Housekeeping Issues

June 4, 2008

You may have noticed that we had some slow access to GamePolitics at times last night. This was due to a traffic spike caused primarily by widespread coverage of the ESA's sharp criticism of GP. The tech gurus are still tweaking our new server setup and we should be able to accomodate peak traffic better, going forward.

By the way, I noticed that, in support of its position that we're biased, the ESA tossed Joystiq a link to GamePolitics posts carrying the ESA tag. However, only three recent posts came up. That's because "ESA" is a brand-new tag that I've added since we moved to our redesigned site a couple of weeks back. The old Wordpress format listed all tags in the sidebar, making it unwieldy to have too many. So, on the old site, ESA stories were tagged with the generic Video Game Industry/Economics tag which encompassed many non-ESA items.

Under the new format, I've been adding tags like crazy to bring a greater level of specifity to your tag searches. The upshot is that I retroactively tagged some ESA posts last night, but only made it back as far as April 17th (hey, the server was slow for me, too). I plan to complete the back-tagging process for all posts, whether they deal with ESA or not. This will make tag searches more productive for GamePolitics readers.

On a personal note, I will be traveling much of today, so probably will be AFK until late afternoon.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

a) Yeah, way to overreact. Also, way to define yourself as in direct opposition to your customers.

b) This whole deal has one advantage: It can be trotted out and held up anytime JT accuses GP of being an "game industry stooge" from now on.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

As if the ESA wasn't losing enough credibility as it was, they go and do this. Real brilliant on their part.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

Meh it's to be expected.  Gotta have growing pains when you're the "free press of Cuba".  I'm still LMAO at that one!  WOW!  Not even JT has taken shots like that.  I think ESA is a little... Hmmm...  Perturbed that you would question their Godliness.  Maybe they've been hanging out with the RIAA a little too much.  In any case, thanks for the updates and the usual GP goodness.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

I thought the problem was due to John Bruce. But this is better. When I got home from work yesterday, I saw links to the ESA story all over the place. It was then that I realized what the problem was.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

Holy crap, I thought JT was bad for temper tantrums.

But comparing GP to the Cuba Free Press? What is this, McCarthy Appreciation Day? That was low, and the ESA should be ashamed. They've officially Jack Thompson'd themselves (it's like Godwining, only more sad and pathetic, and usually completely random lashing out).

Sad that they really can't say anything to show they stand behind their decision to ask Perry to speak, so they just attack the messeger rather than the message.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

You know, Dan Hewitt really does need to be replaced.  People who would issue statements like that absolutely should not be Senior Director of Communications.  The ESA really can't afford more bad press.

Though, in my personal experience, the people who are in communication positions typically have poor communication skills in general.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

Also housekeeping/redesign related, the registration link doesn't work. I try to use it, it tells me further instructions will be emailed, but they aren't. It does however proceed to tell me that my user name is registered, and therefore I can't use it.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

Were you registered on the old site? If so, then your username/password from there will still work.

Check your spam folder in your email Gray, sometimes it ends up in there.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

I did check it, not in there. I never bothered registering on the old site, but it seemed useful to do so on the new version.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

Thanks for the info Dennis.  I had assumed the outages were due to our favorite future ex-lawyer DoS-ing the site.

Re: Housekeeping Issues

Sort of housekeeping related, redesign related...

For some reason the main page (none of the articles, just the main page) completely pegs my computer

Re: Housekeeping Issues

Don't be suprised, though, to see the traffic here spike tenfold from yesterday in light of JT's hearing.  I suspect the site will be near-unreachable after 2 PM.
