Greenpeace Dings Nintendo, Other Console Makers Over Environmental Concerns

November 28, 2007 -
Nintendo may be raking in the green with its sold-out Wii console, but it doesn't practice green manufacturing, according to environmental watchdog Greenpeace.

As reported by News.com, Nintendo scored a zero on Greenpeace's quarterly Guide to Greener Electronics, the first global brand ever to do so. Also scoring badly: Xbox 360 manufacturer Microsoft.

Part of Nintendo's awful score apparently results from the company's failure to provide any information on its manufacturing practices:
Nintendo [scored] zero in the five categories related to the use of harmful chemicals, including offering no list of banned or restricted substances and no policy regarding the use of vinyl plastic or brominated flame retardants. It also scored zero in the four categories related to recycling.

Comments

Greenpeace's beef with vinylated plastics is pure unadulterated nonsensical scare mongering.

~~All Knowledge is Worth Having~~

If i impale people, they turn green after a few days. The service i provide saves the world, ends world hunger, and promotes world piece.

And actually, I did some research and discovered that Nintendo is one of the greenest electronics companies around, recycling 70% of the waste they generate and using at least 80% recycled paper in all of its shipping packaging. So, IN YOUR FACE, GREENPEACE!

"They make Greenpeace angry? Yet another reason to go Nintendo."

QFT

I like how they don't even compare energy usage in this competition yet. That to me would be one of the first ones on the list.

@ Baramos

The Wii does use MUCH less power than the 360 or PS3.

Shaesyco
Perhaps but polution dose, lets dial back all the sht we throw into the enviroment some.

PETA is PCisim at tis best, nothing like zero tolerance of reason.

@ ecoterrorist

Are you Pandralisk's evil twin?

I think Greenpeace is just peeved because Nintendo has ALWAYS been a secretive company, and they don't like people holding out on them. I don't think it's a matter of them not being environmentally friendly, Greenpeace is just mad that they weren't above Nintendo's rules on disclosure. Good for the Big N in my book.

Boo PETA, i'll eat meat, and wear fur if I feel like it. As long as people aren't killing animals for the sake of killing animals, you're wrong.

Boo greenpeace, I am sick of you guys protesting everything but the kitchen sink these days. They seriously won't be pleased until we all become Amish...

...Then they'll complain that we aren't using 100% recycled wood on our barns...

...Then the PETA will accuse us all of animal abuse when we ride our horses around town...

*sigh*

Oh right, I forgot: The Wii uses MUCH less energy than the PS3, yet Sony has a 7.7 on their scale. I hate arbitrary number assignments...

In the words of Cartman, "I hate hippies, they say they care about the enviroment, but all they do is lay around and smoke pot and stuff."

So now the Wii is causing environmental damage to the Earth and I only thought that pollution and greenhouse gases were to blame. Curse you Wii and 360 you will kill us all!!!!!
(note this is all sarcastic)

In other news, noone gives two shits about what a bunch of drugged-up hippy vigelantes think.

Ok, so Nintendo didn't disclose anything to Greenpeace. No surprise there. Nintendo has a history of being tight lipped.

Aaah greenpeace, such an eighties fad still trying to look cool. What a waste.

"[Nintendo] also scored zero in the four categories related to recycling."

WTF? Nintendo uses recycled paper and plastic all the time.
BTW, does anyone remember when they stopped including those little plastic cases with Game Boy games?

岩「…I can see why Hasselbeck's worried about fake guns killing fake people. afterall, she's a fake journalist on a fake news channel」

what about the PS3?

@soullexx

Sony's likely worse, but hey, President Jackson likely said otherwise.

You guys can't see this, but i'm totally rolling my eyes right now.

Maybe if they dug at all they would have found something.

Nintendo is a Japanese company, it sort of makes sense that information would be in Japanese. Greenpeace is back at their bongs trying to figure out how to be alarmists next.

its seems Greenpeace wants to take on Gamers, and geeks, I think we all know how it will turn out.

Andrew EisenMichael Chandra - Unless I overlooked it, we haven't seen how the directive to not talk about whatever he wasn't supposed to talk about was phrased so it’s hard to say if it could have been misconstrued as a suggestion or not.10/20/2014 - 12:35pm
Andrew EisenHey, the second to last link is the relevant one! He actually did say "let them suffer." Although, he didn't say it to the other person he was bickering with.10/20/2014 - 12:29pm

Neo_DrKefkaThat is correct in an At-Will state you or the employer can part ways at any time. However Florida also has laws on the books about "Wrongful combinations against workers" http://www.flsenate.gov/Laws/Statutes/2012/448.04510/20/2014 - 10:07am

Michael ChandraIf GP goes "EZK, do not talk about X publicly for a week, we're preparing a big article on it" and he still tweets about X, they'd have a legitimate reason to be pissed.10/20/2014 - 8:52am
Michael ChandraIf GP tells Andrew "we'd kinda prefer it if you stopped talking about Wii-U for 1 week" and he'd tweet about it anyway, firing him for it would be idiotic.10/20/2014 - 8:51am
