ECA Announces Support for Local Chapters

ECA Announces Support for Local Chapters

May 23, 2008

The Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA) announced yesterday that is now has 40 local chapters. The ECA, of course, is the non-profit organization that represents video gamers.

From the press release:

These newly formed networks give consumers the opportunity to connect with like-minded gamers in their area. Participation is open to activities like ECA-sponsored LAN parties, fund-raisers and contests in addition to attending local events, conferences and shows.

ECA chapters are forming now in local gaming communities and college campuses all across the country. They adopt the collective goal of educating the community on political issues that directly affect the interactive entertainment industry and broadening the ECAs mission to give gamers a voice.

ECA chapter relations manager Thomas Valentino added:

With over 40 ECA chapters already formed and many more on the way, were incredibly encouraged by the number of gamers that have taken the initiative and embraced our vision. In the coming months, we plan to coordinate group advocacy efforts that continue to preserve our rights as gamers.

The ECA also announced that it had assumed management of the National Association for the Protection of Video Games (NAPVG), a Facebook group for politically-minded gamers.

Full Disclosure Dept: The ECA is the parent company of GamePolitics

Re: ECA Announces Support for Local Chapters

Was wondering how long it would take for this story to show up. I've been a pretty big skeptic as far as the ECA goes, still am; but I actually can't criticize this. If there were a colorado chapter, I'd seriously consider getting behind it.

Re: ECA Announces Support for Local Chapters

@ Jadedcritic. We normally have an internal policy which prohibits ECA staffers from posting on our consumer-facing sites, GP included. But given the subject matter, we thought it appropriate that I address any questions you may have directly. At present, we do not yet have a Colorado chapter set up. If you are interested in founding one yourself, please let me know and I’ll pass you over the related documents. The only requirement for consideration is that all chapter members must be ECA members in good standing. Otherwise, I’ll keep your interest in joining in a file for when one is started, and then pass it along to the founding president.

Best regards,

Thomas

Re: ECA Announces Support for Local Chapters

As far as the ECA goes, I've considered joining, but I can't bring myself to take the step because of the complete anti-legslative stance it takes. While noble as much as JT's motivations were, I can't put myself behind a group that just won't compromise or take a look at every possibility.

That said, congratulations ECA. Good Luck!

Re: ECA Announces Support for Local Chapters

How is it a non profit  why does it cost $19.99 per year to be apart of it then? If you go to registor they require a credit card and say "Make your voice heard today by joining the ECA for only $19.99 per year. If you are a college student or in the military you will be eligible for 25% off the original cost of $19.99 which would equal $14.99, just use your .edu or .mil email address when registering." so doesn't that mean they are chraging people to be apart of it and thus are a chraging people for a proffit?

Re: ECA Announces Support for Local Chapters

Non-profit organizations have operating costs as well. I'm not familiar with how they are set up but I'm sure they have some paid employees and need supplies to stay in operation.

Re: ECA Announces Support for Local Chapters

Registered non-profits do indeed have operating costs, and do have to abide by legal restrictions on how the money they collect via membership or donations can be used.

If anyone is interested in setting up a chapter in Austin, shoot me a message- cjovalle@ischool.utexas.edu.

ZippyDSMlee: Dark Sovereign: you DO realize there were roving shanty towns and poor hosues before social secuty was started? they were hives for poverty and disease, hell with todays "cleanliness" in housing code you can not have them anymore and states will just forc

ZippyDSMlee: Dark Sovereign: noobies and their silly definition ^_~, but I ahve to ask how do you keep millions off the streets, taking twice as much money from states without social security and health care?
Posted 08/29/08 at 10:22am
Dark Sovereign: You ASSUME that not giving tons of handouts to people will make them poor. America itself shows you are wrong.
