Vietnam Memorial Wall To Be Recreated in Second Life

September 22, 2007
As U.S. military casualties continue to mount in Iraq we note that those who gave their all in another unpopular war are to be honored in Second Life.

As reported by 3pointD, Washington, D.C.'s famed Vietnam Memorial Wall is under construction in SL:
...Timed to open in November to coincide with the 25th anniversary of its original dedication, Meme Science are building a replica of the Vietnam War Memorial, commonly known as The Wall, in Second Life. The Wall lists all 58, 253 US service personnel killed or missing in the Vietnam war.

The Second Life version of the Vietnam Wall is being funded by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and will be unveiled to the public in early November.
The island will feature all 3 components of the memorial: The Wall; the Three Soldiers statue and the Vietnam Women’s Memorial. Information and name search facilities are planned, along with the option to leave virtual items... at The Wall.

The purpose is to provide a contemplative space for remembering the U.S. servicemen and women who died in Vietnam. It will be tied into a website that will offer name search facilities, research resources and more... the aim of the island is not political, it is simply to honour those who had given their lives and provide an education resource for those wishing to find out more...

Interesting, this could provide a way for folks unable to visit the wall to see it. I wonder if folks from other countries will follow suit and create their memorial or monuments on Second Life.

We'll put one up for the First World War.

It was even more pointless than Vietnam, and it killed millions of men, women and children.

"those who had given their lives"

I don't want to be a dick, but i'm not sure that's the best wording.

"those who lost their lives" would probably be better. No-one wanted to be in Vietnam after 1968.

unlike the real wall, this one will be constantly vandalized "for lulz" because there are a lot of jerks who play SL.

@Conejo

And, more importantly, the jerks can hide behind anonymity.

@Conejo & Amarkov

Even if they don't, I can say, having visited the real Memorial, that it can't hope to be even a very good substitute.

I think the idea is awesome.

Sounds freaking lame if you ask me.

What benefit does anyone get out of this? Nothing.
Who actually gives a rat shit about a low-res digital model of a wall? Nobody.

Not to add that the wall will be ignored and/or vandalized by pretty much every one.

Well, It sounds like a good idea in theory. but like the above commentors have said...Lots of anonymous jerks in that game.

Lots? 80% of the population. Minimum. Do I need to mention the "patriotic niggers"?

I guess I am not against this, however I think it is a stupid idea. People are going to fly and jump all over it, vandalize it, equip their prosthetic penises, etc. Frankly I get sick of all this SL stuff. I think the SL community thinks they are changing the world or something. The fact that money is wasted by politicians campaigning in SL, companies marketing there, and stuff like this just seems stupid.

[...] The Vietnam memorial will be recreated in Second Life. [...]

Good article, silly comments.

Fact:
it's pretty simple to set up a Second Life area so it _cannot be_ easily vandalized.
That is, you _can_ avoid penises flying around your area - you just have to set a couple of land options the right way.

It looks like most people here is talking about what they learnt about Second Life on mainstream media. Let me reveal you a secret: mainstream media are not a good information source if you're interested in new media or creativity / communication tools.

Andrew EisenThat article is over five years old, Uncharted. A fun blast from the past though.02/12/2012 - 10:47pm

ZenI felt Brutal Legends was a funny & beautiful look at the world of rock from Double Fines point of view. The only parts I wasn't hot for were the RTS bits as it felt forced. Otherwise fantastic.02/12/2012 - 1:34pm
DorthLousPassed 1.5M$. And I'd also say that Brutal Legend is far from being a bad game. I just think it was a few levels under what people expected from the people working on the project.02/11/2012 - 8:25am
TechnogeekBrutal Legend wasn't bad so much as "marketing had no idea how the game actually played", causing it to suffer accordingly.02/10/2012 - 10:38pm

GuamishI think it is in good hands. Tim did a game for the GDC award show and that was fun for how short it was.02/10/2012 - 12:22pm
