Is Leland Yee Running for Congress?

January 6, 2008
California State Sen. Leland Yee (D) is best known to gamers as the architect of his state's contested 2005 video game law.

But Yee may be eyeing a run for Congress later this year.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Yee is among likely candidates for the seat currently held by Rep. Tom Lantos (D). The 80-year-old Lantos recently announced he would not seek reelection due to health concerns. In a statement, Yee said:
I am deeply saddened by the news that Congressman Lantos has been diagnosed with cancer and will be unable to seek another term in Congress... My thoughts and prayers are with Tom and his family during this difficult time.

In the coming days, we will take a hard look at the challenges this district faces in filling the shoes of Congressman Lantos, but today is not the day to be thinking about future political office.

Sure sounds like someone who's running. If he makes it to Congress, will Yee propose federal game legislation? It's impossible to say at this point, but it would seem a likely move for the child psychologist. Video game violence has been an important issue to him for a number of years.

Meanwhile, a U.S. appeals court is considering the California game law, which was set aside by a federal judge on constitutional grounds earlier this year.

UPDATE: We note that Yee's likely opponent, Jackie Speier (D) also voted in favor of California's video game law when she was a member of the California State Senate.

This. Is. Not. Good.

But, being my exhausted self, I can't remember in the slightest why it isn't good. Can someone please remind me what he stands for again? Thanks.

@BlackIce

Um, I think he's in favor of video game legislation, I can't remember for sure though.

Can the ECA barge in at the very moment he says that and add something, this breaking in: "Toxic chemicals found in children's toys!"?

Would be amusing.

@Anonymous

I think we all have that on our wishlists.

If he gets elected then he will try to ban games in the US. Or at least in California from everyone.

Oh dear

Fortunately games represent a lot of money in the U.S., so I don't think it's likely that games can be "shut down"

@BlackIce

Yee is for lots of laws, and big government. If you look at his overall record, it's actually understandable why he is pushing for a video game law-he's drafted a large number of other laws, some with benefits, others, bordering on excessive.

As a registered Libertarian California voter though (I just got my voter information guide a few days ago in the mail), he wont' get my support on anything ever, nor will I speak favorably of him...ever.

@Daniel

No, you are thinking of Thompson. Yee has always been very specific about what he wants. He wants to prohibit children from having access to M rated games. As far as he is concerned, adults can play whatever game they want.

However, his other positions and his attempt to violate the constitution pretty much make him unfit for any public office, much less Congress. He is a bandwagon politician and I will never endorse him.

At least he hasn't sunk so low that he will come here and troll GP and release "press releases" about him doing everything from getting up in the morning to trying to sue papa smurf for being a fictional communist character.

It's not a given that he'd make it through the primary. There are other challengers, such as Jackie Spiers, who is mentioned in the article. One thing concerned gamers could do is donate to her or other opponents once the campaigns have opened and the websites are live.

All right, I totally don't know why I garbled her name in the five seconds between reading the article and writing the comment. (Britney's fault, maybe?) Yee's potential challenger is named Jackie Speier.

This is terrible news because Senators usually act on a pace that is much more slow than that of a House Representative. Representatives seem to act very rapidly so if he gets in then we can expect many more anti-video game bills introduced. Whoever still things Jack Thompson is a legitimate problem with individuals such as Leland Yee are in Congress needs a serious reality check.(Technically, by definition, a Congressman is a Representative or a Senator) That and Democrats traditionally enjoy America's federal government parenting it's citizens. And even the Republicans(well at least the majority which are neo-conservative Republicans), which used to be about small government are now going in a direction that also supports a big brother type government.

How about we support Yee's opponent and make sure he DOESN'T get into office. We can find creative ways to contribute to this important issue or at least try to.

Shih Tzu- exactly, we should definitely donate money and effort into the opponent most likely to not sponsor any anti-video game bills.

He might not be the total whack job Thompson can be but Yee too likes to twist the truth, pick things that favor his position and flat out lie to get what he wants. Of course all doing it while ignoring other forms of media.

@ Terrible Tom

That's mainly because Representatives only have 2 year terms.

Another nanny-state California Democrat Joe Baca has tried for years at federal video-game legislation and failed miserably.

A state Senator running for Congress? Are his term limits approaching or something?

Anti-Youth, Ageist, Pro-Censorship, Anti-First Amendment, Contradictory, Two-Faced, a Lier, a Thief, A married man who drives the Streets at night looking for prostitutes, a believer in a Nanny State government that should regulate every aspect of our lives and out children's lives, a man who in 2003 said he hoped his anti-gaming bills would cause retailers to take the offending games off their shelves altogether = Leland Yee or as i would say: The Biggest Douche in the World.
Among the anti-gaming politicians, i consider him to be the worst.

Please, no. Please, NOO!

I am not from California so I'm not very familiar with this man, all thought what I read so far doesn't sound good at all. Does he have a shot at getting elected?

Father Time: I don't think State Senators have term limits in California. More likely, he's simply going for a higher office since it's an open race.

Nick: Probably. In his part of California, they'd vote for Jerry Falwell or Ann Coulter if they had a (D) next to their name.

Oh well. Even if he does successfully run, the first amendment and the court's opinion wont' change.

If the consoles would allow AO rated games or there was a new rating system I would not care as long as I get to play the uncut versions of games that I really want to play.

Leland Yee said that the consoles should just allow AO rated games by which I totally agree with him about.

If Leland is for pushing towards a new rating system that would make it so adults can play uncut games then I do not see a real problem with him on the video game situation.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Tom and his family during this difficult time. In the coming days, we will take a hard look at the challenges this district faces in filling the shoes of Congressman Lantos, but today is not the day to be thinking about future political office."

Let me translate that from politician to English:

"Oh God, I can't wait until the time they get Tom's cancer-ridden corpse in the ground. In the coming days, his seat in Congress will open up and I can start getting even bigger kickbacks from the movie industry, plus I'll be able to push my anti-game agenda at the Federal level. Today is a great day to start thinking about my strategy for getting elected."

Leland Yee is a fucking hypocrite, he just happens to be very good at sugar-coating his hypocrisy so that people will swallow it.

It is because Yee frequently supports Federal intervention of the regulation of digital interactive entertainment.

I say we try to put a Republican into office, or an Independent. Or perhaps give more attention to a third party that could spoil a Democratic run for office. The Ron Paul supporters frequently rumor they are going to start putting effort into trying to make a bigger difference in terms of electing pro-constitution representatives in Local and State elections.

Not another one

Unfortunately, I can't run against him because I'm not 25 and I can't compensate with working around the truth or the constitution, but will someone from his congressional district run against him? These days, if someone wants to be elected into Congress or Senate, they always have to make a fool out of themselves by cleaning the streets or feeding the poor as a publicity stunt. I don't think most voters will care about his stance of video games, unless his district is leaning authoritarian.
