Hillary Campaign Poll Probes Gaming Habits

December 13, 2007 -
Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton wants to know about your gaming habits.

A lengthy list of questions from a Clinton campaign poll has been published on the Huffington Post. Along with the usual inquiries into political views, demographics and the like are a couple of questions which probe the subject's gaming and online activities:
Which of the following have you visited or played online?

Sim City
Second Life
Sims
None of the above
Other
Don’t know

It's interesting that the Clinton poll mentions only three games by name. All are either PC or primarily PC games; would seem to have a higher ratio of female players than the average game; and none of the three feature violence as a main theme. We're not sure that's the reason for their inclusion, simply trying to find a common thread.

There's also a question about Internet usage:
Which activities do you do online most?

Research issues or questions
Use a webcam
Share digital photos
Download music or video
Read or post to blogs
Research products or services
Watch video sites like youtube
Email
Shop
Read the news
Play video games
Instant message
Online banking or bill pay
Use online social networks
Talk on the phone using VOiP

There’s also a question about Internet usage:

Methinks the post is a bit messed up Dennis... Unless you're activly editing it right now...

I guess you ARE! :)

Ok, back to the topic - you'd think they'd ask some more relevant questions about the games we play... Sim City? Second Life? Sims? Where's Halo? Where's World of Warcraft? Where's Battlefield 2? Starcraft? Supreme Commander? City of Heroes? Freakin' EVERQUEST?

How out of touch with reality is her campaign if the best games they can come up with are those miserable 3?

Although not labeled as "violent", it's interesting to include Second Life, which has received a great deal of controversy. I don't know if she already has one, but maybe they are trying to scope out if they should have a campaign HQ on Second Life as well. But, hey, games are kid's toys aren't they? Why should she be interested in having a political HQ there? Oh, wait, it would BENEFIT her. So it would be ok if it BENEFITED her. Otherwise, it's just there to mentally molest kids (I know it was her phrase, but her attitude in the past associates her with it).

isn't she the only major candidate for 2008 to not be taking part in the digg.com's 2008 election site? shes desperately out of touch really, isn't she?

The game questions should have tickboxes to select genre (obviously with examples) rather than individual games, it'd be better data gathering.

Also as part of the online activities thing, where's the 2 most common activities: "Look at porn" and "Delete/ignore spam"

If she really wants to make waves, she'll start a WoW guild.

"Online banking or bill pay"
Is she insinuating that some people might actually subscribe to an ISP just to pay their bills? Isn't that a bit counterproductive? (granted, she wouldn't have written the survey, Iknow)

Also: "Download music or video"
With the state of litigation down there, would anyone be stupid enough to admit to that?

This is an interesting survey. I do wonder what the goal behind the game question is. The internet one can be used to step up advertising on specific websites. But gaming?

Maybe she plans to open a SL HQ.

@Jezebeau

Well, with NetFlix, Napster, iTunes, XBL Media, ect. Downloading music and videos is perfectly legal now. Just have to pay someone for them. Also, I pay so many bills that they are a large part of my internet usage, though porn and games will always be the top two.

I didn't know Sims was online... is it?

For some reason, the fact that they listed a "Don't Know" option for the game question seems unreasonably hilarious to me.

Hm, seems the second set of questions is lacking some stuff:

Look at porn (mentioned here)
Look at child porn
Research bomb making (could go under generalised research)
Maintain Al-Queda terrorist cell (webcam / conference call / instant message, maybe)
Hack into pentagon / other governmental military systems
Illegally download media (different from what they're asking)
Credit card fraud

Uh, I ran out. The others could probably go under the communication options, and 'promote communism' is probably a bit too fuzzy a term.

Judging by the people around me, the choice of online games should've been a) World of Warcraft; b) Don't know.

But yeah, online activities really lack porn surfing and BitTorrent abuse. >.>

Maybe I'm wrong but that first question seems to be "multiple choice (pick one)." What if you play them all? AND others? Mind-blowing idea I know... :P

I'm surprised they'd include a section on Sim City, The Sims and SL, then include 'Other' as an option.

Have you every visited or used these three games..... or ANY OTHERS?

LOL @ the lack of WoW on that list...

Uh, Hillary, I'm going to say this flat out. You're a moron and need to take to focus off of the games, and onto stuff that people (who are not soccer moms or the "think of the children" type) actually care about such as the war and stuff, geeze.

Ugh, I ment take focus off. Dang this inability to not be able to edit post.

Oh wonderful! As soon as she's elected, we'll have 'rationed' time to play video games. No more than 30 minutes a day, mind you!

Will she also track time some people spend on political blogs? I think some people spend more time blogging than I do playing video games.

I'm REALLY not looking forward to this witch at all.

Overcast, take heart man, maybe sexism will outweigh racism and they'll elect a man over a white person

THIS, friends and neighbors, is why we vote Libertarian.

*shakes head*

Hitlery is a failure, and this study is going to be essentially worthless.

So someone go troll the study for the lulz while you can.

I suspect that the survey - or at least parts of it - are just slapped on as an afterthought to let people think that Hillary's camp really does care about what 's going on. Call it a political gesture.

empty and worthless you mean?

I agree with Twin-Skies, really. None of the politicians really care about video games so much as they care about making the minimalistic gestures that please the constituents.

I imagine many gamers won't respond to the poll because it's so poorly made. I wonder how that will skew the results.

A quick critique of the Huffington post:

When quoting a question answer type survey, it helps the reader to better comprehend the information when you differentiate between the questions and the answers.

A quick Critique of the actuall survey:

What is with all the questions about our opinions on celebrities?

Also this part was nice:

Which of the following candidates would you vote for in the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008?

Mike Gravel

Dennis Kucinich

John Edwards

Chris Dodd

Joe Biden

Barack Obama

Hillary Clinton

Bill Richardson

Who is your second choice?

Mike Gravel

Dennis Kucinich

John Edwards

Chris Dodd

Joe Biden

Hillary Clinton

Bill Richardson

Take a close look. This may be a typo from the Huffington, but it made me laugh. Barack Obama is missing from the second list. To me this makes it look like Obama is a shoe in for first choice.

But that may be a typo by the Huffington (which is not surprising from the lack of formatting of the article in question).

Well that is a pretty ridiculous survey. It makes me wonder if she has something against Will Wright. Also, I don't think sim city is online. I know there is the sims online (but who would be on that anymore) and I don't really know if I would actually qualify second life as a game. Is it supposed to be fun or something?

My guess is whatever game gets the highest votes, she will attack.

Maybe she should have researched the more popular online games and put them on the list instead of one that probably is dead, one that even I didn't know existed, and one I don't even think is a game in my opinion.

Although it doesn't affect me much because I'm Canadian, I don't want her in the white house. If I could vote, I'd pick Obama at this point.

Every time Hillary smiles, someone dies in a CIA prison.

I find it very insulting that she seems to think this bait tactic is going to go unnoticed by us gamers.

However, I take much solace in that fact that she stands absolutely no chance of being elected.

@BlackIce
Never heard that one is hilarious.

Hillary is an idiot, they should make Hilary a boss on WoW, and in her Treasure Chest, I could not just say chest ;), you would find Bill's Balls, attached to them, Monica ;) haha. Is it just me or is there no real candidate to be excited about this election, seems like I remember saying that in the last elections as well.

Stupid women trying to ruin gaming for her own twisted agenda.

Heres a bit of interesting trivia

http://www.sony.com/SCA/bios/seligman.shtml

@ Back the Jack

So what does her work as a counsel for Bill have to do with this?

Those three online games (though I don't remember Sim City being online, only Sim City-like online games) seem to be chosen because they appear to be made for the most casual of the casual. Just look at the people the survey is aiming for. In 4th grade I had to do a class survey, and one of the questions was what TV shows do you watch the most. They were all PBS shows, with the exception of "other". Sometimes you really gotta note the source of the poll in order for the choices to make sense.

The Answer is Other.

Hell why even list the 3 sucky titles anyways? Could it be that those that play such are likely to vote for H. Clinton?

I am curious why they did offer the normal follow-up question. "Which system(s) do you own or plan to purchase in the next 6 months? (check all that apply)" Shrug.

Maybe this is a low cost toss in to try and stave off the gamers she and her posse offended last week.

Where on that list is Myspace or even fapping to porn?

Hilary doesn't know shit.

@Roebuc

Thank you! I made it up on the spot.

Where is the quiz anyway?

^ I mean where I can send it in.

She's a crook.

She'll eb allf or video games if the voters are elanign that way..until they aren't.

Translation: "She'll be all for video games if the voters are leaning that way... Until they aren't"

SHE IS ON A MISSION WITH NO REAL OBJECT. I CAN'T HELP TO ASK, WOULD SHE LIKE TO SEE MORE KIDS OUT ON THE STREET DOING DRUGS, DRINKING BEER, AND COMMETING REAL CRIMES, THEN SIMULATING THAT ON A VIDEO GAME WERE IT IS SAFE IN THEIR HOUSE. HOW WOULD IT BE IF SHE TOLD THE SOLDIERS, THAT SHE WANTS TO TAKE OUR FREEDOM OF SPEACH AWAY, WHILE THEY SACRIFICE FOR THAT FREEDOM.

IS THIS LEMMA CHARLIE TO ANYONE.

@ BOBBY

Dude. On the left side of your keyboard, three keys from the bottom, is one that reads, "Caps Lock". Make sure that it is turned off before posting.

I found this while skimming it:
"Would stand up to President Bush and the Republicans in Congress"
Unless I am painfully unaware, Bush will be gone when the new president gets elected. Also, Congress is mainly Democrats.

Andrew EisenMichael Chandra - Unless I overlooked it, we haven't seen how the directive to not talk about whatever he wasn't supposed to talk about was phrased so it’s hard to say if it could have been misconstrued as a suggestion or not.10/20/2014 - 12:35pm
