California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

May 30, 2008 -

Note to self: Give Stockton, California a wide berth. The townsfolk there have apparently turned violent, thanks to Grand Theft Auto IV.

At least, that's the impression given by a report in the Stockton Record. Running under the headline Grand Theft Auto IV Criticized by Stocktonians, the story cites interviews with just two people and gives the clear impression that GTA has adversely affected their lives.

Parent Greg Within told the paper:

My son Peter was never really aggressive, but once he got into video games, 'GTA' being one of them, he started to push, hit, talk back, and just become a different person.

A GTA player blamed his bad behavior on the game as well:

Mark Wellis, 19, said he was involved in an altercation a week after he purchased "Grand Theft Auto IV." At the time he noticed that he had become less sensitive to violence. Wellis doesn't completely blame the game for his violence, but it did affect him.

Did it ever occur to anyone that stupid mindless games attract stupid mindless people?

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

ahhh sorry, I actually wasn't familiar with that one. Does El Diablo have especially pleasant bowels? I'm not sure I'd want a house there...

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

GRAND THEFT AUTO. SATAN'S GAME. YOUR CHILDREN, LIKE IT OR NOT...

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

Don't keep us in suspense, we're dying to hear the rest of an all caps rant!

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

It's from an old Dungeons and Dragons joke. "Dungeons and Dragons, Satan's game. Your children, like it or not, are attracted in their weaker years to the occult, and a game like DnD fuels their imagination and makes them feel special while drawing them deeper and deeper into the bowels of El Diablo." "This afternoon the dead alewives watch tower invites you to sit in on an actual gaming session. Observe the previously unobservable as a hidden camera takes you to the inner sanctum of Dungeons and Dragons." Then there's audio of stereotypical gamers nerding it up, going on about cheetos and trying to get laid in game.

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

Speaking of Diablo, great game.

Corey: The kid probably reached his adolescent stage and started acting out like most kids that age do.

Exactly my first thought reading the excerpt.

"Little billy never used to be aggressive unil he began growing 3 centimetres a day, getting facial hair & going through drastic hormonal changes that radically alter behaviour. All of that was caused by GTA4!"

I love the way that the end of the article mentions the removal of the GTA4 ads in portland & chicago as if there was some form of causal relationship rather than them acting out of fear of a thompson initiated DOS attack on their faxes.

Interesting that "Peter" played games other than GTA, good thing that the 360 version of GTA4 has the "Influenced childrens behaviour" achievement so the cause of the influence is irrefutable. Is Peter 17? If not, why was dad not noticing the things on the case where it describes the content & thinking "Hmm, not sure he's ready for this yet" or sitting with his son whilst he was enjoying the new game, just to see what all the fuss was about? Also, gotta love dad's name: Greg Within, it's like "Intel Inside"

It is slightly encouraging to see Wellis mention that the game did not incite the altercation but he ruins it by immediately saying it affected his behaviour as if it was the only thing that did.

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

Maybe they could start marketing GTA IV as hormone replacement therapy, given it appears to help children mature into adolescence so quickly.

Hmmm . . . I think I'm going to write that down . . .

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

Grab your pitchforks! We'll teach these video games not to mess with our lives!

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

Hey you xbox, we don't take kindly to yer type round here!

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

I can imagine an xbox hanging by its controller on the edge of town, with a sign reading... 'This is wut hapens too Vidja gaemz in our town!', maybe with a dictionary and a similar sign nearby.

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

wait till they start console lynchings and hangings.

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

A friend of my became more aggressive when he stopped playing video games, and started hanging out with other friends. Now he yells at his parents, rarely at home, smokes, etc. OMG!!!111! Stop playing video games make you even more aggressive!!!

What I really think it is, is that these kids have a different social life. At 19, you are heading to college, and that is a huge leap. It is very socially different, and of course Mark is going to act different. I think Peter is going through the same thing. It's always social pressure, espiecially in High School and College.

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

So you think the 19 year old changed because of the pressures of growing up?

Cuz my explanation was "what a dumb-ass"

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

It's a little difficult to say on so little information, but yeah it's probably the social life.

Personally to me it just sounds like they're being a bit more assertive, and standing up for themselves a bit more.

This is all the proof we needed....

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

Look out! These crazed GTA players are out for out brains! My god what a bunch of morons. The kid probably reached his adolescent stage and started acting out like most kids that age do. The teenage years are tough parents, but don't blame them on games.

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

for "our" brains

Re: California Town Driven Mad by GTA IV

We all knew this was going to happen. And we don't even have to worry about You-Know-Who now.

Michael ChandraSo really the guy's own words strike me as "wah! How dare you disagree with me!" behaviour, which is the sort of childish attitude I am unfortunately not surprised by.10/20/2014 - 2:17pm
Michael ChandraCorrect AE, but then again the owner's own words are about "wishes", not about an order. No "we told him not to", but going against his wishes.10/20/2014 - 2:16pm
