The Florida Supreme Court will no longer accept anything directly from controversial Miami attorney Jack Thompson. If Thompson wants to file with the Court, he's going to need to hire another lawyer to do it on his behalf.
That's the ruling handed down by the Court late this morning.
As
GamePolitics reported last month, the Florida Supreme Court issued a
show cause order demanding that Thompson explain why the sanction shouldn't be issued. Clearly, Thompson's multiple responses did nothing to change the collective mind of the Justices.
The order issued by the Court may be found
here, and the following passages are quoted from it:
After submitting inappropriate and pornographic materials to this Court, Thompson was specifically warned that should he continue to submit inappropriate filings, this Court would consider imposing a sanction limiting Thompson’s ability to submit further filings...
Since that order, Thompson has filed numerous additional filings which led this Court to issue an order directing Thompson to show cause why we should not limit his filings... We now sanction Thompson...
Thompson engaged, to the point of abuse... in a relentless and frivolous pursuit for vindication of his claim that he is being victimized by The Florida Bar...
Thompson’s multiple responses are rambling, argumentative, and contemptuous... What we cannot tolerate, however, is Thompson’s continued inability to maintain a minimum standard of decorum and respect for the judicial system to which all litigants, and especially attorneys, must adhere...
A thorough review of Thompson's filings lead to one conclusion. He has abused the processes of the Court... Accordingly... the Clerk of this Court is hereby instructed to reject for filing any future pleadings, petitions, motions, documents, or other filings submitted by John Bruce Thompson, unless signed by a member in good standing of The Florida Bar other than himself.
...Further, if Thompson submits a filing in violation of this order, he may be subjected to contempt proceedings or other appropriate sanctions.
For his part, Thompson has sent out an e-mail describing the Supreme Court's order as both "good news" and "idiotic."
GP: Just to be clear, this sanction imposed by the Florida Supreme Court is a separate issue from Thompson's Bar Trial which we have been reporting on in a
series of articles this week. No decision has been rendered by the referee in the Bar Trial as of yet.
UPDATE: Thompson writes in to say that he mailed today's motion prior to the Florida Supreme Court's order and that, in any event, he is entitled to make an oral argument on the matter.

Music to my ears.
Note: Caps Lock was intentionally left on.
But once we get there, what will we do then?
Depending on who his cellmates are, he may end up going down on something more than a martyr.
Too bad it only applies to the Florida Supreme Court, and not any sub-courts... Oh well. It's a start. ;)
@mogbert
"This pretty much shows the court doesn’t feel he is a qualified counsel. If he is not qulaified, how can they keep him on the bar?"
Because it's not up to the Florida Supreme Court. Disbarment is handled by the Bar, not the court. They are, however, allowed to be quoted as an "authority" when it comes to determining if he is qualified to be a lawyer.
"That means, about 2:30 PM, you can expect him to file a Rehearing Motion, stating that he can file it because this sanction wasn’t finalized yet."
He can file it. It's a "final chance" to state his case. However, they are free to reject the motion (see the determined catch), which would finalize the order...
Actually, in Jack's (and all other) disciplinary proceedings, the Florida Bar prosecutes. Judge Tunis makes a recommendation in her Report. The Florida Supremes either accept or reject her recommendation and stamps their approval or disapproval. So, the binding sanction actually eminates from the Supremes.
I suppose. The disbarment is essentially the Bar suing JT for "breach of contract" (breach of the rules he agreed to abide to when he got his license).
So the judges do have authority to "rule in favour of" the plaintiff (the Bar)...
I'm not certain even a law school student would want to go down this road, think about it. How'd you like your first impression on the local circuit judges AND the florida bar to be "figurative" threats on the same florida bar? (sprinkled liberally of course, with gay porn and references to JT as jesus)
Overruled!! Sit down, Mr Thompson! And please stop sending me naked pictures of your boyfriend.
http://jaablog.jaablaw.com/2008/03/20/supreme-court-sick-of-jack-thompso...
I'd like John Bruce to get comment privileges for this one topic as I'd like to know how the hell this is possibly "good news".
""And by the way, Jackdon'tknowjack, you stated in a post at Gamepolitics.com that I contact victims after school shootings. I never do that. I am going to find out who you are and sue you for that."
Oh ho ho, better watch out Jackdon'tknowjack! A guy who can't file anything to the court is going to sue you! What's next? He's going to shoot you with an unloaded gun?
Ah, Jack, you're too good. In a community so fractured and divided, only you could bring us all together, side by side.
And Thompson, if you’re reading this, here’s a song recommendation for you that I think will fit nicely to what you’re experiencing these days:
Celldweller - Welcome to the End "
- Here's another song that would be fit for that
"Beginning of The End" by Spineshank. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C39MzhiRhhM
Lyrics (Which describe the situation EXACTLY from Thompson's view): http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/spineshank/selfdestructivepattern.html#...
Jt has got an offical 'STFU' from florida, theyre as annoyed as we are, this can only mean good things for us and bad things for ole JT
How can he represent people in Florida when any case could potentially go before the Supreme Court of the state, and he'd have to bow out and get another lawyer?
Right?
I can hardly wait.
"I’m assuming he sent out a press release to all known media to make sure everyone knows about this.
Right?"
And likely claim that this is what he wanted and the Florida Bar has shot themselves in the foot.
When you're delusional, you'll never bored.
So, yeah, no surprise here really.
This story has made my day just a little bit brighter. We all know Jack will not go down quietly, even with the sanctions against him. He will continue to submit filing after filing until he is held in contempt. He will then scream his First Amendment Rights are being violated.
And when that happens all of us will throw our heads back and have a good hearty laugh.
Possibly the best play on that quote I've heard yet. Beautiful, just beautiful.
ohh...
I can see Thompson at the Clerk of the Courts office:
*waving fingers back and forth* I'm not the lawyer you think I am, I'm not the lawyer you think I am
Clerk: Sorry Mr. Thompson, I'm not accepting that
JT: !#$%!%!#
na na na na
heey hey hey
goodbye!
No?
Didn't think so...
It's as if he wants to get disbarred.
That's exactly what I was singing when I saw that.
Jack Thompson wins this case...wait what? He lost?
YES! Thank you, ohh thank you American Court system! Thank you guy who prosecuted against JT...And thank you gay porno for giving JT his "dirty" thoughts...
This could be VERY interesting.
P"ick.
@Rey
I find that to be an exceedingly appropriate song to sing right now
Classic. Beautiful. I can't wait to see him flail impotently at this one.
'Nuff said. :P

The system works. I'm so pleased. Setting aside his agenda, the one thing I've never liked about the guy is he's a bully. Seemed to feel like the legal system was his own personal implement to bludgeon people with who don't share his belief. Maybe I'm not a lawyer, but I read that to basically say the legal version of "We warned you. SHUT UP."
The system works!
Didn't see that coming! Ha!!! ;) :D
You know the more that Jack is losing the better he thinks he is doing. Just for once I'd like Jack to realize, "Oh hell, I'm boned."
I think most, if not all people learn at some point in their lives that sometimes there are things that should not be said. Conversations where things said too hastily in anger or frustration cause the loss of friendship, respect, or even have repercussions on one's professional life. Things we say that we wish we could take back and this time, think before saying. That's in the spur of the moment however. This man rattled off his letters, "media alerts", "responses", motions, etc. without a single thought as to whether what he was saying was a good idea or not, and it has cost him dearly.
Abraham Lincoln was said to have wrote letters in anger. Mean, spiteful an insulting letters, but he never sent them. As he wrote, he mulled over his words and ultimately decided against sending them, perhaps instead, having "exorcised" the angry words and getting them out, he was able to reflect without the initial anger and compose more suitable messages. If only Jack had picked this historical figure to compare himself to (as opposed to Paul Revere, Jesus, Batman, Martin Luther King, etc.), he may not have ended up in his current pitiful state.
I would LOVE to hear how the idiot in Miami thinks this is a good thing. He probably thinks it's "proof" of a "widespread conspiracy against him". Shiny side out, JT.
I tip my hat to the Florida Bar Association, and here's hoping they will go all the way and disbar this embarrassment of a human being.
And there was MUCH rejoicing! Best news ever! :)
My kingdom for an edit function GP!
Can we see the email JT sent out in response please ??
We should keep base camp anyways, because JT could use other venues to be heard.
And JT says the ruling is both 'Good news' and 'idiotic'? Buwha? I wonder if he means he's been an idiot and the ruling was good news for folks who want a bit of decorum from the legal institutions of our great state and nation. Or maybe JT just had a few too many Rum & Cokes after the ruling. Thats completely possible too.
I doubt it because she's got a long list of honors and is part of a good firm, but you never know.
I sure hope so.
Court orders and filings are part of public record, but public record cannot be used as a cause for slander/libel. So, uncouth individuals that happen to have a J.D. and practice in a particular state can file defamatory and potentially libel/ slanderous statements all day long and not get busted for it. I would argue that use of the courts in this manner is another violation of the Bar's code of ethics, and also grounds for a contempt of court charge. Just a thought.
What happens then depends on his reality distortion field. He will either feel as if everyone in the world is holding him dear in their heart, or he will possibly lash out at a world that has rejected him, likely in a long and rambling press release.
Note: I purposefully didn't name any relations in this post.
And Thompson, if you're reading this, here's a song recommendation for you that I think will fit nicely to what you're experiencing these days:
Celldweller - Welcome to the End
This is EXACTLY what Jack Thompson wanted!! Now the florida bar is his to destroy!!!
This is exactly the good news jack was looking for.
Meanwhile, on planet Earth, the rest us raise our glasses to the Florida Bar.
Handcuff time.
This is a beautiful day....*cry*....
I think that's what he's aiming for, if he can't win, then he'll go down a 'martyr' to the evils of the gaming industry in his own eyes.
But yes it won't be so hard. Some lawyers don't care much about the case, just getting paid for it.
The hope here by the Court is that by getting a real lawyer to sign off on filings, it will dramatically reduce the volume and clean up the language of the filings.
This can only be a good thing.
I feel sorry for the poor court clerks who had to wade through his bile.
Nicely put :D
This might be one small step to devastate JT, yet it's a step never the less.
Sooner or later, he will lose more, and the day will come when we all can celebrate his disbarment.
I'm wondering if his wife will "risk" her career for her beloved looney husband.
Honestly I'm quite surprised that she hasn't ditched him already...
HALLELUJAH!
"In sanctioning Thompson, we are requiring him to retain qualified counsel so that his arguments might be properly presented through the appropriate procedures in the appropriate forum."
This pretty much shows the court doesn't feel he is a qualified counsel. If he is not qulaified, how can they keep him on the bar?
Now for the scary part:
"NOT FINAL UNTIL TIME EXPIRES TO FILE REHEARING MOTION, AND IF FILED, DETERMINED."
That means, about 2:30 PM, you can expect him to file a Rehearing Motion, stating that he can file it because this sanction wasn't finalized yet.
I do like how when he claimed they couldn't forbid him access to the court system, they showed in almost a pages worth of cases where they, and the Supreme Court, have ahd to do this, showing that yes, they can restrict it, it isn't preventing him from seeking justice, just requiring him to stop wasting their time.
Jack'll have to search the pyschiatric wards of Jackson Memorial to find an attorney who'll sign one of those "picture books" at any price.
I LOLed @ your comment :D
Sure it feels like mind of JT is so far out there, so we just can't grasp it ;)
Anyways, cheers mate!
2:30? Could be in the Clerk's office already.
you forgot "Entire population of world wide web" because they are out to get JT!!!!!!
That gives him enough time to file at least 5 motions
With that in mind Jack will UNDOUBTEDLY file regardless of this motion. Simply because of the above. He will be hit with contempt and Jack will see this as another victory within his own little conspiracy argument.
Jack, I'm going to just break this to you... There is no conspiracy. You're simply wrong. The super majority of the legal system has ruled everything you've come up with as wrong. All of the bills you tried to get into law and when they were made law were struck down by judges quoting the first ammendment of the United States Constitution.
It's a free country friend. You're welcome to continue your efforts within your hate filled JT land, but the rest of the world's patience has run out, the kid gloves are off, and your ranting and making other's lives miserable when they are those you're supposed to respect will no longer be tolerated.
Happy first day of SPRING! ^_^
Even if they care more about money, the order still says that it's a FLORIDA BAR MEMBER who has to sign. After insulting every member and the bar itself for years, I doubt he'd be able to find anyone who will accept to sign everything from him.
To advert Monty Python, "...'tis but a scratch..."
Watch out! He will try to bleed on you!
Mr. Kent should be able to clear up the chances of JT having someone else file for him. Maybe he'll post to clear up the confusion.
Please jackie do us one little favor and file a refutal of your sanction. Go on you know you want to, they are laughing at and conspiring against you. Hell they must be in league with game companies and were paid to Rockstar and T2 to unmine you and your crusade. Going to call holy fire down on them too?
Odds are there are probably more Jack Thompsons of the world that will gladly take up a case for him if its to help defend the children from video games not intended for their age.
Until that happens I'm going to listen to "We Are the Champions" all day long. :D
I'm going with zero.
If he gets another lawyer to file for him it will destroy his conspiracy agenda.
I'm going with zero too. JT's pretty well known, I can't see anyone wanting to risk their careers (or sanity) dealing with him.
Plus he'd probably insist on Pro-Bono, seeing as how he hates handing out money (see the Junkin article about how JT thought a 10% cut for co-counsel was "outrageous").
Best he might get is a law-student, working the Pro Bono track, at most they'd give him one chance before getting tired of his constant nagging and harassment...
How about his wife?
Just the Florida Supreme Court. But give him time. He'll work his way around to the others.
Ah, thanks. And you're probably right about the other courts!
Someone should probably explain to him that the difference is, when Paul Revere was screaming drunkenly about an invading threat, that threat actually existed.
Sounds like just the Florida Supreme Court, where his disbarment cases are currently in "review".
So he could presumably still flood the lower courts, and he could still file federally (although he has insisted he will, the last time he did the court denied him and said to let the Florida court finish first...)
And he can't file outside his jurisdiction without some other lawyer, or getting Pro Hac Vice (and I'm sure they wouldn't grant it if he was in the middle of a disbarment hearing...)
Either it'll be his wife signing off on his crap, or no one else unless he's paying. Even then, it's unlikely.
The man is a legal joke in his home state. No one would hitch their wagon to his. Even if they had an ulterior motive, his ego would be too much to deal with.
I have the good fortune to be married to a wonderful woman who is willing to support me, but who isn't afraid to call me out when I'm wrong. I was thinking about her this morning, and about what kind of woman is married to Jack Thompson, and how this affects her life.
Maybe she doesn't pay as much attention. Maybe she really believes in him and is pushing him on. Maybe she is telling him to stop, to try to save a sinking ship. Maybe he's been trying to hide all this from her, which, while unlikely, screams sitcom to me. Like I said, I know she's an attorney, and that's about it. It was just a thought I had this morning.
JT: OBJECTION!
Judge: Overruled
JT: OBJECTION!
Judge: Overruled
JT: OBJECTION!
Judge: Overruled
JT: WELL YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT I SAY TO THAT!? *turns around and drops drawers and starts smacking bottom at the judge* KISS IT!
Just like:
pie > cake, but were getting off topic now.
Pie only > then cake when cake = lie.
@ JDKJ
Love is love. For real love you wouldn't give your wife up for $1,000,000,000. The problem with buying another wife is the good ones aren't for sale.
Cheers mates!
Mind you, I'm saving my bottle of fine Irish Whiskey for his disbarment announcement.
-----------------------------------------------
Knowing him he already has attorneys lined up. Can't stop looking like a fool just because some "court" says he can't file any longer... Knowwhaddamean?
Jack = Epic Phail
I'm going to stick with the averages and keep to my zero with his wife in mind when it comes to filing.
She's kept out of JT's business throughout all of his shinanagans and I don't see why that would change now. I'd be more inclined to believe that he'd get a buddy from church to help him out more than his wife. Not to mention she has a lucrative law career. How can she be the bread winner if she takes time away to file stuff for JT pro bono?
I'm just messing. I ain't giving ol' girl for nothing. Besides, in our house, she's the one with the $1,000,00 a year income.
Just messing.
I 100% agree.
Leave JT's fam out of his mess he's created. His wife is a lawyer so asking, "Would she file for him?" is obiviously a legitimate professional question, but let's keep it at that folks. I know I'd hate to be pulled into this just because I was related to the guy.
Quite true. You have a point there.
Well let's hope we can watch him crash and burn soon enough.
Oh wait, he is already crashed and burning as we speak.
Someone bring some petrols quick!!!
I don't really know anything about her either, but I imagine her a saint.
