GP on Joystiq: The Mod Squad

August 13, 2007 -
...the one in which taxpayer GP summons up some righteous indignation over Homeland Security forces being used to protect Microsoft and Nintendo against American citizens instead of protecting American citizens against foreign threats.

Catch it only on Joystiq...

@Diceman

By and large the people that have issues with illegal immigrants have nothing against legal immigrants. It has little to do with racism, and a lot to do with them not paying taxes, using taxpayer funded services, integration problems created by being illegal residents, sending money out of the country to their families instead of their families coming here, and gang problems that have cropped up among some groups of illegal immigrants.

Not to mention that being here illegally turns them into effective second class citizens with far less legal protection and rights than is afforded to citizens.

So yeah, the problem of border security and immigration enforcement is a real issue that definitely trumps a few small time console modders.

@Diceman

Umm, what? The illegal immigration issue has been around since at least the 80s and it's REALLY been an issue on states bordering Mexico for a long time, long before either Bush was president.

Then of course, there's that pesky Canadian boarder that's about as secure as a bowling ball being held up by a string.

I think Illegal immigration is wrong but legal immigration I strongly support. I think it is unfair to people who are trying to get into this country legally to give amnesty to those coming in illegally.

@ diceman

Did I say I have any issue with work visas, or Mexcian people in general? "Let's increase border security," is not moot, because there are ways to do so, provided enough funding. The U.S. has the money, the politicians just waste it on do-nothing video game laws, or other meaningless vote-pandering, bullshit laws. Increasing our border security (north, south, and the ports) has little to do with immigration and most to do with keeping biological weapons or similar from having a tip-toe through the tulips to a major metropolitan area. In an age where google maps can give me 3D views of cities, where spy satellites can pick up license plates, and where the internet is available at the touch of your finger in most areas of the U.S., don't try and tell me border security is not possible, or 'moot.'

@the1jeffy
Immigration was never a issue until bushes political backtalkers decided to make it a issue,folks have been coming up from Mexico in vast numbers since the early 1900s and we never had a problem then.

The whole "lets increase boarder security"is moot point as most illegals(or as i call them those seeking to better themselves and the life of their family)get into America on legal work visas and just overstay the visit a bit.Increasing boarder security wont stop "terrorists" from getting into America as most get in from canada or just get a passport and come here.

The real issue behind immigration has always and always will be racism so unless you are native american or one of your ancestors kicked quincy adams in the nuts you have should have no say in who should come here to better their lives.

also if you feel sparky just spam M$oft and nintendo hatemail.....im sure enough will make their filters go entirely nuts :p .maybe a few server crashes and their bandwidth bill going through the roof will change thier minds.

I agree with the authors statement and jeffy's statement because we are NOT anywhere NEAR safe. Nor will we ever be safe because of a corrupt government that listens to anyone. Aside from that the DMCA needs to be destroyed.

Unfortunately, things probably won't get much better for those who were raided in the near future.

@Terrible Tom

Bad times, eh? These times are very reminiscent of the Roaring 20's. Guess what happened shortly after ...

We have a federal government that is growing out of control. Now only to they abuse or liberty but they waste our money. And they do it in efforts to take away more freedoms and waste more of our money trying to fix a problem without realizing their efforts are creating more problems and making things worse. It getting to be out of control and if we continue on this road we are in for some bad times.

"You can't change your own oil?"

Over my dead body.

"I don't know about you, but I don't feel any safer."

Good. Because we AREN'T. Admittedly, our ports could be better protected, but every cargo container is screened for radiation, but only random numbers are actually inspected. But our southern border is a revolving door, and Mexican customs is rife with enough corruption so pose a significant risk. We are slipping back into the illusion of safety, and prominent members of both major parties are holding our security hostage for purely political goals. Everyone wants to be seen as the person who 'solves' the immigration issue. But the solution is to simply enforce laws that are on the books already, improve border security, and then deal with specific cases of illegal aliens that are already here as new issues crop up.

Too bad our DHS agents are too busy arresting console modders.

james_fudgehe'd die if he couldn't talk about Wii U :)10/20/2014 - 9:16am
Michael ChandraBy the way, I am not saying Andrew should stop talking about Wii-U. I find it quite nice. :)10/20/2014 - 8:53am
Michael Chandra'How dare he ignore my wishes and my advice! I am his boss! I could have ordered him but I should be able to say it's advice rather than ordering him directly!'10/20/2014 - 8:52am
Michael ChandraIf GP goes "EZK, do not talk about X publicly for a week, we're preparing a big article on it" and he still tweets about X, they'd have a legitimate reason to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 8:52am
Michael ChandraIf GP tells Andrew "we'd kinda prefer it if you stopped talking about Wii-U for 1 week" and he'd tweet about it anyway, firing him for it would be idiotic.10/20/2014 - 8:51am
Michael ChandraLegal right, sure. But that doesn't make it any less pathetic of an excuse.10/20/2014 - 8:50am
ZippyDSMleeYou mean right to fire states.10/20/2014 - 8:50am
james_fudgesome states have "at will" employee laws10/20/2014 - 7:50am
quiknkoldIt says in the article that being in florida, you can get fired regardless if its a fireable offence10/20/2014 - 7:19am
Michael ChandraIf your employee respectfully disagrees with your advice, that's not a fireable offense. If they ignore your order, THEN you have the right to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 6:49am
Michael ChandraI... Don't get one thing. If you do not want your employee to do X, why do you tell them it's advice or a wish? Give them a damn order.10/20/2014 - 6:48am
james_fudgeA leak that had me worried about being swatted by Lizard Squad.10/20/2014 - 6:03am
james_fudgeIt should be noted that the author leaked the GJP group names online10/20/2014 - 6:03am
MechaTama31I mean, of the groups being bullied here, which of the two would you refer to collectively as "nerds"?10/19/2014 - 11:30pm
MechaTama31But that's the thing, it doesn't sound to me like he is advocating bullying, it sounds like he is accusing the SJWs of bullying the "nerds", who I can only assume refers to the GGers.10/19/2014 - 11:21pm
Andrew EisenInteresting read. Unfortunately, too vague to form an opinion on but at least now I know what faefrost was talking about in James' editorial.10/19/2014 - 10:39pm

Neo_DrKefkaOnly good thing I seen come out of the Biddle incident was the fact a professional fighter offered to give 10k to an anti bullying charity for a round in the ring with Biddle.10/19/2014 - 7:49pm
