm all for it.

And ignore Zigs. I don't know what the hell his problem is.

@zigs

that's a very pessimistic way to look at it, what i'm saying is even if they are on our side, agaisnt us, or are apathetic about the issue chances are pretty good that they haven't heard about the raids because it's not big news, nor is piracy and gaming at the top of most candidates list in terms of pressing issues (and it shouldn't be).

@~the1jeffy

Since I couldn't hear the little shit I passed judgment on the video based on what was available. If he wants me to talk about him whining about mod chips he should invest in a fuckin' mic.

You know why I didn't comment on the appearance of any other contributors? I could hear them.

Transcript:
"Recently, Immigrations and Customs raided the homes of 14 video game modders. Many within the gaming community feel that with drugs and immigrants crossing the border every day unchecked, these raids are a waste of time. Do you feel that raids like these are justified? What are you willing to do about video game piracy?"

So he brings up the Mexican/Drugs argument. Now I hate him anyway. Thanks for playing ~the1jeffy. And thanks to Trin for contributing something useful.

does he or anyone esle here really expect the republican candidates to know about this? I bet these raids are news to them (I mean no offence to republicans, I bet the democractic candidates don't know anything about the raids either).

@Father Time
Chances are slim-to-nil, most of them are in it for the neglectful incompetent parents that make up middle class America, whereas this is more of a gamer issue. Or a big brother issue, depending on how you look at it.

Thanks, Trin. I was going to do that, but the work laptop has horrible speakers (I first watched this one from home), and the video does have very, very low audio. You beat me to the punch.

Anyway, perhaps he should speak louder, because the combo of poor recording hardware and the likelihood of poor playback hardware, coupled with YouTube compression, makes the video rather useless, because instead of discussing the content, we only get people talking about the sound quality. Try a re-shoot. The video does have a valid question, but it gets lost in the presentation.

I could hear it fine, at max. Basically, why are you raiding us for video game modding (possibly not even piracy) with bigger problems like illegal immigration and drugs and violence? what are you going to do about piracy.

Alas, it will probably be swept under the carpet. But it was good.

@ Zigs

I'm sure his state of 'ugliness' is deeply relevant in your worldview, but to me, your needless insult just makes anything else you say completely without merit.

Ditto. Had my PC volume at max, and my headphones at max too. Couldn't hear a thing... :(
-- If your wiimote goes snicker-snack, check your wrist-strap...

umm, my Titanium Power Mac's Kung-Fu powers are VERY strong, but not strong enough to hear what this kid said. anyone have a transcript?

-mw

God damn! I had it at the highest volume and still couldn't hear shit. Why was this video even posted on here? You can't hear a word the kid says.

Couldn't understand a fuckin' word but man that kid is ugly.

I'm betting this one ends up in the recycle bin rather than the debate.

Too bad the sound was so low.

Politicians will look at this young man and dismiss him as 12 immediately. And it's a shame, he makes a good point. I am working on a video myself, it's harder than it looks!

@ PhoenixZero

I have submitted one. I am wearing a shirt and tie. But it is nice to see the quality of questions rising though.

Couldn't hear a damn thing he said but is he even 18? Maybe it's just me but it would probably be preferable for submitters to be voting age and hopefully not have the stereotypical "gamer" look.

Where's one of our attorney posters when we need them?!

the sound is very very very low.

What did he ask? I couldn't hear.

NeenekoThey have and exercise control over which games are allowed on their privately controlled 'open forum'. Their endorsement is fairly minimal since it is only 'we do not reject this', but it is still an endorsement of sorts.12/17/2014 - 3:58pm
NeenekoHistorically there have been issues with libraries allowing some groups but not others. Perhaps 'endorsement' is too strong a word, but their editorial control IS a preapproval process, even if the standards are pretty minimal.12/17/2014 - 3:56pm
E. Zachary KnightLet's put this a different way. My local library allows any group to reserve and use multipurpose rooms. That does not mean that the Library endorses all events that take place in those rooms.12/17/2014 - 12:54pm
E. Zachary KnightValve's editorial control comes from removing problem games and accepting games to Steam. They make no claim over any games otherwise.12/17/2014 - 12:52pm
E. Zachary KnightNeeneko, It is not at all a form of endorsement. Grenlight is an open forum for game developers to pitch their game to Valve/Steam and Steam users. Does Valve have some editorial control? Yes, but not to the point that they preapprove games.12/17/2014 - 12:51pm
Neeneko@EZK - I disagree. Greenlight is built off Valve's brand. While not an explicit endorsement, it is a form of it, otherwise Greenlight would have no value over other platforms.12/17/2014 - 12:05pm
