Jack Thompson is a hero.
At least, that's the word from America's Freedom Festival, an event taking place in Provo, Utah this week. As reported by the Deseret News:
America's Freedom Festival at Provo honored four individuals with 2008 Freedom Awards Wednesday night... The honorees... personified some or all of the festival's four traditional values of family, freedom, God and country...
A lawyer dedicated to protecting children from violence, obscenity and pornography in the media, Jack Thompson was honored especially for his defense and support of families.
Thompson... said that while his life has been filled with persecution and ridicule, he would go back and do it all over again, with even more fervor than before.
Now, Utah County, where the festival takes place, is an extremely conservative corner of the United States. So it is perhaps understandable that organizers there value Thompson's conservative Christian agenda. That's their call.
However, to consider Thompson only on his values crusade ignores a troubling list of negatives that stretches from Orem to Salt Lake City. Consider that this "American hero":
- has been recommended for a 10-year disbarment by the Florida Bar
- has been judged guilty of 27 ethical offenses by a Florida judge, who is sending her recommendation to the Florida Supreme Court
- the 27 offenses include things like: "Knowingly making a false statement", "Engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation" and " Engaging in conduct in connection with the practice of law that is prejudicial to the administration of justice"
- may no longer submit filings to the Florida Supreme Court, in part because he included porn pictures in a motion (and NOT in a pornography case)
- included gay porn pictures in a federal court filing (also not a pornography case)
- received a cautionary visit from the U.S. Marshals following a federal court filing in which he wrote "...enemy combatants at Guantanamo are to get more due process from federal judges than what I am to have. I guess my "mistake" was not killing 3000 people to make my point..."
- called for the impeachment of Utah's Republican Attorney General when the AG suggested that a video game bill written by Thompson would be unconstitutional
These items are strictly a matter of record, and do not include Thompson's strident cultural rhetoric (with which one may or may not agree) or his penchant for sheer vitriol. Moreover, Thompson himself has written that he expects to be disbarred by the Florida Supreme Court.
There seem to be two possibilities here. One is that the selection committee did not conduct due diligence on its nominee. The other is that they just didn't care. Perhaps the committee was aware of Thompson's issues but chose to believe that they are part of some vast cultural conspiracy against him waged by liberals, the video game industry, the Florida Bar, Florida Supreme Court, US District Court, gays, shock radio, the Republican Blank-Rome law firm, various judges, the Alabama Bar, etc.
But at some point the idea of a conspiracy that large becomes silly. What's happening to Thompson now is more like a judicial consensus on the man's behavior.
How did America's Freedom Festival fail to see that?
GP: We've made several attempts in recent weeks to get an explanation from the committee as to why Thompson was chosen for the award, but got little more than the fact that he was nominated and ultimately selected. That lack of openness is especially troubling in light of the fact Utah County's government is the sponsor of the award event (i.e. - the taxpayers footed the bill for this award).

Covering the festival would in no way relate to this site's two topics: games and politics. Sure, telling us about Thompson getting the award was prudent, as he affects games (theoretically at least). But what goes on at this festival is meaningless here.
Also, note the hypocrisy. He was just bitching about vitriolic comments directed at him while he insults you in an email he sent to two major television stations and gaming sites (A very pretentious move, by the way, why should CBS or CNN care about that?).

I hope everyone is enjoying today. Get out there have some brews, burgers and watch some fireworks. Then after everything is over enjoy some virtual "fireworks". (Which I will do this evening in Team Fortress 2). But during these festivities remember that freedom isn't free. There are those such as Thompson who would like nothing more than to have his with with the 1st Amendment. Be stalwart and know that those who hate American values, such as Jack, are out there and are more than ready to lie, cheat and steal to deny you your rights and try to turn this great land into a fascist nanny state.

Jesus did indeed say that the world would hate His followers because it first hated him, but the truth Jack is that the world hated Jesus because He told the Truth. He spoke of loving one's neighbor as one loved one's self. He said that the two greatest commandments were to love God and love others. While He did call the Pharisees and Saducees liars and vipers it was because they were self-righteous men. Men who did the very things you are doing. If the wiki link is true, you've got to wonder what our servicemen and women must think, if that part was broadcast, about Jack getting an award. Many, maybe most, of those serving in the armed forces are gamers. It's about all they have to do to blow off steam when they're deployed, so they do play a lot of games. It must really piss them off to see someone who wipes his ass with the Constitution getting a "freedom" award while they're giving their lives for their country, or at least its corporations.

Noticed in the Daily Herald coverage that:
"Warner said Thompson was selected for the award because of his dedication to the freedom of families through working to get obscenity out of the media. Thompson put his own career at risk fighting to keep indecent shows off the radio, and he was responsible for getting Howard Stern off public airwaves. He also won a case labeling 2 Live Crew's lyrics as obscene and convinced Time Warner to remove Ice T's song "Cop Killer" from stores worldwide.

None of this mentions his crusade against video games, which is in general the source of much of his most flagrant behavior. Is this deliberate omission of less flattering history?

To me, the worst thing that this award will do is not to gamers but rather to Jack's mind. Suddenly after always being beaten here is one group's way of saying that everything he's ever done to destroy freedom is right. His ego will be boosted to never before seen levels. He'll most likely start using that award to say he's right. "I've got proof that I'm right in the form of a small trophy given to me by a respectable group of people". Here is what I would add to that. I've got false claims that say I'm right in the form of a trophy no bigger then what they give to five year old bowlers that was given to me by a tiny group that nobody has even heard of before".

I did not read through all the comments so this may have already been stated but if not I have a theory as to who nominated Jack Thompson for the "Freedom" award.
Think about it people.....
Who do we know that believes he is the ultimate freedom fighter?
Who do we know that believes everyone in the world is out to crush him due to his religious beliefs?
Who thinks that whoever disagrees with him is part of the conspiracy to discredit and take away his religious freedoms?

My guess is that he heard about these awards through his conservative church group and decided to submit himself into the pool as a true champion freedom fighter. He wrote a long self righteous (sp?) letter and story about himself and how he has been persecuted all these years yet still continues the good fight. My guess is that the conservative selection comittee reviewed the application and broke into tears at the though of such a "devout christian" doing what he could to save the children and despite all the adversity he has faced he keeps going....What a true hero.
Some shit like that - and then he was contacted and interviewed over the phone. Of course they were feeding his ego so he really laid on the charm, probably even brought up his sick wife and how his fight keeps him from being able to care for her like the devout husband he is.......Another flood of tears and more "Jack Thompson the hero" emerges from those tears.

Jack, to them, personified family and god, as he claimed to "protect" families. "Freedom" and "country", at least in America, are mutually inclusive terms, and as Jack is against freedom, he is also against country. However, it wasn't a requirement to personify all four traditional values; Nor is it even possible, as "freedom" and "god" are mutually exclusive terms. The explanation: True freedom includes freedom from god, which the Christian god Jealous (see Exodus 34:14 for name verification) doesn't like.
Ironically, "Family" and "god" are also mutually exclusive terms, as Jesus said he came not to bring peace, but to start war. (see Matthew 10:34-37)

yes the Bible does say that but thats taken out of context. In this part Jesus is talking about how a father would turn in his son for being a follower of Christ. these are refurring (probably) to the time before Christianity was made legel. Jesus came to fullfil the first Covenent with Abraham and beging the Second Covenent.

You know, I feel sorry for Dennis. All this time & effort he's put into orchestrating this vast global conspiracy, acting like a combination of diplomat, general & batman supervillain, pulling together opposing forces & directing them towards a single unified goal, the crushing demise of the despicably good & righteous jack thompson & it's jack who gets the award... it's not right and I feel for you mate!

You don't have to feel sorry for him in the slightest. He has lots of readers and has helped unify the gamer community into a force that can challenge self-opinionated hacks like jack.
In the end, jack has a tin runner-up prize that he can gaze at remembering the times when he had some power in the court. While Dennis has a world-wide reader base, and can continue doing what he enjoys.
And seriously, what good is the crazy christian vote anymore? I'm sure they'll give bush a little cute trophy after he's out of office.
