Video Game Voters Network Targets New Mexico Game Tax Proposal

January 30, 2008

The Video Game Voters Network has issued an action alert to members in regard to a New Mexico proposal that would levy a 1% surchage on video games and TV sets.

An e-mail sent by the VGVN yesterday took environmental group the Sierra Club to task for backing the tax idea:

The Sierra Club should educate itself on the growing impact that video games, particularly the Nintendo Wii and Dance Dance Revolution have in promoting exercise across the nation...

It is unconstitutional to single out games with a special tax... Let's leave the parenting to parents, not new government programs which once again unfairly target video games.

The VGVN is operated by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which represents the interests of U.S. video game publishers.

Re: Video Game Voters Network Targets New Mexico Game Tax

While im a bit of an eviromentalist I have never really liked these groups anyway.

So why is the parent organization not saying anything about this?

It is great that they are getting the VGVN involved, but we need the ESA involved.

@EZK, I'm actually surprised they have not said anything.

I'm surprised these "tax the games" geniuses haven't justified it with some sort of "We're fighting pirating with this income" claim.

While im a bit of an eviromentalist I have never really liked these groups anyway.

I agree - if there's one thing these 'groups' really *don't* care about - it's the environment.

@ Loudspeaker

But that is punishing the innocent to make up for the criminal. That is unethical to the t.

@ EZK

I agree...

However the State of California has a tax (fee) on new monitors to cover the disposal of the hazardous materials contained in the monitor.

I was just trying to point out the mentality behind sin taxes.

...This is what I get for trying to make a coherent response at the end of the day! LOL

I guess my point is... Since when were politicians ethical? ;)

When will they create a sin tax for such groups? Targeting gamers as if a game was like whiskey, smokes or other such stuff. If they really wanted to make money then tax churches, condoms, restaurants and/or clothing products.

@ Spartan

You can't tax churches. They are covered as a non profit.

@E. Zachary Knight - I'm fully aware of the exemption status. Which I fully disagree with by the way, but that is an argument for another place and time.

The post was knee jerk reaction to the entire "sins" tax money grab angle.

DorthLousPassed 1.5M$. And I'd also say that Brutal Legend is far from being a bad game. I just think it was a few levels under what people expected from the people working on the project.02/11/2012 - 8:25am
TechnogeekBrutal Legend wasn't bad so much as "marketing had no idea how the game actually played", causing it to suffer accordingly.02/10/2012 - 10:38pm
