Report: Green Party Presidential Candidate Blames School Shootings on Video Games

April 14, 2008
According to blog site The Fhiz, a Green Party candidate for president has linked violent video games and television programs to school shootings.

The unconfirmed news comes by way of a blog entry detailing an appearance by candidate Jesse Johnson (left) at the annual convention of the Green Party of New Jersey (GPNJ) on March 29th. From The Fhiz's report:
The convention itself was pretty boring... After going over minutes and proposals, one of the Green Party’s presidential candidates, Jesse Johnson... spoke. While I give the guy credit for being able to deliver a speech... his impassioned talk of his accomplishments in environmentalism in native West Virginia and outline for new efficient energy production... failed to impress.

...At least he had a Q&A session afterward. At least, that would have meant something if he didn’t utterly blow it. When asked about violence and funding in relation to urban schools, he very obviously dodged the question, taking the Jack Thompson road of blaming television and video games for school shootings (try parents?) and flat out admitting he didn’t know anything about how schools were funded in NJ.

Comments

I actually find myself agreeing to a large extent with parts of the Green platform. Their party, though, I've never really been able to get behind - most Green politicians strike me as democrats, only they're also crazy hippies.
I've been leaning more libertarian myself - I think they're a bit extreme in some of their stances, but they aren't crazy the way greens and neocons are.
Another day. Another misinformed person...
I never heard of him before. Who is he?

again and again
@The_Peacemaker:

WTF? Speak for yourself.

But when was the last Green Party candidate that ever got elected?

Thought so.
Jack Thompson likes green because it's the color of money
This candidate went down very fast!

"During the 90's Jesse was called home three times, first to be the primary care-giver for his grandmother and great great aunt, both of whom had terminal cancer, then for two one hundred year floods within 18 months, which destroyed his Sissonville home and finally because his mother became ill and fell into a coma. "

Two, hundred year floods?! Is this guy Darth Sidious in disguise? Talk about engrish!
"Discouraged with the two party system, and an environmentalist at heart, Jesse began attending Mountain Party meetings a little over a year ago. At the May 3rd convention he lead the charge to keep Nader off the ballot and secured the party nomination for governor. He is the first gubernatorial candidate in the history of the state to secure his place on the general election ballot before the primary election. "

Does not sound like an honest guy compared to Nader. Sounds like a potential dictator in action. Not something one should be proud of if they are upset with the two party system.

"Build a film industry to create jobs, increase tourism, and educate citizens"

Can you say Properganda! Sounds like something that would come out of the book 1984.

"Smaller classrooms and limits on busing "
Okay kids, you better get use to walking 2 miles in the snow to get to school! Same for you old geezers.=] Classroom sizes should depend on what the teacher wants, since they probably know better.

"Every citizen must become a steward of our democratic ideal."
Sounds suditly like; "follow me or die!"

"The world's leader is too powerful to be this flawed without it negatively impacting us all. I know where the weapons of mass destruction are; we have them. I know where the ruthless oil companies are; we harbor them. I know where the mercenary armies are; we employ them. And I know where the environmental terrorists are; we purchase half our energy from them."

I thought Eco- terrorists were for the environment? I'm not sure if Saudi Arabi can qualify as a terrorist group but I think they might be what he is referring to. The guy thinks all mercenary "armies" are evil? Some are but not all are bad.

"Instead of rebuilding an obsolete machine let's build a movement."
So does he want to change the entire system?! Dangerous I say.
To me this guys is a real nut case, who is potential even more dangerous then Bush, Hillary, and McCaine
Will people stop kissing Jack Thompson's ass already?! It's pointless because his career is over.

Only 1 more week until the ruling comes out, it can't come soon enough.
Hahaha!!

The Green Party??

Those hippies talk about violent videogames??

Seriously though to all you dumbarsed environmental politicians play the game and then judge till then go back to your luddite, pot smoking, tree hugging, sissy hybrid car driving lives.
Bloggers, start your flamethrowers...
And this is part of the reason why the Green Party will never recognized as a legitimate politcal party. Thank god at least this time Nader isn't involved in this election. He did enough damage in the last two.
Again.

toll: You know posting useless words like this are just going to get your posts deleted.  If you have something useful to add please feel free. Otherwise, well it'll just get deleted.
Nader's said he's running, just not as the Green candidate.
They probably should have talked about all of the electricity that is wasted on videogames, or something that is along their agenda(s).
For people outside the US, I thought I should add a little context to this story. While enviromentalism is admirable and not something to dismiss, the Green Party is pretty much a joke in this country. Nobody takes them seriously, unless they're one of the very small percentage of people actually a part of the Green Party. They merely get sympathy points for being a "third party."
one again, has this guy EVER played a Videogame????
@ sean

What day is that going down again? I want to make sure I have the champagne properly chilled.
On or before April 21.
hehehe. Green Party.
...This really makes me want to cut down the rainforest
If you click on the guy's profile it says one of the important subjects of his platform is advancing adult literacy. I will say it again so you can soak it in

He wants to advance adult literacy......

I don't know how others would react to this but I was struck retarded.

He wants to advance adult literacy in the United States of America. Well it is an admirable desire and an very important one...If he was running for president in 1808.

I don't know if this man represents the majority of minority party candidates and I sincerely hope not, but if by chance he does, well now I why we have a two party political system in the Good Ole' US of A.

It removes the people who are pants on head retarded and promotes...

Competency
Hey, the US Adult Literacy rate is only 99%. We need a canidate that will devote his time and taxpayer money to teach that other 1% how to read! ;)
If I was ever going to vote this party in the first place, they just lost mine
Green always has been my favorite color. Trevor Immelman\'s now, too.

I guess I\'m going really green!

Jack Thompson, Attorney and You\'re Not, Thank goodness
Ah don't worry he wont win. The last time a threed party canident won was the wigs way back when. They are no longer around. SO guaranteed he wont win. And dont worry about him getting much press ether. thried party canidants never get press
sounds like the Green Party nominee was smoking a little too much green.
He's nobody that's why he said that, he knows that he can get some face time on faux News if he says videogames are bad but I don't think 1 minute of screen time is going be enough to sell anyone on his believability.
@Jack Thompson
Well, well. Look who's back. I...
Hang on a minute, where the usual barrage of insults and condescending behaviour? And who the hell is Trevor Immelman?
I'm having trouble believing that's a real JT post... for one, why is he bringing Golf into this? And two, why does he feel the need to comment on an article that isn't about himself?

Oh wait, scratch that, his name is in the article as a comparative statement. I see.
Jack,

You and Jesse Johnson probably have a lot in common.

--Most people have no clue who either of you are.
--Both of you are completely irrelevant.
--Neither of you have a snowball's chance in hell of ever getting elected to public office.
Oh piss off Mr. Johnson.
hehehe. Jack Thompson.
YAY Jack's back!!! Oh how we missed you.
hehehe. Disbarment.
Heya Jackie boy, takin some time out from wrecking your own legal career?
Let's see the Green Party can't even get on the ballot in the majority of States so their candidate has how much chance of being elected?
freaking hippies...

Get off the grass!!!!!

Don't you know that weed is responsible for all the worlds problems???

No, its true, a commercial on TV told me it was...
The Green Party is still around?
hehehe. Hippies.
@ Wyvern and gameman9

Trevor Immelman won the Masters golf tournament yesterday. The Champion receives a green sportscoat jacket as a reward(along with the prize money).

Hence, Thompson's stupid joke.
@Jack Thompson, soon to be ex-Attorney

How convenient for you eh?
Dennis, could you help Johnny Brucie fix whatever problem is causing his browser to display slash marks (\) before quote marks in his post? It's obvious he's not technically savvy enough to do it himself.

Of course it does help us identify genuine posts by the guy...
At least this moron was kind enough to expand his stupid statement to target tv as well.

As for adult literacy, He may think there's a difference between being able to read & actually being literate, perhaps he wants to get the majority of people to realise that it's "a lot" rather than "alot" & perhaps correct the idiotic way that americans pronounce "aluminium"...
Remember the movie Red Dawn?

The Green Party was elected in and the world went to heck more so in the movie than real life :p

So moral...

Vote for the Green Party, you would be invaded by the Commies and have to defend yourselves in the mountains and caves....
Another misinformed nobody who uses videogames as a scapegoat for youth violence. Same crap as usual. Oh, well. His chances of winning the Presidential election is incredibly low, anyway. I never even heard of the guy.
I can't say anything for the American Green Party, but in NZL the Greens are big enough. Granted they're only a minor party but they usually get enough votes ( at least 5%) each election. Hell I voted for them last time, and will probably vote for them this year despite that shitty Anti-Smacking Bill they got in. Meh, I guess I should be thankful games aren't much of a political issue here, we have enough distractions as it is.

And no... the fact that green is my favourite colour has no part to play in my politics.

*laughs at the reactions given to Jack's post*

Amusing troll is amusing.
@StealthKnight

He sounds potentially dangerous but if nothing else he'd be different, variety is supposed to be the spice of life, personally I prefer pepper.
@IHM:

Well ignoring him doesn't work, facing him head on and calling him out doesn't work, so option 3 = laughing at the trainwreck that he calls a 'successful career' :P
*headdesk*
*headdesk*
*headdesk*

*CRACK!*
Medic!
Ha Ha! Another one joins the bandwagon, oy!
God, even the Greenies are onto Video Games now?

I think I just died a little bit inside
Hi everyone. I wrote the aforementioned article and I have a few responses. For one, anyone who goes out and calls Green Party members a bunch of pot smoking hippies simply needs to grow up and actually read something about the parties platform. Had to "pants on head retarded" bloggers actually read the rest of the article, I provided links to that very information.

Second, candidate Johnson is dead wrong in his idea that video games are serial killer factories. And personally, I advocate taking the crosshairs off of games and putting them on all of the really terrible parents we have in this country. But as fun as slinging insults like chimps sling poop is, we need to focus not on just flaming the crap out of said offends, but on educating them as to why they are wrong, why Jack Tompson is an asshat, and why jumping on the Fox News friendly bandwagon does not mean you are intelligent or informed. Or sane. Reacting the way you do to such people is only going to get more firepower stacked against you.
[...] A few weeks ago, an article I wrote about the New Jersey Green Party Convention was quoted on Game Politics:http://gamepolitics.com/2008/04/14/report-green-party-presidential-candidate-blames-school-shootings-on-video-games/ [...]

JDKJ: But cheer up, Austin. If the unemployment rate continues to double-digit as predicted for the next few years, your half-dozen stands a better than likely chance of returning to power.

JDKJ: @DS: If he had added the line about "or hiring illegals aliens under the table to work as nannies," it would have been a completely perfect descripition. And, yes, it's about the same difference between a six and a half-dozen.

DarkSaber: My god, that description makes them sound almost Republican. Still what did you expect, Obama is only marginally more left than republicans.

Austin_Lewis: Health insurance, brought to you by the same kind of bureacrats who couldn't, in timely fashion, investigate the comments of any of the men Obama appointed Czars. Or their past. Or their history of not paying taxes.
Posted 11/08/09 at 01:06am
Austin_Lewis: Yes, and what a piece of crap it was. Arresting and fining people just because they don't make a personal choice to buy healh insurance, creating over a hundred new bureacracies, and worse.

JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.
