Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

May 17, 2008 -

Recently, GamePolitics reported on efforts by Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) to regulate Second Life over concerns about "toilet sex" and other adult content.

Rep. Kirk's efforts have not gone unnoticed by Second Life satirist General JC Christian, who pens an open letter to the Congressman:

I imagine that with the strength of the economy, our rising standard of living, the Floridization of our climate, and the success we're experiencing in Iraq and Afghanistan, it must be very tough to be a congressman these days. There just aren't a lot of pressing problems left to address. I mean you can't vote for torture and domestic spying every day.

That's why I'm glad you're putting so much effort into solving the problem of toilet sex in Second Life... I spend a lot of time on SL, but it never occurred to me that toilet sex even occurred there. So imagine my surprise when I discovered a monument to toilet sex, the Larry Craig Center, not more than 50 meters from my SL GOP Headquarters...

GP: In case you can't place the name, Larry Craig is the Republican Senator from Idaho who was arrested last year for soliciting sex in an airport men's room.

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

Question. What was Senator Kirk's response to the letter?

I am a lost soul, condemned to haunt the dreams of John Bruce "Jack" Thompson until his crusade against video games ends. Someone, please! End my suffering!

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

First off this new website is great   Now on to the story.... I am speechless of how awesome this letter is. There are far wosre things out there than what is happening in Second Life or any video game out there...

Father Time,No we can't

Father Time,

No we can't simply because it is convienient.

However, it would be nice if they tried to focus on actual problems or tried to do a bit of research on the thing they are talking about.

Re:No we can't

I'm saying we shouoldn't argue it because it's a FLAWED argument. It's a red herring fallacy, they can and probably are working on all of those problems.

Saying they should do some damn research and know what they're talking about before enacting legislation is a different argument though and one we should point out often.

Fallacies

Here's a list of fallacies for further reference:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fallacies (If this is a broken link, please notify me and I will fix it.) Oh, and I think we should change Ad hominin to "The Jack Thompson arguement"

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

I'm sick of the argument 'don't you guys have something better to do like fix the economy?'. It's a fallacious argument (forget the name but it's a fallacy of relevance).

I'm sure the senators are working on those other problems too, they'll probably have a bunch of meetings on the housing market and whatnot then have a meeting on second life then move onto something else.

Can we please move away from 'there's bigger issues out there' argument.

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

ANY issue is bigger!  If politicians are spending ANY time on video games that's time they could be spending doing something more useful.

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

Well, we can't move away from that argument because... even if they ARE working hard on fixing the economy, solving all our other problems... they waste time by announcing crap like this.  Show us what they're doing to fix the economy instead of what they're doing about "Toilet Sex" in Second Life.  Seriously, is that really something to focus on?

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

Well, he would know all about toilet sex. *rimshot*

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

The congressman will have to take a wide stance on this one if he wants to get anywhere. Or he could ignore the open letter, and be scorned and hummilated in public. I hope he is not an incumbant other wise it will be hard to get him voted out of office.

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

The congressman will have to take a wide stance...

Isn't that what got Larry Craig in trouble?

But seriously, any politician who is heard saying that games are to blame for any of societies ills should be removed from their position ASAP. Because the person is obviously not trying to find the real reasons for the problems that plague the people they're suppose to represent. Congressman Kirk should be booted out for focusing on nothing.

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

I wonder if Rep. Mark Kirk ever got a lumpkin on SL.  Kinky bahstahd.

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

I'm just afraid that they won't realize that this is a facetious letter.

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

I stopped trying to play second life when I accidently made my character bald and couldn't fix it. I hate mmos that require the player to have knowledge of programming to play. Just trying to download it is bad enough. Which is why I stuck to Runescape for so long.

Re: Congressman's Second Life Concerns Lampooned

Toilet sex? Kinky. Good to know there's room in second life for everyone, even for porcelain fetishists

A moment to sigh

Now this is getting sadder..I have been with SecondLife since 2005 (Don't ask how one keeps their sanity in that realm for this long) And their community and admins are top notch. The moment an under ager is discovered, the account is banned, and usually an IP ban will follow.  Even the private 'sims' or islands as they are called, are run by the toughest of people, anything to hint at someone under 18, or 21, depending on the region, is banned and reported to the company for investigation.  And most there, like myself, have little tolerance for the level of stupidity that only a teen could come up with, and quick to ban/report.  This is getting way out of control, the goverment needs to stop blaiming video games, online realms, or the media for things that happen.  It comes down to the parent to regulate what their child does.  For some cases in point: My sisters, and I, all played video games since the age of 3 or 2.  My sisters (2 of them) Both in their 3rd year of university along with myself.  None of us were ever violent, or gun happy, even when introduced to a gun from my father around the age of 7. Why? We were taught what was right/wrong, and had a proper upbringing..Sorry to diverge from the main point.  SecondLife is not some evil sex filled place, just a massive mall..and the teen grid exists for a reason, jeez.
