Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA IV

July 11, 2008 -

Watchdog group the Parents Television Council has issued a "entertainment alert" condemning Grand Theft Auto IV as well as the CBS TV series Swingtown.

PTC president Tim Winter narrates:

Unfortunately, sex and violence often go together in today's media environment. That's especially true for many of the violent video games that are now flooding the marketplace. Topping them all for worst content is Grand Theft Auto.

In the latest edition of, the player is a thug who gets points for having sex with prostitutes, running over pedestrians and even shooting police officers. And our research shows that many chidlren are able to buy this adult-rated video game far too easily. That's because the retailers don't have any consequenced for abiding by their own rules. We're asking major retailers to not carry this sick game at all...

You can also write Congress to ask them to pass the Video Games Rating Enforcement Act which will give teeth to the current ratings system.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

IDIOTS. Nuff said.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

I got a 3 star wanted level for shooting police officers and a nice visit from a helicopter. Is that what they mean by points?

Also, if you do have a tryst with a prostitute, Nico actually says how he feels like a "lowlife". Guilt trips from Rockstar, lol.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

The PTC did research? What research? They are stealing other people lies!

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

This does seem to be the same regurgitated old line, doesn't it? "Points for sex, violence, running over people, blah blah blah..." Since they seem to be using old stats for kids buying GTA, are we sure they didn't just copy and paste a whining newspost about the last GTA released? It would make their tired rhetoric and misplaced indignation more efficient, at least.

Not to mention that it's WAY too late to ask anyone not to carry the game... I think just about everybody who wants GTA 4 has it by now, or isn't going to get it at all.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

I'll bet anyone five cold hard dollars that Jack Thompson will soon be saying that these people will have a seat in heaven prepared for them because of this newscast. It'll be because JT is against GTA4, and now that these folks have declared themselves against GTA4 as well. I'll be waiting for Jack's response.

I AM A LOST SOUL, CONDEMNED TO HAUNT THE DREAMS OF JOHN BRUCE "JACK" THOMPSON UNTIL HIS CRUSADE AGAINST VIDEO GAMES ENDS. SOMEONE, PLEASE! END MY SUFFERING!

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

I'm laughing at this.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

I think somebody has to create some kind of anti-watchdog group to counter this type of speech. Yes, I´l agree with people who don´t want violent games being bought so easily by children, but the lies and misinformation (they make people believe that the industry just keep releasing GTA clones) is not acceptable.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

Yes, the ECA is that counter organization. It will take some time and some hand waving to get the media's attention, but we'll get there.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

I think the ECA is sort of meant to be that but ether way I wish we could get some statements out on the news to the effect of what you're saying. This scaremongering is really getting annoying.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

Yeah, but this needs a big level of aggresivity (not Jack Thompson´s level, I mean) and being actively answering these communicates from watchdogs groups.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

the player is a thug who gets points for having sex with prostitutes, running over pedestrians and even shooting police officers

the player is a thug who gets points

gets points

points

I cannot be the only one who is really annoyed by this.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

So, you get money.

I'm willing to let them off on this point and assume they simplified for the sake of the audience. Money is treated more as a score than a means to buy stuff (unless they severely changed the mechanism since GTA 3). Sure, you can spend it and earn it but the logic behind earning it really has more to do with gameplay than a logical financial system.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

what about the rating system in your stats. That counts as points (useless points at that) right?

Oh and I noticed that they still haven't put in a 'cops killed' stat yet even though they have an absurd amount of other statistics (boats blown up, distance traveled on foot, cash spent on guns and ammo etc.)

---------------------------------------------------- Debates are like merry go rounds. Two people take their positions then they go through the same points over and over and over again. Then when it's over they have the same positions they started in.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

The whole thing has become a TV Trope:

Whats really amusing is it is a subtrope of "Did Not Do The Reasearch"

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

Haha, yeah. TV shows depict video games in the funniest ways. It would be the same if, if the TV producers didn't understand what art is, they would've told an actor to go bat-**** crazy with the paintbrush like Jackson Pollock, for a landscape painting made with subtle strokes.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

Yeah, that part pissed me off as well.

OMG, I shot a guy in a video game who's skinned as a cop,I might just do heroin now!

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

At least it's easier to prove to them that they don't do research and lie.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

Yup, again with the points nonsense, you'd expect critics to start wising up by now, research the game you're bashing, please... How ignorant are these people? I mean... really.

The 2007 FTC report shows that its getting harder and harder to get games rated above your age, so that point is utterly invalid.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

Kinda bugs me too, but its just semantic really.  By virtue of people in the real world keeping certain amount of money on one's person, any person in the game has the potential to be carrying money.  Taking a literal definition of a point: "20. A single unit, as in counting, rating, or measuring." you're gaining money that is being added to your "count" of money.

And expanding the idea for a second, money is often equated with power.  Status.  A Rating.  A measure of worth and buying ability.

Sooooo . . . they are technically right.

Not that anyone wants to give them any validation.  But I could see where someone could take the choice to play the game like it was Pac Man, and run around decking people  for "points".  Granted, there's potential (but not certain) consequence for this point collecting, in the form of the wanted level.  But even Pac-Man had the ghosts . . .

I dunno.  If they ever take a moment to forumate an informed statement and opinion on the game, they'd have alot of leverage in debate on morality.

Not that a game's perceived morality should really beyond the rating system matter . . .

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

Semantics, maybe.  But more to the point is that it speaks to the overall ignorance and lack of fact-checking done by the PTC.  Not that their hawking of the Video Game Ratings Enforcement Act doesn't already do this, of course...

"De minimus non curat lex"

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

However, you don't get Points (or money) for having sex with prostitutes, you lose it. You regain health (I think, I havent' actually played the game).

Does anyone else get more then a faint whiff of the Comic Code Authority? They used to have rules where bad guys in the comics were litteraly not alowed to get away or be unpunished. Doing anything bad had to have bad consequenses per the rules.

See, they don't want there to be a game where you play a bad guy. If our character is a bad guy, he might do bad things.

Go figure.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

heh, no, you are not the only one.

I have yet to get points in GTA4 when I shoot a police officer.  If I shoot one, I get punished by having more of them shoot at me.  I think I am playing it wrong....

[/sarcasm]

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

Yeah, For some reason the media still thinks all games use points. An older person I know was suprised when I told her videogames have voice acting in them.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

You forgot that quite a few big name stars are doing the voice acting.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

I didn't even bother with them in the game, hell I didn't even bother with the strippers. I just took Roman in and waited a few minutes and took him home.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

And our research shows that many chidlren are able to buy this adult-rated video game far too easily.

Can someone please send this guy the FTC's report on underage kids buying M rated games?

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

I doubt they would care.

Re: Parents Television Council Issues Video Alert on "Sick" GTA

They do care actually...About the 2003 FTC report. Everything after that is ignored by them.

Andrew EisenYes, the Wii U upscales but rendering in a higher resolution looks a hell of a lot better.08/01/2014 - 10:35pm
Andrew EisenIt's pretty. Lots of videos of it floating around. Just search "Xenoblade dolphin" and you'll find them.08/01/2014 - 10:32pm
ZippyDSMleeThe WII upscales tho. Matthew: It might be becue cartoonish desings do not age as fast as presudo realisim.08/01/2014 - 10:29pm
Matthew WilsonPeople who have run the Mario Galaxy games on a emulator have said they look better then most xb1/ps4 games when upscaled, so it would be interesting to see a upscaled version of Xenoblade08/01/2014 - 9:24pm
Andrew EisenHeck, it would probably sell better to newbies anyway. Even with its awesome art direction, the game looked dated when it came out years ago. I imagine an SD version would be a tougher sell.08/01/2014 - 8:55pm
Andrew EisenBecause it would be cool, would serve the game's fantastic art direction well and encourage people who've already played it to buy it again.08/01/2014 - 7:42pm
ZippyDSMleeWhy bother with an HD relese just repack the damn thing and promote it since it will play on the WIIU anyway....08/01/2014 - 7:04pm
Andrew EisenPlus, with Nintendo carrying the Wii U almost all by itself, it could help plug one of the unfortunately inevitable release schedule gaps.08/01/2014 - 3:23pm
Andrew EisenAn HD re-release would be cool though. It's a great game (and quite the looker, especially when up-rezzed) and more people should play it (the game had a limited release at a time when the Wii was all but dead an buried).08/01/2014 - 3:21pm
E. Zachary KnightSo no, people are not going to need to play the Wii game to undstand or enjoy the Wii U game.08/01/2014 - 1:27pm

MaskedPixelanteIt's my secret hope that Nintendo announces Xenoblade HD to be released in the leadup to Xenoblade Chronicles X, or at least a mass market version of the first game so that people aren't going into this one blind.08/01/2014 - 12:40pm
PHX CorpI'm going to do a test stream later today, if anyone is intrested07/31/2014 - 2:40pm
Andrew EisenYes, I'm such a big Nintendo dork that I read Nintendo's quarterly financial reports.07/31/2014 - 2:09pm
Andrew EisenCool tidbit - Mario Kart 8 sales account for more than half of total Wii U software sales for the last quarter even though it was only available for the last third.07/31/2014 - 2:09pm
Andrew EisenStill a pretty cool promotion. Unfortunately for me, I'm not interested in purchasing Mario Kart 8 and I already owned or didn't want any of the free games on offer.07/31/2014 - 1:43pm
Andrew EisenInteresting that EU had 10 games to choose from while North America only had four.07/31/2014 - 1:41pm
MaskedPixelanteIt certainly worked, I probably would never have bought Mario Kart 8 if it didn't come with a free copy of Wind Waker HD.07/31/2014 - 1:14pm
Andrew EisenI imagine will see similar promotions like "Buy Mario Kart 8 get a download code for one of these specific games" but almost certainly not for all of its (however you would define) biggest releases.07/31/2014 - 11:24am
MaskedPixelanteI wonder if Nintendo is going to be doing "buy one get one free" promos for all their biggest releases going forward.07/31/2014 - 10:48am
