GP on MN Public Radio Today... Globe & Mail Has Live Chat with Grand Theft Childhood Authors

May 1, 2008 -
Along with DePaul University game design professor Robin Burke, I'll be discussing Grand Theft Auto IV on Minnesota Public Radio's Midmorning with Kerri Miller today. The show airs at 10:00 AM Central.

Meanwhile, Drs. Cheryl Olson and Lawrence Kutner, the authors of Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Video Games, will appear on a live chat with the Globe & Mail at 12:00 PM Eastern.

*sigh* why did the first woman they interview have to preface her reasons why she doesn't like GTA by saying "I'd rather be hiking". And then goes off on a tirade about how it doesn't make sense that games DON'T make little violent zombie children.

Good luck.

Yeah, Good Luck. :D

Hey, can any GPer's who live in that area make an mp3 of it?

- Warren Lewis

Cecil (and everyone else who's wondering): Anyone can stream MN PR from their website. Click on the link "Midmorning with Kerri Miller" provided above in the article and you'll see "News: Listen" in blue on the top right of the page. That'll stream the show from anywhere the intertubes reach. Now anyone who can save streaming audio can keep it!

Oh, and the Current stream is our public alternative radio station. I rarely listen to it since I have a Zune in my car, but as far as radio goes, they'll play everything from Indian music to Rap to Nine Inch Nails. Pretty good for variety, which is something radio usually lacks.

Can we get a transcript or audio file for this? :(

I would if I could, but they neutered our Windows Media Player here at work, and about all we can do is listen....and I don't think they know I can do that yet. :D

On the main site there's an MP3 stream as well as a WMP stream, so I'm sure someone around here should be able to record it.

Also, for those listening, you can submit questions to the show that they might consider for use on air. Once 10:06CST rolls around maybe some of you could submit some intelligent questions to the debate?

Wow, appearing on Midmorning today? Sweet. I listen to the program pretty much every day so I look forward to hearing you on there.

I can listen, if I can figure out how to record I might upload the file.

Also, I predict that HE will call in at some point.

Good Luck Dennis,kick ass!

heh, I like Ms. Miller because she usually asks pertinent questions, but this first guy doesn't seem to be able to respond well to "what new virtual grounds does it achieve"? He mentions some generic stuff along with "larger arena", which we know isn't right.

@myrpok:

Yeah, Ms. Miller actually seems like she's relatively unbiased here. She's asking good questions and seems genuinely interested in learning more about the game and it's appeal, rather than coming in with guns blazing and spouting complete lies.

It's very refreshing! :D

Well, I guess I was wrong.

Thankfully.

I thought it was interesting that she didn't even know who Thompson is. I guess it goes to show that despite how (im)famous he is amongst gamers and lawyers, he's a relative nobody to the world at large.

Thanks for listening in, everyone!

...and, who was the smartass who sent in the JT question? ...LOL

Dennis- have you heard MN public radio before? I may be biased as a local here, but were you thrown off a little by Ms. Miller's completely unassuming questions? I'm always impressed by how moderate she is during interviews, even when the two sides are completely opposite of each other.

I just trumped your little side show: I\'m on National Public Radio, nationally today, at 2:40 pm, and on the Glenn Beck Show tonight at 7 and 9. Jack Thompson

I'm a MN resident and listen to MPR almost exclusively in my car to and from work. While generally they have a (very) slight liberal slant to their news and reporting, they are easily one of the most unbiased news outlets I've been able to find.

Unfortunatly, I was unable to listen to the show as I arrive at work at 10:00 and am unable to listen on the job, but I'll be listening when I get home tonight.

For anyone who needs it, MPR has a great web presence and you can find their website at www.mpr.org. You should be able to download or stream any of the recent programs and a lot of their stuff is archived as well.

For what it's worth, I think Keri Miller does a pretty decent job and dosen't usually try to dig deeper than the guests are willing to go.

I'd like to hear from GP about how the experience went, how the show came about, and what contact you've had from MPR prior to the experience.

I'll take my question off the air ;-)

@Jack Thompson

You were on the radio show for like three minute,s and I bet the Alabama court system would love to know you keep saying you're still on the case

I am surprised that no one mentioned the edutainment genre in regards to the question about the possible future of games.

I will have to admit, that since I am working on an edutainment game, that I see it as a huge part of what is to come. So much potential is there that has not even come close to being tapped.

As it stands now, no one has been able to guess at what subject I am tackling based on the genre of game it is: sandbox MMO RPG god-game with a little bit of planetary sim thrown in. Servers would be an entire galaxy, and everyone would start out having there own "M class" planet. Oh ya, and tests would be boss battles: the bigger the test, the bigger the boss (finals would require a 'raid' group consisting of the entire class).

Most people I have spoken to have said that it would be impossible to present any subject in that manner and keep it a valid edutainment game. If only they knew . . . he he he.

Wow, Mr. Thompson, you sure were quick to brag on some next-to-no-name blog about such biased and un-listened-to news sources.

Michael ChandraSo really the guy's own words strike me as "wah! How dare you disagree with me!" behaviour, which is the sort of childish attitude I am unfortunately not surprised by.10/20/2014 - 2:17pm
Michael ChandraCorrect AE, but then again the owner's own words are about "wishes", not about an order. No "we told him not to", but going against his wishes.10/20/2014 - 2:16pm

Andrew EisenMichael Chandra - Unless I overlooked it, we haven't seen how the directive to not talk about whatever he wasn't supposed to talk about was phrased so it’s hard to say if it could have been misconstrued as a suggestion or not.10/20/2014 - 12:35pm
Andrew EisenHey, the second to last link is the relevant one! He actually did say "let them suffer." Although, he didn't say it to the other person he was bickering with.10/20/2014 - 12:29pm
