New 'Playing Columbine' Clip Airs on Dawson College Shooting Anniversary

September 14, 2007
One year ago, GamePolitics and other outlets reported on a rampage shooting at Dawson College in Montreal.

The shooter, Kimveer Gill, was a deeply troubled 26-year-old whose pastimes included playing Super Columbine Massacre RPG, a controversial game which examines the infamous 1999 school shooting.

In the interim, SCMRPG creator Danny Ledonne announced he was working on a film about the game. Dawson survivor Joel Kornek created Kill Thinking, a website designed to help young people in crisis. In the wake of the Dawson rampage, Ledonne and Kornek connected, as Ledonne describes in a press release issued yesterday on the first anniversary of the Dawson shooting:
Shooting survivor Joel Kornek promptly emailed the game's creator, Danny Ledonne - scolding him for ever creating the game.  In the months that followed, Ledonne and Kornek corresponded often and with great candor about the purpose of the game, the reasons as to why school shootings happen, and what they could each do to prevent them.

...The documentary "Playing Columbine" and the website "Kill Thinking," ...have now fused together... they aim to continue challenging the public to think more carefully about why such events occur and challenging the press to reconsider how they cover such events.

I was checking out the wikipedia article on Kimveer Gill and surprisingly it says that Super Columbine Massacre RPG was not mentioned in his blog and is unknown whether he did played it. I wish the Police, who I believe hold the latest version of his blog, would tell us about that.
This is a pleasant surprise. I am glad they were able to make up their differences and work together to better the world. Now if we can only get certain politicians and lawyers to do the same.
In before Nostradomus :P

That Kornek and Ledonne were able to come to terms and work together is a powerful endorsement, and what I've seen of this documentary makes me very interested in seeing the completed film.
Don't expect full disclosure on Kimveer Kil... like ever. This is Canada were talking about here.
Perhaps, but people will still believe such a misconception without any tangible evidence which may lead to more misunderstanding. However, the video game "Postal" is mentioned often in his blog.
This has really gotten me interested in what could come out of this. I agree with anyone else thats thinking that this film might show us what else we can do to help each other. May I ask how GP feels about the film, as it is not mentioned in the article.
This is quite interesting I must say.
well i say the game is a documentery of sorts...although not realistic still documents...id suggest going after "bowling for comlumbine" by the fatass from phycho
I really can't wait for this to come out, it looks very interesting, if not for exploring Columbine, then exploring societie's perceptions of video games.
I hope the movie has better technique than the game did. Content aside, the gameplay mechanics were absolute crap - not picking up Ecce Homo means I have to restart the game? Come on.
@ Simon:

Don't worry, man. At no point in the documentary will you have to restart the film if there's something you didn't pick up - but when it comes out on DVD you can restart it as often as you'd like. :)
I appreciated SCMRPG, but I do believe the game went to hell when...well...you did. I'll probably check out this film, as well.
This looks to be a really well done and thoughtful documentry that I'm really looking forward to. I'm not sure if it will get the press it deserves because,a t least from this clip it doesn't offer any easily digestible 30 second sound bits or neatly packaged solution to play on the nightly news, but I do think it will have a positive impact.
Awesome. This is going to be one of those films that you wish everyone would watch, but nobody will.
I hate to say it, but despite the fact that I believe what I've seen is correct, I don't think it's going to do anything other than make people like me who already agree, go out and keep agreeing with the viewpoint we've held all along.

I'm just looking, and I'm thinking that it won't be effective if they plan to jump right into sympathising for the creators of a colombine RPG.
this clip certainly was informative, but i have to sadly agree with Jay.

i don't know if the documentary is going to sway people, but i am now definately interested in getting a copy.
I agree with Jay, unless this gets some mainstream attention its not going to achieve much, a shame really since it has some good points to put to society.
From a filmmaking standpoint, I have to ask, is this movie going to entirely be made up of soundbites? Cause if so, it could drag and get boring real fast. That clip, though interesting, was already starting to drag. Half of the non-interview shots in the film didn't make sense either. Like the shot of the Fox News pundit with no dialogue and no caption and then when there was a caption, it wasn't a direct link to what was being said. It just felt like a stab at Fox News, which I don't generally mind, but give some reason when doing it or else you open yourself up to criticism...and now I'm reviewing a preview on a site that didn't make the film and so I should be quiet.
@ Rudger:

Thanks for the feedback. I am going to be mindful of the mix of content; the story is told by about fifty people and will feature a variety of footage including videogames, contemporary cultural references, and press about the game and related issues. The Fox News pundit was interviewing Brian Flemming (who was speaking about the mainstream media) so it wasn't an arbitrary bit of Fox but rather illustrates Flemming's own experience on cable news. There is a bit of this shown WITH audio earlier in the film so that may help form that connection for audiences.

It's encouraging to hear from everyone that this clip raised their interest level. Yes, generally there may be something to the "if you don't already get it, you won't get it by watching this film." However, many of the people I interview share their transformation from disgust to support for my game and my cause - perhaps this will shed light on a similar transformation for the viewer. Joel Kornek is one of them! He wrote me a really angry email after getting out of the Montreal hospital last fall... but the more we talked the more he realized that we were on the same side of the debate. Now we're working together. This story isn't an isolated incident, either.

In terms of who sees this film, well, that's largely up to a brave distributor who's willing to circulate it and/or a general word of mouth from the public. I think this film is important for gamers to see - so there's half of America right there! Of course, bad films don't get recognition regardless so my focus now is on cutting the best documentary I can. Peace out for now, GP readers.
The only way this film will really make a difference is if a major news network gets the word out about it.

They could try and talk to the daily show or perhaps one of the morning news shows on NBC or something, lots of people watch them.

I hope that this gets out...it could be a voice among all the naysayers.

Mike
Excellent work, Danny!
Bravo. I'd love to see your documentary at least nominated for an Oscar.
i like how it says the shooters past times include colombine rpg. i wouldnt say the game was really a past time. thats like saying since i saw an episode of everybody loves rammon im now an avid fan. which is not the case, i was just very bored and waiting for the simpsons to come on.
"challenging the press to reconsider how they cover such events"
do they really have to try harder to spin news into such bombastity in order to gain viewer ship?

Good work Danny Ledonne, keep trying to show the masses why its a good idea to think for yourself and challenge your way of thought!
[...] In honor of the one year anniversary of the tragic shooting at Dawson College, Danny Ledonne has released a special edit trailer of his coming-soon documentary Playing Columbine: A True Story of Video Game Controversy. [...]
Well, I guess you've heard quite a few of these, but this is looking out to be one fantastic documentary Danny! I can't wait to see the full version.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the Full Version of this Documentary. Hopefully it can open people's eyes and show that there's more then just Video games that make up these sorts of instances...I dunno for some reason watching that bit made me feel a little better specially since I can see people attempting to point out whats going on...though it did worry me at the same time some of the stuff that was said.

Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.

JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.
