Daily Show Lampoons Congressional Second Life Hearing

April 8, 2008 -
Last week, GamePolitics reported on a congressional subcommittee's visit to Second Life.

Last night, on The Daily Show, host Jon Stewart had some fun with the subcommittee hearing video as the assembled U.S. representatives tried to sound knowledgeable about the wonders and/or horrors of virtual worlds.

Stewart, of course, had some funny lines:
Virtual world hearings! It's official. Congress has given up on the actual world...

Look, nobody doubts that terrorists use the Internet. But I don't think that Osama bin Laden is in the basement of his mom's cave, creating jihad-friendly Second Life avatars...

Comments

And let the searching of YouTube for the video commence...

Hahaha, awesome! xD

Stewart's my hero. That's all there is to be said.

Though Ebonheart had some nice things to say, go check that post out.

"Look, nobody doubts that terrorists use the Internet. But I don’t think that Osama bin Laden is in the basement of his mom’s cave, creating jihad-friendly Second Life avatars…"

Dude, is his mom even still alive?

*falls over* Hah. That was awesome. "Jihad-Friendly Second Life Avatars" is gunna be my new phrase of the day.

all this time I wondered why I had to settle for "glitteracticacookie2"

Bin laden in Second Life...

This sort of explains those penis attacks that happened on the MMO some time ago...

Amen to that! If only, if only kicking bin Laden's butt was as easy as sending a couple 100 level orcs into an al Queda base! I still like that Penny Arcade episode at the Pokemon tournament last year.
"Dialga, the Coalition Forces choose you!"

John Stewart for President FTW.

BTW, Second Life blows. I always have to say it. It is one of my missions as a game artist to point that out every single time I read about it.

Yay Stewart!

I wonder if the other shoe will drop (presumably/hopefully on Colbert.) Well played, Stewart.

The best part of last night's show (4/7/2008) was the "Your Moment of Zen", in which Rep. Jane Harman states says (sorry, don't have it on my DVR) that the chairman actually called the hearing because he can't get past Level 7 in World of Warcraft, but he should know that as chairman the hearing is only worth 2 experience points.

Between this Zen-moment and Jon Stewart's quote of, "Virtual world hearings! It's official, Congress hasn't given up on the actual world!" Oh, and his rags on Second Life :).

"i love me some ta-ta's."
"fish ta-ta's."

(or something like that)

So, um Congress can we waste my tax money on something useful, like cancer research, or maybe AIDS research? Hell let's spend it on something really useless like fix SOCIAL SECURITY, or maybe even hell I don't know; improving the school system?

Ebonheart, that would make sense and would be logical. The Feds are never either.

*cough*Bridge To Nowhere*cough*

Dolphin women do indeed exist in SL, as do minotaurs... and crazy protesters, for that matter. A pity that they rendered and animated all that in another program, though. If they had done it on SL in a publicly accessible area, they could have encountered so many other horrors.

@ Axia

True, true. Whats to bet that in the future congress sesstions will solely be on "Who sux more Alliance or Horde?"

"Avatar Heroes"? Really? You people are suckers for fonts."

I loved this episode...but the Olympic torch part was a hell of a lot better...

@Ebonheart
There are actually several cures to cancer out there. I have seen one of them save the life of a stage four cancer patient... it is some sort of an extract from the fins of sharks...

I don't know if the others are real or fakes but one is illegal to research worldwide and all mentions of it are supressed... even though it has been found to defeat incurable cancers in the brains of animals without harming the animals... and apparently only sites like the one below even mention the studies... one guess as to what this drug is...
http://cannabisculture.com/news/cancer

the government even opposed(and still does) cervical cancer vaccines cause it would make girls have sex more or some other idiotic reason... Apparently saving lives is a lot less important than keeping our kids(and every adult) from the horrors of enjoying themselves or making children in the first place without the threat of death...

So them focusing on non-real world instead of the real world is much more important, because they at least don't have enough time to screw over the population...

The thing is though... Jihadies do actually get into these social networks and MMOGs to recruit and spread ideas and beliefs and even plans.

It's a way to communicate to cells.

@shady8x

I knew there where some cures out there, and of course the feds would block them thanks to special intrest groups owning politics. Theres always more more in treating the symtms than treating the cause. Business is life itself (please tell me I got the Umbrella qoute right)

@Cypher
Wouldn't Skype be a little easier and more private to use?

glalacticcookiekitty is pretty hot despite how ridiculous the whole committee is. They need to come up with better things to do then this crap

Andrew EisenIf you find Biddle's statement off-putting, then you're certainly directing your distaste at the correct entity.10/19/2014 - 3:18pm
