Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

May 31, 2008

ParticipACTION is a Canadian nonprofit which encourages exercise and receives government support.

The organization has released a video suggesting that too much video game play and not enough exercise may lead to adverse health consequences.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

What was that? It is like saying that you will be 80 years old by playing video games.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Eh, they're been playing those for months up in the good ol' north. They pretty much attack everything if you look at all of the commercials. I wouldn't stress out about this too much, just the generic "if kids aren't getting excersize they'll DIE" complete with stereotypes.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

More like "Kids if you don't work you will get fat and your mom will die."

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

I can at least kinda somewhat understand the first part about an unhealthy heart, that's at least related to poor lifestyle and inactivity........but where the hell does your colon come into play??

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Four litres of Mountain Dew and Hot Pockets for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day give you what medical professionals are already referring to as 'gamer bowels'.

*above information may in fact be spurious.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Well, I don't know about colons, but 4 liters of mountain dew and hot pockets three meals a day is hell on your kidneys. You might wind up giving birth to sharp balls of pain.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

XD that was hilarious. I love the kid in the old people mobile.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

News flash: engaging in any activity that basically involves sitting on your ass and never excersizing has adverse effects on your health. This isn't rocket science, and it's also not any reason to point fingers specifically at video games, as the same can be said of watching too much TV, movies, or listening to music.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Or working a desk job. Since I started my current programming job a year and a half ago, I have gain 25 pounds. Not too fun. If I had more time, I would excersize, but a 40 minute each way commute and a faimily, it makes it a little difficult to get some in.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Amen...

Desk job should be targeting like a cause of obesity, and not just videogames. Society "rewards" you when you spent hours and hours attached to a PC or desk (even a wheel of a vehicle), not for being healty and athletic.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The cynical side of videogames (spanish only): http://thelostlevel.blogspot.com/

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

And sometimes, society DOES reward you for being healthy and athletic, despite being guilty of committing sexual assaults and getting juiced on steroids.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Indeed modern work doesn't help improve your health anymore than playing a lot of videogames. I am an avid gamer, but fortunatetly, I am also an avid sportfan. However, it is not gaming that keeps me from excersicing (since I usually only game on weekends or in conmmuting time) but work, because I usually leave office late (way past my "official" finishing time) and it's already too late to go to the gym (I am a TaeKwonDo black belt).

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Knight, I had the same problem when I went from working retail (and lifting 32" TVs multiple times daily) and starting as a 3D artist.  But I found ways around it.  Like does your office building have stairs?  On your breaks, try climbing some stairs.  Also get up and stretch once an hour to help avoid carpil tunnel.

It may not be a full on workout but it should be enough to get you in better shape.  Switching from an active career to cubicle dweller is tough.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Right now, stairs are the only way to get to my office. So I use them anytime I want to go in and out of the buildng. I also try to get up from my desk whenever possible.

I used to ride my bike to and from work when I worked closer to home, but now I am too far away for that. Not much work opportunities within biking distance now.

I probably could take a walk during lunch and my breaks. That could help some.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

I understand how you feel as I have had days like that and had that problem of getting myself to exercise when I was in Highschool. To depressing of an atmosphere, but in my junior year I would force myself to excersise in the gym but always felt weird when someone walked by. Anyway, the best way to6qet yourself to exercise is to litterlaly keep saying to you self, that you will do it and youneed to force yourself to gett yor body into position. Once you get started, it is a lot easier to to.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

There's also the option of buying a set of grip exercise springs. They're easy to carry, and they're good for exerting your free hand whil you're working. I found them especially invaluable at the office since I'm currently practicing Arnis, a martial art which puts a big premium on grip strength and wrist dexterity :)

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

The commercial exaggerates, but it is kinda true ... except for the fact that DDR and Wii Fit exist.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

You're kidding right? DDR and Wii Fit?  That's exercise?  You ever do any real exercise?  Like get your heart rate up to about 60%-80% of its maximum and keep it there for 30 minutes?  Come on!! You guys in programming jobs or sitting playing video games all day and the hardest thing you do is climb a set of stairs?  You like gadgets?  You like electronics?  Get a heart rate monitor and start running  and downloading your times and exercise load rate --- actually see if you are stressing yourself methodically -- scientifically.  Watch the weight come off.  One problem though --- it can be hard --- it can be real exericse.  DDR!!! Wii Fit HA!

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

There posts a person who has never played / seen DDR properly. Seriously, songs rated 7 or above (same goes for ITG) qualify as excercise for sure. And 10s and above (not to mention 11-13 in ITG) are just ridiculous. Have you ever seen people passing 10+s on a DDR machine? Do you know what they all have in common? Go on, guess.

DDR is an excellent way of building up stamina, endurance and power in the legs generally (arms too, depending on how you use the support bar). And it gives you rythym ).

Wii Fit, I can't comment on.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Oops, that's rhythm. Stupid words.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

DDR also builds good lower body coordination with the harder songs. Although, when you start out playing you're using more energy for each step than necessary. As you get more coordinated you learn how to play more efficiently and waste less energy for the tricky steps and turns. Even as an expert, though, it's still an intense workout.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Yeah dude, you've never seen people play the hard stuff on DDR.  MAX300 on hard is like two 45 second sprints with a three-second break in between.

WiiFit on the other hand, I can't speak for.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

That one isn't too bad. I think the one of the kids in the sauna is worse. Talking about how their friend died in his young teens, and how one should expect it. At least the one above is rather humourous considering how ridiculous the situation is.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Now that I watched the video, that was incredibly stupid.

Reminds me of some excersize commercial I saw a while back with a fat kid playing a game and he beats it and jumps up to dance a celebrate and about 10 seconds in he has to stop to catch his breath.

Great times.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Yeah, I'd say this one is right up there with it in terms of stupidity.

As for gamers being unfit, well, I'm on the elliptical 20 minutes a day, five days a week.  I also walk everywhere that isn't too far to drive (partly also to save on gas).  I eat fairly healthy.  Plus there's sex (hey, that's exercise too!)  So I'd say for a gamer I'm pretty fit.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

I didn't think it was a big deal...I think they just used video games to "be hip".  I didn't take it as an attack per se.  As others have said, the basic message is probably true, that its better to encourage physical activity in children, as health problems can result somewhere on down the line.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Ironically, the other Canadian acting living commercial "BodyBreak" advocates the Wii as a part of a fitness routine.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Not that ironic. The Wii gets your butt off the couch. Other console games don't.

BodyBreak used to be the only group that Participaction (a government entity) funded. But in the 90's they lost funding. Lately Participaction regained their funding, but hasn't re-hired Bodybreak. But Bodybreak has returned on it's own.

Here's the BodyBreak "Wii Sports" commercial:

-- If your wiimote goes snicker-snack, check your wrist-strap...

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

In other news, water is wet, the sky appears blue most of the time and eating a ppound of bacon and a box of doughnuts every day will make you fat.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Really its not that hard to get off your ass and exercise... although i do have a job that pays 240 a week for 20 hrs a week.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Get orf my lawn!

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

I now have brain cancer from watching this video.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Looks to me to be dealing more with inactivity than video games. The spot could have just as easily been about television itself. Not that big a deal.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Old people are awsome compared to the young idiots of today so I most certaily hope video games have that some sort of mystical power to age people.

Also its a stupid video.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Some of this is true. If you dont get enough exercise you wil eventualy get fat and have health problems. but this commercial is just over doing it.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?
Video games really have nothing to do with it, they're just something to do. What it comes down to is how lazy you are, that's it. If someone wants to go out and do something, then they will do it whether they play video games or not.

Besides, why isn't the finger being pointed at anything else? What about TV? Hell, what about someone who sits around all day reading? Yes, even reading can be blamed. No matter what it is, if you sit on your ass all day you're not going to be all that well down the road. Blaming just video games is nonsense.
Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Everything in moderation. Funny thing is, all the people who made this bizzare advertisement are sitting around all day making this stuff, and they will become unhealthy.

-GRIZZAM PRIME(c)is property of the U.S. Marine Corp. Wetworks Dept., and also The Incredible Hulk-GRIZZAM PRIME is not to be associated with GRIZZAM 512 or any other GRIZZAM entity under penalty of law, so sayith ZARATHOS.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?
I really hate ads like that, that advert was so condecending "I had to rescue my 13th damsel"?! If they can't get their info about games to a level above that of the 1980s then how can we trust any of that crap to be true? besides which, I do plenty of exercise
Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

There are more ads like this. I see the ever so often. They had to come up with an example, so they used video games. It's not really an attack towards video games.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

So this is one of the places our tax dollars are going to. If it's not bailing out countries, it's promoting bullshit like this.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

You kids and you Halos and you're Bioshocks. Back in my day we played pong, with one paddle, and no ball, and there was no keeping score, we just moved that paddle up and down and we were *damn happy* to be doing it!

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Well, at least I'll be mentally fit long into my old age, thank you video games!

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Well, that commercial didn't seem to be THAT bad IMO. I mean the whole message is pretty much promoting active kids, the whole game thing was more of a sideline factor.

Thats my take on it.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Its a bit stupid, however this is not the first of these comercials. In canada they have had these since I was kid (about 12 years ago) and well, they have always said the same thing. Get active and you will be healther. I guess if it gets a couple kids to go play outside it wont be that bad. But I think that a parent needs to throw there kids outside every now again just like my mom did :D

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

I was all ready with some vitriolic bile but the ad is kinda funny, its only attacking inactivity after all.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Yeah, I'll admit, I could use a bit more excercise myself.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

As part of my recovery from severe depression, the games have kept me sane & the self-discipline (at least partly learned from games) has helped me lose 100KG

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Congratulations! In case there was a misunderstanding, I was not suggesting that you were out of shape(after all, I don't even know you), I was merely admitting that the overall theme of these advertisements has merit, as I am a bit chubby. Luckily it's summertime and I can go out without freezing to death, so I will hopefully lose a little weight. Not to mention that I haven't really seen many good games coming out lately (at least none that I would consider good).

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

I have a far more cunning plan rather than going out into that horrible fresh air and vitamin providing sun, I'm buying an exercise bike to put in front of my 360. That way I can kill splicers/terrorists/covenant/random innocent pedestrians whilst getting fit. Thats the kind of thing that most ads would never think to suggest, it seems that advertising agencies can only see either end of the spectrum, I can only conclude that they're like a fish with eyes that can't really see straight in front of them.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

I agree that not having too much exercise can have adverse effects on our health. But other than too much game play? And what about too much TV watching or too much unhealthy snacks?

Obviously this is another one of those anti-game activists' propaganda.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Not really, rewatch the ad. They could have used anything; comics, tv, chaining up your children in the basement, masturbating...

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Yeah, I've rewatched the ad. Perhaps I might have overdone that "propaganda" part, but I still think that this advert should not solely blame video games for part of children's inactivity. What about TV, laziness or slacking off?

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

They should have a series of them (and may, not being in canada I don't see their tv) highlighting most everything that encourages inctivity

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

there is a series of these commercials in canada. i think they're pretty good. i love video games but really if u get obsessed and spend too much time doing them (the same goes for too much tv) and not enough exercise then u will be unhealthy.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

I had to agree with bustin. Though I might think that the advert should include a list of inactivity which causes obesity in kid, I still like how both of these kids play out in the commercial.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

No this ad is true, gaming makes you age way faster than normal.

Just look at Old Grandma Hardcore, she's actually in her early twenties! (oghc.blogspot.com)

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

Hehe I can imagine halo 3 voice chat: "I'll pwn j00 young whippersnapper"

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

I'm a Dance, Dance Revolutionary.  Those kids should be, too.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

It's funny how many comments here don't follow simple math ;

Play video game all day = Sit around all day = No excercise = Health problems.

My teenage years would've been healthier if I moved around more and played less Starcraft, haha!

And also ; age = relevant to inevitable health issues.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

When I first saw this,I thought it meant that you become a bitter person who criticizes the current generation and longs for your childhood.

Re: Too Much Gaming Makes You Old Before Your Time?

I'm all for freedom of ttnet vitamin speech and allowing rent a car game makers to put whatever they want in games, but there's one thing about this app that has me scratching my head.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but from araç kiralama the previous article araba kiralama on this I gathered that players can use Google maps in-game to find the other (real-life?) dealers in their area.  If this is the case, has travesti anyone considered what's stopping someone from using this app to actually move drugs between hands for reals?

But majority araba kiralama of their outrage araç kiralama stems from what it could DO TO children, not the content itself.  Talk to one of these people and you'll find they don't think any books kiralık araba should be banned from children.  Mention American Psycho and they talk about kiralık araç the redeeming value of using imagination to construct a story.  Reading, no matter what the content, is largely viewed as a consequenceless activity for people of any age.  The reason why I mention American Psycho is because of the content itself.  Gaming never has and likely never will have any scenes where someone has sex with a severed head.  Not gonna happen.  Yet despite this, they'll fight tooth and nail to protect their children from two boys kissing in Bully but whatever they read is harmless... yeah.

The entire arguement is kiralık oto based upon a social normality inflicted by luddites who can't figure out the controls for Halo so it's frightening and terrifying and obviously the cause of youth violence on the rise even though, in reality, it's in decline (which is actually a HUGE suprise given minibüs kiralama the economies status).  In  a perfect world, we would have parents that actually parent.  The idea of sales restrictions on media on oto kiralama any form to accomidate parental unwillingness to get involved with their child's life is the real problem to me.  Here I am, 32 years old, and being held up at a self-scan rent a car needing to show ID before I can buy a $10 M rated game all because Soccer Momthra can't be bothered to look at the crap Billy Genericallystupidson does in his free time.  It's too hard for her, so I have to suffer?
