Booze Cruise: The Game

October 6, 2007 -
Here's something to think about as you head out for your Saturday night...

As reported by Reuters, a serious games prof at the University of Calgary is developing Booze Cruise, a drunk driving simulator. The goal is to make teenagers think twice about drinking and driving. Said Prof. Jim Parker:
The basic story is that this person is absolutely pissed and woke up in the trunk of their car and now is going to drive home. And then just for fun, we put distractions on the side of the road, like pink elephants.

This is aimed not at adults, this is aimed at people who are 13 to 16. We want to stop them from doing it in advance.

In the game, the player's field of vision is narrowed and blurred. Reaction times are slowed as well in order to mimic the effects of intoxication.

I am smashed right now. Also I don't see elephants and shit when I'm drunk.

I'M GONNA KILL EVERYONES CAT!

KILL MINE, KILL MINE!!!

is there ranks for this game? Top 10 Drunk Drivers or something lmao ...if u really good u gotta drink alot to get ur blood alcohol level up and maybe ull really have a challenge

Counting down until our good friend tries to claim they're encouraging drunk driving... 10... 9... 8...

I think it should be noted that in Britain, pissed means drunk, not angry.

@Father Time

I use it for either. 'Tis great fun! Now I need a drink and Stairway to Heaven.

So, if we practice and get really good at this drunk-driving simulation... will we become skilled drunk-drivers?

I'd play it.

@AbsumZer0

Absynthe (sp?) will get you skilled at it much faster. Or Moonshine. If you survive either that is..

lol booze cruise.

@ AbsumZer0

I was thinking the same thing.

"Oh No! We are training our kids to drive while drunk now!"

But seriously, this is a good idea. It shows the kids the affect of alcohol on their ability to drive in a safe environment.

Only the most evil of soon to be ex attorneys would take this as a bad thing.

What an interesting idea.

Who wants to bet that the mainstream media and the eventual ex-lawyer will spin this into a game that promotes drinking and driving?

(Don't everybody raise their hands at once).

I think this is a good idea. Several people, including the nefarious "you-know-who" will disagree, but hopefully he doesn't even bother with any of his tiresome commentary.

"But seriously, this is a good idea. It shows the kids the affect of alcohol on their ability to drive in a safe environment."

And, you gotta admit, it sounds like a challenging and really goddamn fun gaming experience. You can add all the educational shit in the world, but if the game sucks, no one will play it. This sounds like the middle of the road, and I think it may stand a chace to be effective.

I just really hope GP makes the announcement when a public beta/alpha/anything becomes available. I can't wait to play this.

Greatest DD sim is the InitalD pc game, the controls suck miserably.

What do you tell the kids who get really good at this game?

I saw this on the sympatico/msn homepage
I just think it's funny they way they describe it.

I saw it, emailed dennis about it, and passed on. didn't bother a second read.

Seriously it sounds fun for anyone of any age. I've always wanted to know how it felt driving drunk without accutally driving. XD

It is a good idea, I'm just concerned that putting 'pink elephants' in as well mixes the message. If the point is to show the player how hard it is to drive drunk (and possibly the consequences of messing up / killing someone ) we should not encourage that very behavior by showing how cool being tripped out is.

Don't get me wrong, I like my bong and mesqualin like any other art school CEO. I just want to make sure that if we are sending a positive, progressive message to children and seriously trying to educate them on the dangers and difficulties of drunk driving, we actually do it right.

addl...

besides, not many alcoholic beverages cause you to hallucinate. So why 'lie' to kids about that?

It sounds interesting however I would like to more about these distractions........................

.

That's the best game title since Rebel Without a Pulse.
And it actually sounds fun. Not that I condone this sort of thing IRL. Just yesterday there was a double fatality a few miles from where I live in which alcohol was involved.

I don't know about this one. There was a level in Wing Commander 3 where you go on a mission really drunk. I did VERY well.

I refuse to drive if I've had more than two drinks. But one thing I love to do is get drunk and play gran turismo. I do very well at that too.

My assumption is that I probably could drive drunk, but I don't want to.

Others might use it as justification to drive drunk.

@Stop Shifting Blame

Of course he won't. This has nothing to do with Take-Two, Sony, or Microsoft. Those are the only entities in gaming he thinks exists.

I was thinking about this. If the delayed response of the controls we randomized at certain intervals, that would prevent the player from mastering the delay. Thus preventing them from getting good at "driving drunk"

Also the pink elephants are meant to be a bit of humor to prevent the game from being too serious.

This game is terrible. It does not help prevent drunk driving. The game looks more like you're on acid than alcohol. See for yourself.

COP KILLA!!

"Whoa dudes, what are you waiting in lie here at gamestop for? I thought they were sold out of Halo 3 copies!"

"HALO 3? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? WE'RE HERE TO BUY BOOZE CRUISE, THE ANTI-DRUNK DRIVING GAME."

...Sigh.

Wonder if it's like that one mission in Vice City where you have to drive Phil to the doctor?

Heh, this is actually a pretty good idea.
Booze Cruise will show how bad drunk driving is, and with some humor in it, so that it isn't like one of those government productions you see every so often in school.

And if that fails, weeeeeell... maybe there's that part of the mind that will 'train' on driving drunk so if you are drunk, you might be a bit more safe.

It's just speculation though.

The best approach is a random incident generator put in, so you can't anticipate how or what's going to come up. If it's all pre-programmed, then you're going to get people memorizing patterns and such and thinking they can handle a real car while drunk.

If people learned how to drive while drunk, then wouldn't the world be a safer place?

@Father Time

You can tell when you're drunk? I can't..

Stairway To Heaven owns your Faces!

SO DOES TO FRANCE!

I dunno what crap you're doing, but I find that "I’M GONNA KILL EVERYONES CAT!" almost offensive.

Last time I drank to where I saw the kind of shit that the game puts on the screen, there was a little extra something in the tequila. And that photo at the top of the info page, it looks a bit like the developers had been doing some field research when that photo was taken.

As for Wing Commander 3, I don't remember any drunk mission. Which one was that?

Bad, bad idea.

Some kid is going to master this game, before he ever takes a single sip of alcohol, and then think he has it down pat in real life.

The Future of Drunk Driving...

University of Calgary professor Jim Parker and a number of his students are developing a drunk driving simulator. While enjoying a session of “Booze Cruise”, you can expect your vision to be blurred and reaction time to be slowed. This only...

MechaTama31But that's the thing, it doesn't sound to me like he is advocating bullying, it sounds like he is accusing the SJWs of bullying the "nerds", who I can only assume refers to the GGers.10/19/2014 - 11:21pm
