It’s not always easy to predict which video games are going to upset people.
One of the games that debuted at last week’s E3 was Sony and Titan Studios’ upcoming PSN title Fat Princess, a cartoony, capture-the-flag game in which the object is to rescue your princess from the enemy’s dungeon. The hook is that the enemy is plumping up your princess with cake, making her more and more difficult to haul back.
It’s cute. It’s colorful. It’s surprisingly bloody. And, from many reports, it’s a lot of fun. But, according to Joystiq, at least two feminist bloggers have taken issue with the fat part of Fat Princess.
Shakesville’s Melissa McEwan says in an open letter to Sony:
[Fat Princess] looks and sounds just adorable—but the only thing I can't figure out is why anyone would want to rescue a fat princess in the first place, since everyone knows that fat girls are unlovable human garbage at whom any sensible bloke would sooner hurl invective than cast a longing glance... I'm positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative assholes.
Meanwhile, Feminist Gamers’ Mighty Ponygirl offers her take:
Honestly, the “core game mechanics” are brilliant, and if I didn’t care one whit about the objectification of women or fat-bashing, I would think this was the best thing since… well, Team Fortress 2…
Instead of running out into the forest to find cake to fatten up the princess with, why not go out and find gold (which is a lot heavier than cake) to stuff into a treasure chest. The more gold in the chest, the heavier it would be, and the harder it would be to carry.
Oh, but that’s not as “cute” as cake and fat chicks. Right.
For his part, Titan Studios' art director, James Green, said in an email to Joystiq:
Does it make it better or worse that the concept artist (who designed the look, characters, everything) is a girl?

But if they had called it "Fat Pot Of Gold" then they wouldn't be getting all this free publicity! Though they could have a leprechaun guarding it and get the IRA all upset...
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Better yet, how about a fat leprechaun? They could change the armies' colours to orange and green, too.

Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
I personally think these idiotic feminists should be praising Sony. With all their bashing about how "fat people are human garbage", the fact remains that these noble knights are still attempting to save her, despite her weight. Bravo Sony! Your brilliant game mechanic has shown that fat people can be loved and desired just as much as skinny people!
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
I used to engage feminist horse-hockey every time I saw it, pointing out the obvious flaws in the hypocritical dogma and rhetoric, completely ignoring the social more against men calling shenanigans on what are clearly, obviously contrived excuses to get riled up about... well, anything.
A lot of the criticisms that feminists have are genuine, but largely they're not new and they tend to be works in progress.
But over the last 15 years or so I've grown bored with it. The conversation is always the same... usually leading to me being called names and attacked personally. So... I'm bored with it, it's never different and as a result I no longer am surprised by this kind of idiocy. The reality is that if you put a female character in a game somewhere some feminist (in a frenzied attempt to remain relevant and keep their dead religion alive at all costs) will take exception. She's too fat, she's too quiet, she's too bitchy, she's too skinny, she's... whatever. But if there are no female characters in the game then it's merely castigation for that too, leading into another rant about how women are under-represented in the industry.
I'm at the point now where I'm fairly certain I've heard it all. Every argument, every specious statistic, every ridiculous claim of systemic descrimination against women, all of it. I know the counter-argument to every one and I know the counter-counter argument.
I'm bored... I'm bored of this Hallmark Cards equivalent of human rights movement. Seriously... feminists... find something worthwhile to do with your time. You are more than the cause you claim to support.

Well said, well said. I do believe that you wrapped up my feelings exactly in this post (without the belittling undertones and overtones I would let seep in).

The fun part is the two bloggers closed their comments box. I know there were too many trolls, but some trolls were actually aporting some opinions. They were sarcastic, but I think sarcasm is valid on Internet.
Both bloggers were more busy looking for attention.

Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Anybody here remember the video for the older Prodigy song "Smack My Bitch Up" (please don't start yelling at me about it...I didn't name the song). Anyways, I have shown that to some of the more "vocal" women that I have known and got a really interesting, and telling, view of how they think from their reactions. (This by NO means covers everybody...only these few that I showed it to). The video is played out from the first person perspective of a person going from a bar, to sleeping with a woman, to getting into fights, to even throwing up. For each horrible act, they pointed out that "guys act like this" and how "horrible we are to women".
Now here's the kicker...right at the end of the video the camera looks into a mirror and you find that it was actually a WOMAN doing EVERYTHING in the video that they just panned...but magically their perspective changes from "a guy could do this" to a "woman NEVER would do this...it's sexist, and made by a woman hater". I know very few real women think like this all fo the time, but this was a bit of a shock. It still amazes me how people can say something when they think it's in their favor or in their view, but as soon as they are shown something different or that challenges what they believe all women should be or should be shown as, they freak out.
Now me and my wife are both a little larger than we both want to be, and we've been honest to each other about it. We've changed our diets and work out at the gym more. We do this not just because we want to be healty and enjoy our lives as we get older, but because we want to set an example into our kids. But as soon as I've made the comment that me and my wife need to lose some weight in public, I've been accused of "objectifying" her and wanting her to look like a "man" wants her to be like. I just want us healthy so when the kids are grown and gone, we can be in great shape to enjoy our lives. I love her no matter how she looks..I just prefer us both being around. But sadly some people still screw those words and call me evil. Just can't win I guess lol.

Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Hoorah! to you and your wife. My wife and I made similar decisions. We don't have kids yet, but we are trying to improve our general health so that when we do have kids, we can have the energy to enjoy them and the health to be around long enough to see them raise their own families. I quit smoking 6 years ago for similar reasons. I wanted to make sure I was going to spend time with my family when I was older, instead of dying of lung cancer :\
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Better late than never Kojiro...so congrats from us on quitting smoking! My wife is an RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) so I can tell you some tales of what a life of smoking will do to you that will make you glad you stopped while you still could lol.
Anyways, I think kids are fat today because of the food, as well as videogames/tv. I collect videogames so we have just about every system available to play at home along with some arcade machines, but we limit the amount that we actually play to a pretty small frame. I push my kids to get out and do things as well as playing some games to have fun. My wife and son are both in karate together which they love. My younger daughter and son play outside, and will probably get into karate or whatever they choose when they are old enough. There is life outside the house, but since I play/colelct videogames, and hold a second job as a videogame retailer mananger, most people feel that I must stay in a dark damp cave with my eyes glued to the TV.
In regards to the food, I just taught my kids to eat when they are hungry, and that they only need to eat the amount they are comfortable with. Amazing how easy that is. My kids have even gotten to the point that when my oldest wants a snack or a treat, he just goes and gets a fresh apple out of the pile we keep in the fridge for him and that's it.

Should have responded with damn straight I objectify her and thank god she objectifies me. She wants me to be healthy attractive and able to live a long life so I can be the object of her love and I do the same thing right back.

Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Nobody is saying that people don't rtecognise the wider significance of a game's themes. However, to suggest that Fat Princess is an example of an indoctrinating game when you have titles like Hezbollah's 'Special Force 2' is, quite frankly, fucking ridiculous.
The point being, these people complaining about Fat Princess need to get over themselves.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
I think the problem is that they're lacking a grasp on the game mechanics. It's the other team (ie. the bad guys) who're fattening up the princess. One supposes that upon rescuing their royalty, the winners can hook her up to some liposuction to bring her back to a healthy weight. (But not overly skinny, lest she become a Barbie-styled target for objectification!)
Having tabbed through what few screenshots there are, I don't see anything truly controversial yet -- but if the game ends up glorifying the fat aspect, then yeah, I could see problems with that. Bad enough that the only current role models for women in videogames are shirt-stuffers like Tifa Lockheart or Lara Croft. When is "normal" going to make a comeback?

I always figured Samus Aran was a pretty good female videogame character to look up to as a role model. Her games are actually good too unlike Croft and some of the other huge breasted videogame charcters.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Heh, I was actually thinking of going back and editing my post, because Samus was a good role model until they started giving her a bizarre morality (Fusion) and a skintight suit (Zero Mission.)

Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
If the game was called "Skinny Princess" and you had to give the princess clothes and shoes to get her to follow you, would that cause any less of a backlash from feminists or larger people? because in that game they would be objectifying a thin caricature instead of a "fat" one, which probably would get them MORE bad press than this iteration. It is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Here's some food for thought:
What if the game was 'Fat Prince,' where all the soldiers are female, and the objective to rescue the kidnapped prince, who's been fattened up by the other side, also comprised entirely of female soldiers.
Complete gender reversal of the roles. I'm sure the hard core psycho feminists would say that game is insulting to women because it puts them in a subservient role to a male figure. ("Bring me more food!" "Save me!")
Debating with psycho feminists is like trying to debate with buffalo stampede. Doesn't matter how good your points are, you're still going to get run over.

I agree...Best thing to do is just nod blankly and then ignore them. They feed off of attention! Just treat them like a forum troll.
If you cannot best a man in argument, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
You know, I'm a white male, mid-twenties, of average height, weight, and build. I'm in the narrow demographic of people who can't say ANYTHING without being a racist or a sexist. WTB equality! I want to say things and get away with them, too!
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
I'm sorry, you can't say anything as you are the reason the world is so horrible, we all know the world would be better off if all white males between the ages of 20-40 would just disappear ... sheesh didn't you get the memo =).

Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
You know what this reminds me of? I'm sure that a lot of people here have seen the movie "Wall-E" Pixar's latest film. And I think most will agree it's an amazeing story, very heartwarming and tearjerking in parts. A complety sublime movie, and one that deserves to be reconized for the piece of art that it is. You know what I've been hearing around the webboards I frequent? Which, by the way, are mainly for people who like larger girls and whatnot? How the movie makes fun of fat people. About how it's "Size Negetave" and now I won't take my kids to go see it, because I don't want them exposed to that kinda Hollywood propaganda. It's this kinda thing, where everyone is obsessed that "I am being OPRESSED!" that really annoys me. Everything is not about you, They were not trying to make a negative game, heck, the whole POINT is to SAVE the fat princess, despite what the good Miss McEwan said in her profanity filled blogpost.
I just don't understand people who take EVERYthing as a personal caculated attack on them. Lighten up I say. You are not that important.
If you cannot best a man in argument, all is not lost. You can still call him vile names.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
It's really easy for someone to take personal offense - some people are really insecure. Others can be paranoid or really angry because of personal experience.
I don't feel that movie was making fun of fat people, either - I felt it was saying "society is consuming too much and becoming too dependant on other things; we must take responsibility for ourselves and our future". The people were modeled to be a lot more like babies (who are FULLY dependant on others for their survival), rather than fat adults. I'm a pretty straightforward person, but that metaphor/allegory/whatever you want call it isn't hard to understand.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Its sad how people don't get things and then blame the film for being all hurtful and stuff considering it was a enviromental message that we need to stop being lazy and give a damn about the enviroment.....not FAT PEOPLE BAD!

Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Does no one have a problem with making fun of mentally retarded fat guys on t.v.??? Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, Frank Caliendo, etc. I mean, it's epidemic! As an obese male with a below average I.Q., I am offended by the Simpsons game and it's depiction of Homer's travels through the Land of Chocolate...mmmmmmmmmmm...chocolate.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Accutally Homer was intended to be just a stuipd dad but not a borderline retarded one. They ever made fun of it on the Simpsons that overtime Homer seemed to be getting epicly stupid as seasons went on.
As for Family Guy there was that one episode where Lois did get fat and was being harassed by Peter for being fat so your absolutely right. If anything they should of been angry at that episode of Family Guy and not being angry at that episode and sending letters to Seth McFarland only means that they are HYPOCRITS!!
Thanks dude you helped me find the key to their hypocracy. xD
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Er...the episode in which Lois became fat led to Peter suddenly finding her incredibly attractive. They made love constantly until she had a heart attack from overexerting herself.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
I can see why they'd be upset, but I disagree with them. I'm a fat female gamer. I have no qualms saying such. This looks like a game I'd enjoy - it's meant to be silly and fun; it's not meant to intentionally or maliciously bash fat women. I can see how it can be seen that way, but I don't think that's what the game is trying to do. (I feel a lot of times, "artistic" or "developers'" intent can get lost in a game, and in cases like this, it's important to see where they're coming from.)
Also saying "a girl made it" does not help your argument, Mr. Green. That's like saying, "HEY I CAN MAKE FUN OF GAY PEOPLE CUZ MY BEST FRIEND'S GAAAAAY". Doesn't work, and it's not cool.
I also believe that feminism should be about equality with men - not about preaching how women are superior to men. However, I do believe that both genders should be more understanding and accepting of each other. Woman-bashing (and male-bashing) is definitely not okay.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Praise jeebus, yours is the first mature response in this thread, Arashi.
You set a good example. I wish everyone preceding you would follow it.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
I am not sure the 'because my best friend is gay' analogy holds in this case. This isn't 'my friend is a girl', it's 'the artist who's responbility it was to set the tone and designed the imagry for the game was a girl', which is pretty differnt. This isn't some bystandard that happens to be near by, he is talking about someone with significant influence over the game's look and imagry.
Within the gay analogy, it would be like talking about, say, a gay oriented movie where the director was strait, people got offended, then the director reveals that the writers were gay.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Good point.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Though maggie above also pointed out something that I had blanked on.
The exuse does kinda fall flat since women can be quite sexist twords women too. So the argument works if he is specificly countering the idea that the game was made by insensive men being sexist twords women, but is not a complete argument against the idea the game is sexist.
Wow that was convoluted english, my bad.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
That's not convoluted at all - it makes a lot of sense.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
I sincerely doubt that 'the deisgner was a girl' is the guy's only argument on whether or not the game is sexist.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
And the sad part is that if you tried to have a conversation with the people on that website, they would simply make fun of your grammer and would just dance around the issue. xD
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
My grammar is impeccable, baby. ;)
Reading the comments on those pages made my head spin with the stupidity of it all - and I'm not just talking about the feminists. Some very immature gamers didn't really make their points clear (and by that, I mean they sounded like a bunch of kids). Yes, intentionally baiting angry people TOTALLY makes them see your point of view. Some of the more reasonable comments did, unfortunately, seem to fall on deaf ears, which is too bad. The more rational comments should have at least been heard instead of being told almost immediately that they were wrong.
It's all about respect. Giving it means getting it.
Oh, also? If you don't want to support something? Then DON'T BUY IT. It's as simple as that. Companies don't make stuff that people won't buy.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Melissa McEwan needs to grow up.
I guarantee that if the game
I guarantee that if the game had been titled "Fat King" and had you rescuing a tubby old soul with a beard, there would not have been one single iota of complaint or controversy.
It's saddening that groups who proclaim to be looking out for certain demographics just exacerbate problems by searching for or creating controversy like this where none exists. The same people who would scream if there were no black/female/overweight characters continue to scream when they are there. I think games, hell the entire world of fiction would be incredibly dull if every single character was a boring cookie cutter figure, designed to be as non-offensive as possible. I'm not saying that every black character should be a bad guy for instance, but there should be no outrage if a black guy is chosen to be the antagonist in a game. The same goes for any member of either sex, any race, religion, etc.
Re: I guarantee that if the game
I have a theory that as society gets less and less racist and less and less sexist these groups are struggling to find a reason to still exist. So they look for controversy, they look to stir up shit where none exists so that they can tell their followers that they are still needed (this process can be done subconsciously as well).
Re: I guarantee that if the game
Of course there would be no complaints there, guys embrace their fatness, I know I do!
It's all about accepting yourself, and while fat guys may decide to work on their personalities and their humor many overweight women just brood on the fact they are overweight. This usually just leads to them becoming bitter and hateful.
This of course is just based on my own personal experiences and the people I have met and known awhile.
EMBRACE THE FATNESS!!!

No. Too many people with too many values and beliefs that will be insulted if you happen to continue on with the creative process.

Well, that's the other thing...it doesn't. She just threw it in to show her PC street cred.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
As someone to considers herself a feminist, I'm not too happy with the notion that being one means you have to get upset over every, often trivial, things(that, like the cake, is a lie). Being a complainer doesn't qualify you as a feminist. The game looks amusing to me, a funny new take on the rescue the princess game.
Re: Sony's Fat Princess Causing Controversy
Luckly the notion is slowly dieing out.
Whiney extreamists will always find an audiance but they will increasingly be the minority.
Plus the cultural fears over feminism are dieing off so there is less imagry of the 'insane feminatizi' floating around, which means even when these outliers find an audiance they get less benifit out of it.
