North Carolina Killer: I Played GTA Before Double Murder

May 14, 2008 -

A 22-year-old convicted killer claims that he played Grand Theft Auto just before murdering two housemates in 2005.

As reported by the Fayetteville Observer, James Christopher Stitt is waiting to learn whether he will be executed or face life in prison for the gruesome double slaying. Stitt told a psychiatrist that he played GTA until 4 a.m. and then committed the killings. The psychiatrist, Dr. Moira Artigues, testified:

He went in and killed George and Jenna in a state where he was like an automaton, not in control of his actions at the time.

The newspaper report notes:

[Dr.] Artigues... did not suggest that there was a connection between the video game and the murders.... Artigues said Stitt seems at times to live in a fantasy world and she wasn’t even sure that the version of the murders he described to her was the truth. He told a different story — in which Grand Theft Auto wasn’t mentioned — to his girlfriend, according to earlier testimony.

Courtroom testimony also revealed that the convicted murderer had an extremely troubled childhood.

JT and I agree, posting since the format change sucks...

But you are posting on a public forum and asking people to contact you...

Contact Jack Thompson for more information at 305-666-4366 or amendmentone@comcast.net.

Also, the case you mention has an awful lot more going on than a simple crusade against something you don't like. Parents were actually encouraging their kids to go ahead and torment another kid, there is nothing right about that. Now I don't actually believe that they can all be held fully responsible for the actual death of the girl, because suicide was that girls choice, just like Devon Moore chose to steal a car and then shoot 3 people. But they are alot more culpable than Rockstar ever has been in a tragic event.

Oh for the love of... why can't i find the freaking edit function? Geez, i feel like an idiot here.

Re: North Carolina Killer: I Played GTA Before Double Murder

Are you registered? The register link is towards the top right of the site. The edit link (it's not a button at all, we were lied to! I call conspiracy!!! Where's the 60 Minutes camera?) is in the footer of your posts when you're registered.

Re: North Carolina Killer: I Played GTA Before Double Murder

Guys... it may do nothing more than play to his 'You're only talking and/or not talking to me because you're afraid of me' bullcrap, but seriously, if my last post above was any indication, just don't e-mail him at all. It isn't worth your time. He thinks EVERY e-mail is just there to annoy him. I sent him this huge e-mail, and i shit you not, that was the entirety of his reply, right down to the puncuation marks.

It doesn't matter whether you're a gamer or not, whether you read any game blogs or not,  how old you are, where you went to school, or what your job is, through John Bruce Thompson's turd-tinted glasses, everyone is a nothing more than a pimple-faced 13-year-old druggie on the fast track to pulling a Columbine. It's that simple. He's too far down the path of insanity, denial, and generally being a senile old fool to even be worth your time writing out even the most flattering or agreeable e-mail.

I realise that last paragraph looks a bit harsh, but i'm merely saying it through experience, seeing his escapades over the past year, and the e-mail i sent him just took the cake.

Re: North Carolina Killer: I Played GTA Before Double Murder

Anyone sends me an email the result of which is to annoy me, I will hunt you down and prosecute you. Think you\\\'re anonymous? Think again in light of the below. I already have one subpoena now before the court. Anybody want to be the target of another? Then don\\\'t email me. If you do, Dennis McCauley will be getting a subpoena, and guess what, subpoenas work:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted a Missouri woman for her alleged role in perpetrating a MySpace online hoax on a 13-year-old neighbor girl who committed suicide.
Lori Drew of suburban St. Louis was charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress on the girl.

Drew allegedly helped create a false-identity MySpace account to contact Megan Meier, who thought she was chatting with a 16-year-old boy named \\\"Josh Evans.\\\"

Megan hanged herself at home in October 2006 after receiving cruel messages, including one stating the world would be better off without her.

Drew has denied creating the account and sending messages to Megan.

MySpace, a social networking site, is based in Beverly Hills. The indictment noted that computer servers are located in Los Angeles County.

Due to juvenile privacy rules, the indictment refers to the girl as M.T.M., the U.S. attorney\\\'s office said.

The conspiracy count carries a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. Each count of accessing protected computers carries a maximum possible penalty of five years in prison.

Last month, 19-year-old Ashley Grills, an employee of Drew, told ABC\\\'s \\\"Good Morning America\\\" she created the false MySpace profile, but said Drew wrote some of the messages to Megan.

Grills also claimed Drew suggested talking to Megan via the Internet to find out what Megan was saying about her daughter, who was a former friend.

Grills also said she wrote the message to Megan about the world being a better place without her. The message was supposed to end the online relationship with \\\"Josh\\\" because Grills felt the joke had gone too far.

\\\"I was trying to get her angry so she would leave him alone and I could get rid of the whole MySpace,\\\" Grills told the morning show.

Megan\\\'s death was investigated by Missouri authorities, but no state charges were filed.

Re: North Carolina Killer: I Played GTA Before Double Murder

He's trying to threaten a subpeona... Really? Jack, you posted your details "anonomously" and in a public forum. You've got to expect a good deal of pornography and viagra spams. While I do personally think that  any e-mail sent to you would be a wonderful waste of time, I think it would be better if all you did was to set up a simple spam filtering rule.

Good Luck!

Let me guess Jack, you still hasn't learned from your LiveJournal days?  I am not going to mention the fact that if you post your personal info online(i.e. phone, email, etc) and harass people, then you have NO right to bitch about being "annoyed"...  Nor the fact that you are abusing "anonymous"-izing services again.

And that is the best example you can find?  What a laugh if you think that case is going to get you anywhere.... If I remember correctly both the FBI & police are fed up and ignoring such "baaaaaaaaaawwwwww, I'm being annoyed for harassing people on the interwebs & in real life" BS from you.

How is it that this old man is a better troll than most other people?

His stuff continues to be hilarious and completely off-topic.

Jack approves of lesser penalties for murderers!

You heard it here!  Jack Thompson approves of lesser penalties for those convicted of murder as long as they played a video game in their life.  Congrats, Jack!  You continue to look like a douchebag in this "victory" of yours.

(Note: I actually understand the facts of the case because my reading comprehension skills are well above Jack's.  The above was sarcasm.)

Re: Jack approves of lesser penalties for murderers!

he also thinks he's god. At least that's how I take the phrase "...so help me god" since when taking an oath in court, the baliff says "...so help you god"

Your nuts

Your a psychopath if you don't play and enjoy Grand Theft Auto IV. Cheers to capping friends in the face online

A rhetorical question

You have two buses.

One bus is filled with murders, rapists, and other violent criminals of Stitt's variety - their offenses are egregious and their guilt certain.

The other bus contains Strauss Zelnick and the development team responsible for GTA IV.

One bus will be locked away, its inhabitants never to be seen again. Which bus would you rather keep around?

Because JT's argument seems to be that it's okay to murder as long as you played GTA - the video games made you do it.

Effects

What about miss "Iris"? What if she was a mother of  lets say two? Best buy was the job she needed to support her family. She never gets another job like it. They fall into poverty. When they get older they turn to crime. One of our friends, family, and/or love ones happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time ,cross paths with one of theses people. They get robbed, or shot in a robbery. Get in a crash trying to get away from a robbery. Gets raped by one of theses people. Or God knows what. Because a lawyer, a LAWYER, insted of trying to keep people like this off the streets inadvertently caused someone to become a criminal. Because he has some kind of vendetta againest one game. Think about it. It could happen.  P.S. I'm not spineless. It just was a spur of the moment thing. J.T. just pisses me off sometimes.

Jury Given the choice

The article points out that the Jury was given the choice between life in prison or the death penalty. A unanimous decision was required to impose the death penalty. Out of 12 people it is far from a stretch to think that at least 1 of those people would be opposed to the death penalty, on any number of grounds. So the fact that he got the "minimum" sentence cannot soley be attributed to any sort of "videogame" defense. In this case, it isn't even a consideration since according to Mr. Woolverton the video game aspect wasn't written into the defense.

I would be willing to bet that somewhere around half of the jurors were for the death penalty with the others being opposed. You know, like real life where the truth generally lay somewhere in the middle.

That can't really be JT that posted about the video game defense "working" can it? The article announcing the conviction didn't even say a single word about games...

You DO realize who you're

You DO realize who you're talking about, right?

Just to note

Since Mr. Thompson is already giving out press releases let me just remind that, from the original article:

Artigues, who met with Stitt in December and January, did not suggest that there was a connection between the video game and the murders.

In her testimony Tuesday, Artigues said Stitt seems at times to live in a fantasy world and she wasn’t even sure that the version of the murders he described to her was the truth. He told a different story — in which Grand Theft Auto wasn’t mentioned — to his girlfriend, according to earlier testimony.

IMMEDIATE NEWS RELEASE – MAY 15, 2008

VIDEO GAME DEFENSE HELPS SAVE NORTH CAROLINA KILLER FROM DEATH PENALTY

Today a North Carolina jury today sentenced a 22-year-old murderer to life in prison rather than imposing the death penalty. http://www.fayobserver.com/article?id=294067

Part of Stitt’s defense was his obsessive play of the Grand Theft Auto video games, and it worked. It was put before the jury in a very clever fashion, and it worked:
http://news.spong.com/article/15391/Murderer_Tries_GTA_Mitigation_to_Avo...

Miami attorney and anti-video game activist was on CBS’ 60 Minutes three years ago asserting that this particular game franchise, Grand Theft Auto, has figured in many other murders, including the deaths of three Alabama policemen. See this 60 Minutes story with Thompson at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/03/04/60minutes/main678261.shtml

Thompson was right then, and the sentence in North Carolina proves it. Increasingly, the criminal defense bar will be using the “video game defense” because of the video game industry’s aggressive and illicit marketing of adult games to minors.

Contact Jack Thompson for more information at 305-666-4366 or amendmentone@comcast.net.

It's a bull**** defense. He

It's a bull**** defense. He had a troubled childhood as well, and I love how it's being ignored by you, or any other anti-video game activist (or zealot).

Thank you, Mr. Thompson, for

Thank you, Mr. Thompson, for giving criminals a scapegoat to be let back into society, free to murder even more people.

I hope you're happy.

Well, guess what, children?

Well, guess what, children? Stitt got the minimum sentence--life without parole, and was spared the death penalty. The video game defense worked. Love it.

Jack Thompson

Even though you're a lawyer,

Even though you're a lawyer, and I previously thought that reading skills were necessary for that, let me quote the above post.

Just got off the phone with Paul Woolverton (the writer of the Observer article)

Mr. Stitt got life in prison. GTA was only mentioned and not built into the defense. By the date of the murders it was San Andreas or earlier but Mr. Woolverton didn't know which game it was exactly or which system he played or if he played other violent games.

From speaking with Mr. Woolverton, Mr. Stitt had a troubled past. Having his first sexual encounter at age 9. His mother made him steal for her. He was very possessive of people and hated the woman that he murdered. The knife was a steel knife (in reference to a comment earlier about a plastice knife). The handle, from what I understand, was what broke off the knife, not the knife itself that broke.

There was no video game defense Mr. Thompson.  I challenge you to point out a video game defense.  What they were going for looks like a mental instability plea.

Re: Even though you're a lawyer,

What they were going for looks like a mental instability plea.

I would think Jack already realized that, seeing as how he is an expert in such matters....

For some reason he likes to

For some reason he likes to do stings with rockstar's games, as if it's somehow their fault that a random Best Buy employee isn't following the ESRB.

Best Buy says it'll enforce the policy, so yeah, they are in the wrong and reprimanding the employee may well be necessary. But JT, dude, seriously, lighten up. This doesn't do anything but show that one person at Best Buy made a mistake, and you're making it sound like it's a signal of the second coming of Christ, who will with a wave of his hands reduce all Best Buys to rubble and build churches or something over them. You're welcome to whine to the manager, but the last FTC statistics show that the ESRB has better enforcement than MPAA and RIAA ratings - so this probably isn't a deep conspiracy to let Best Buy skirt the ratings enforcement process.

Sent an e-mail to JT. Expected civility, and was disappointed, though not surprised. I tried to show his reply, but got spam-flagged.

Substitute?

I actually just sent him something as well. Not five minutes later, all i got in return was this:

"First of all, I'm not the least bit interested in what a derelict gamer has to say about anything.  Do your homework.

Secondly, there are multiple posts because of McCauley's idiotic verification system which keeps indicating, falsely, rejection of posts that have been made.  That's his problem, not mine.  There are complaints by others about it.  I am surprised you can't read.  Don't bother me further. Get a life."

He will never stop. He will never listen to ANYONE. I kept telling myself it'd be a waste of time to talk to him in any form or fashion, but i did it anyway, and look where it got me.

I suggest to everyone here: just don't e-mail him. Ever. He will never, EVER, give anything more of a response to you than this. Don't waste your time, or his. He has 'more important' things to do.

Re: Substitute?

I loled at Jack's last bit(he is so full of irony and hypocrisy), but at least I checked to see if my posts went through and not just kept spamming them.

MaskedPixelanteOK, so my brief research looking at GameFAQs forums (protip, don't do that if you wish to keep your sanity intact.), the 3DS doesn't have the power to run anything more powerful than the NES/GBC/GG AND run the 3DS system in the background.07/28/2014 - 11:01am
ZenMatthew, the 3DS already has GBA games in the form of the ambassador tittles. And I an just as curious about them not releasing them on there like they did the NES ones. I do like them on the Wii U as well, but seems weird. And where are the N64 games?07/28/2014 - 10:40am
james_fudgeNo. They already cut the price. Unless they release a new version that has a higher price point.07/28/2014 - 10:19am

Matthew WilsonI am sure the 3ds im more then powerful enough to emulate a GBA game.07/28/2014 - 9:54am
Sleaker@IanC - while the processor is effectively the same or very similar, the issue is how they setup the peripheral hardware. It would probably require creating some kind of emulation for the 3DS to handle interfacing with the audio and input methods for GBA07/28/2014 - 9:30am

E. Zachary KnightSleaker, the DS has a built in GBA chipset in the system. That is why it played GBA games. The GBA had a seperate chipset for GB and GBColor games. The DS did not have that GB/GBC chipset and that is why the DS could not play GB and GBC games.07/28/2014 - 7:25am
IanCI dont think Nintendo ever gave reason why GBA games a reason why GBA games aren't on the 3DS eshop. The 3DS uses chips that are backwards compatable with the GBA ob GBA processor, after all.07/28/2014 - 6:46am
