California State Sen. Leland Yee (D) is best known to gamers as the architect of his state's contested 2005 video game law.But Yee may be eyeing a run for Congress later this year.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Yee is among likely candidates for the seat currently held by Rep. Tom Lantos (D). The 80-year-old Lantos recently announced he would not seek reelection due to health concerns. In a statement, Yee said:
I am deeply saddened by the news that Congressman Lantos has been diagnosed with cancer and will be unable to seek another term in Congress... My thoughts and prayers are with Tom and his family during this difficult time.
In the coming days, we will take a hard look at the challenges this district faces in filling the shoes of Congressman Lantos, but today is not the day to be thinking about future political office.
Sure sounds like someone who's running. If he makes it to Congress, will Yee propose federal game legislation? It's impossible to say at this point, but it would seem a likely move for the child psychologist. Video game violence has been an important issue to him for a number of years.
Meanwhile, a U.S. appeals court is considering the California game law, which was set aside by a federal judge on constitutional grounds earlier this year.
UPDATE: We note that Yee's likely opponent, Jackie Speier (D) also voted in favor of California's video game law when she was a member of the California State Senate.

But, being my exhausted self, I can't remember in the slightest why it isn't good. Can someone please remind me what he stands for again? Thanks.
Um, I think he's in favor of video game legislation, I can't remember for sure though.
Would be amusing.
I think we all have that on our wishlists.
Yee is for lots of laws, and big government. If you look at his overall record, it's actually understandable why he is pushing for a video game law-he's drafted a large number of other laws, some with benefits, others, bordering on excessive.
As a registered Libertarian California voter though (I just got my voter information guide a few days ago in the mail), he wont' get my support on anything ever, nor will I speak favorably of him...ever.
No, you are thinking of Thompson. Yee has always been very specific about what he wants. He wants to prohibit children from having access to M rated games. As far as he is concerned, adults can play whatever game they want.
However, his other positions and his attempt to violate the constitution pretty much make him unfit for any public office, much less Congress. He is a bandwagon politician and I will never endorse him.
At least he hasn't sunk so low that he will come here and troll GP and release "press releases" about him doing everything from getting up in the morning to trying to sue papa smurf for being a fictional communist character.
How about we support Yee's opponent and make sure he DOESN'T get into office. We can find creative ways to contribute to this important issue or at least try to.
That's mainly because Representatives only have 2 year terms.
Another nanny-state California Democrat Joe Baca has tried for years at federal video-game legislation and failed miserably.
Among the anti-gaming politicians, i consider him to be the worst.
Nick: Probably. In his part of California, they'd vote for Jerry Falwell or Ann Coulter if they had a (D) next to their name.
Oh well. Even if he does successfully run, the first amendment and the court's opinion wont' change.
Leland Yee said that the consoles should just allow AO rated games by which I totally agree with him about.
If Leland is for pushing towards a new rating system that would make it so adults can play uncut games then I do not see a real problem with him on the video game situation.
Let me translate that from politician to English:
"Oh God, I can't wait until the time they get Tom's cancer-ridden corpse in the ground. In the coming days, his seat in Congress will open up and I can start getting even bigger kickbacks from the movie industry, plus I'll be able to push my anti-game agenda at the Federal level. Today is a great day to start thinking about my strategy for getting elected."
Leland Yee is a fucking hypocrite, he just happens to be very good at sugar-coating his hypocrisy so that people will swallow it.
