GTA IV Banned in UAE

May 3, 2008 -
The United Arab Emirates has banned Grand Theft Auto IV, according to a report in The National.

Some gamers, however, have found a way around the loophole by purchasing the game from the duty-free shop at Dubai Airport. The Abu Dhabi airport, however was not stocking the game.

The ban is not surprising, given that past GTA games have been banned in the UAE. And, as GamePolitics recently reported, Sony's popular God of War has been banned as well.

Bastards dont deserve to play our games.

oh great! now were bastard?
man youre quite deep in thought are you?

@rosetear

Ignore what he has to say. Those of us who don't jump to conclusions sincerely appreciate your input on the subject. Especially considering a lot of us have never actually been in the UAE.

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to address the issue.

Wow, thanks for all the nice comments guys

'Bastards dont deserve to play our games.'

'Who gives a damn about those people? They encourage violence on women and on the west. Screw them.'

'It’s the UAE. Who gives a shit?'

Yeah, so what, you guys don't have the slightest fucking clue about the UAE obviously. Granted, I'm not a national of the country, but honestly, we're more civilized than you are. Easily. Sure, they're a little eccentric when it comes to some things (like video games in this instance) but we've all come to terms with that. It's not like we don't have them, and if the UAE police ever saw me walking down the street with a copy of GTAIV they wouldn't go out of their way to arrest me. It's just what they do to enforce their religious beliefs and whatnot. Again, thanks for the hate an all; I'm glad you fuckers are so happy about yourselves - It's not like we can't even buy it here anyway. Go into any videogame store and they'll sell it to you, they just won't show it on the racks or anything.

Rant over, so please be more considerate when offending other people - especially as a whole, we're all individuals

I duno y gta 4 is banned in uae. it only has shooting and maybe a little bad content :P i think gta is only banned in uae. its a great game! i got it although i live in uae. its banned everywhere here accept one place i got it from. its such a good game. i dnt understand y its banned in uae. if people want to get it, its their choice cuz its one of the best games ever!

The Emirates have way bigger issues than banning video games. But then again, its what the topic is.

lol, GTA IV might be banned here, but it is easier to find it in the stores here than in most other countries where the game is sold out right now. I walked into 5 different game-shops, and they all had GTA IV in stock - both US and EU version!

And wow, I'm surprised by the ignorance of many people here... Read up on UAE, or take out a map and learn the difference between Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. They might be in the same region, but so is USA and Cuba... And i read that Cuba just legalized computers... That must mean they're still illegal in the US?

Keep in mind there isn't a single strip club in UAE. Their goverment doesn't want them to get funny ideas.

@ negative comments about UAE & Middle East. Seriously - The above negative posts, really show how educated you are about 1) UAE and 2) the region "Middle East".
Get educated before posting non-sense comments - keep in mind the News or media as a whole is not a good source. If that were the case then I would have to believe that the US would 'have' be the unsafest place on earth considering all the murders and psycho's running about - but clearly in reality it's not as bad as the news/media portrays it.

Also keep in mind that every country has it's own traditions/culture, etc, one may disagree with certain aspects - but critisizing and calling names just shows the lack of respect and understanding. Now no matter how hypocritical or illogical a country's political agenda may be - and yes every country has - including the so-called 'free' countries. The authorities here in the UAE have their reasons for banning the game - although currently still unclear to me why have they have done so - and yes to me it is illogical.

They also banned GTA III here, needless to say that both GTA III/IV are still widely available and on display in Abu Dhabi, the capital.

@ Fletch

If there are no set restrictions on the timing of action movies here in the UAE as compared to other countries, please don't jump to a conclusion and state that they 'love violence' here.

You're a journalist - do your job! - correctly!

hi , i live in shehab world andi heard about uae alot in the internet and on tv and itsvery nice country and its not like other middle east countries ,

fuck u ignorant narrow minded bastards who talk shit bout the UAE im white im christian and im canadian and i live in the UAE and i have to say just cuz the country banned a game doesnt mean they are fucked up. The game is known to have shit in it that is not promoted in islam (drinking, Drugs, sex, violence) and the country wants to ban it because its against the countries morals, but theres tonnes of other censory porn sites are blocked, scenes are cut out in movies,tv etc so i dont see why ppl are so fucking surprised its been banned. i got my copy the day it came out in some small game shop and i have plenty of friends who are muslim who have it aswell and local friends who have it. its not a matter of whether they like the game or not its just if they allowed it they would be going against what they base the country on, the game promotes the things they are trying to keep out of the country. and if u dont live in the UAE then fuck off outa this forum cuz u dont kno shit. the UAE ia by far the most liberal muslim country in the middle east, they got clubs and bars everywhere and its one of the richest countries in the world so they must be doing something right

UAE IS FILLED WITH TERRIORISTS ANS SUICIDE BOMBERS

I agree with the guy ontop of me

I AGREE TO LOL!! HAHHAHAHA

why did they bann this???? i was waitin to get this and pop they bann it all of a sudden

Yes, we're all terrorists and suicide bombers, and we're going to get you :P

lol

@ Matt; only 'the National' printed the article - it's a new newspaper - just about anything to get attention.
Nothing of the ban mentioned in any of the other major newspapers. As previously commented, the game is still widely available.

I totally agree with my Canadian friend above, who's done a wise thing by moving over here!

We're living a great life, yes we have to respect some censorship for the normal, polite and organised Muslim population, who don't believe in terrorism or acts of extremism. Muslim religion teaches peace and friendship.

As for most of the comments above which I am sure are from Citizens of the US! believe me, we live in a far more pleasant world than you do right now. We have freedom to earn tax free, we get to socialise with cultures and people from all over the world with really interesting varied backgrounds and oppinions, we don't have a Warmonger for a President, and we're part of a country which is building up to something great. You guys are all hanging in there thinking you've got the best lives, well believe me you don't! I've spent many months in the U.S and I love the place! But it isn't the only place on earth. Get those maps out, figure out where the UAE is, and then do some research into all the great things going on here. It'll make you feel quite depressed with your normal lives and rising unemployment alongside your economic slump! But heh, I guess more unemployment means more time to play GTA IV!! So you'll all be happy anyway.

Why not try understanding the world instead of just talking trash about things you are ignorant to?

Kudos to Christian Brit! ;)

well... if people in the UAE cant buy it from the stores.they can from the Net like amazon.com
and btw GTAIV is the best game i have ever played.God of war too

This country filled with anti-GTA muslims and a extremely retarded Minister Of Information is a fucking joke! GTA IV shouldnt be banned in there because I reside over there (Im christian, guys and not emirate). But, my friends knows a place where to find the game and they will offer it for me at my B-day! :D! Ha ha! Suck my fury balls, Minister of information of the uae!

Re:

Fuck canada. Sorry couldnt resist.

Re:

hello  I am american working in Duabi , alot of your assumptions about the country are totally off the wall dont beleive everything the media says about the u.a.e. and the middle east i've been working in the middle east for the apst 5years and i would have to say beside Iraq and some other places the middle east is pretty chill. especialy in U.A.E AND KUWAIT I can only speak for those country which i been. the crime rate is way low, drugs are a minor issue here in this part of the orld almost all the expats are employed and making good money here. but there are some liberates and freedoms that haven reach here, one would be the freedom of speech, but others such as freedom of religion are excised here. Dubai i would say is the future for the middle east so you would see changes in dubai before any other country in the middle east,. So before getting all ignorant American do some research and know what you are talking about before you make a ignornant comment about something you make yourself look like a ass.

Damn, i have been to

Damn, i have been to hundreds of places, where can i get my hands on GTA 4. I live in dubai, i have tried emirates mall, bur dubai - but still no luck. :(

Neo_DrKefkaI believe the problem #GamerGate has with Sam Biddle is he is apart of this blogging group that in a way hates or detests its readers. Also being apart of the crowd that claims its on the right side of history isn't helping when he is advocating bullying10/19/2014 - 7:45pm
MechaTama31Of course, I'm looking at these tweets in isolation, I don't know a thing about the guy.10/19/2014 - 7:06pm
