Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

July 30, 2008

It's a safe bet that Meredith Vieira wasn't hired to replace Katie Couric based on her singing ability.

On this morning's program, Vieira along with Today Show cohost Matt Lauer, weather guy Al Roker and correspondent Natalie Morales played Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer.

Living on a Prayer lost.

GP: Thanks to reader Adam Muller for the heads-up!

Wow Meredith is going to replace Katie Courich?  Awsome.  She is a class act and I could care less how badly she plays Rock Band.  xD

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

katie courich works for CBS, this was MSNBC. That replacement already happened. If I'm wrong on this just tell me.

Also, I lol'd a lot at this, I was hoping they would wind up failing or something though...

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

You're right, Meredith replaced Katie on NBC's Today show a long time ago... and Katie went elsewhere.  I wish they had a little closer up shot (and story about) the figureens (sp?) you can make of your rockers... It looked like Harmonix made a quick set to look like Today Show's cast (they were on the TV stand and camera quickly panned by), I kinda wanna see those things.

And yet, not quite as embarrassingly painful as Nintendo's demo of Wii Music.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I saw this this morning. Wondering if it would get here. It was really bad. The best part came when some kid was substituted for Matt Lauer. The kid just stood there playing the game, no bobbing or anything.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

Bravo to the Today Show for not ragging on video games and actually picking one up and seeing what the fuss is about!  I'm so glad they didn't go off on it like some tool musicians who say "this is rotting our children's minds, why not play a real guitar?"

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

Looked like they had fun, and thats what it is all about

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I don't think the crowd shared their enthusiasm though..

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

The best thing about that video was what appeared to be examples of the figures you'll be able to buy of your characters at the 2:48 mark.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I like the way that of all the non gaming media outlets I've seen play Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Pump it Up or DDR, this was the first time it seemed like they played enough to get the hang of it before playing it live. Usually "Clank clank wail *female anchor screams* clank whizz bonk FAIL!" It's almost as though they genuinely enjoyed it.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

The new rockband has a 'no-fail' option built in.  Switch it on and no matter how bad you play you can still get through the whole song.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

That was... terrible.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

terrible, sure, but they were positive and seemed to be having fun.

Here are we -- and yonder yawns the universe.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I couldn't rag out on people for trying something new.  Gaming is about having fun no matter how well (or badly) you play.

A segment that doesn't portray gamers as monster mass murderers just waiting to pop and highlights adult accessibility and good old(new?) fashioned fun?  We should be overjoyed rather than sneering down our noses like elitest wankers ; )

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I can't think of anything witty to say, so I'll just say this:

LOL!!!!!

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

It was so funny I was laughing so hard becuase it is so bad.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

Well, at least they had fun.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

A respectable effort, they win half the internet as a prize.

I just wanna throw this in, Rock Band 2's songlist sounds amazing.

My ears!  My ears!  They are BLEEDING!

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH!

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

Too bad they didn't play 'More Than A Feeling'.  I've been told that Boston songs have the potential to cure cancer.  With millions of viewers, that could have been a heck of a lot of cancer cured.

Reignin' Bacon FTW!!!

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I thought it was awesome!!! The point was that video games can be fun and they looked like they was having a good time. I'm sure they werent airing this to show that the NBC staff is the greatest freaking rock band players. it was for a laugh and I laugh and enjoy every moment of it.

Valdearg: 19 states have no protections, and another 10 only have protections for public sector jobs.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:32pm
Andrew Eisen: Well, most businesses have equal rights policies in place and just because there's no specific state level protection for it, doesn't make discrimination right or legal. Still, no argument against adding such protections.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:28pm
Valdearg: More information. Apparently, it's worse than I actually thought.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:28pm
Valdearg: Check the link. Apparently, its more like 20 states that have no protections.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:26pm
Andrew Eisen: In the US? Not that I'm aware of. Sad if true.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:25pm
Valdearg: @AE: Actually, I think, at least for now, businesses can still discriminate against gays in a few states.. Something like 5 or 8. Its part of why Gay Rights Advocates are in support of the Employee Nondiscrimination Act, or ENDA.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:22pm
Valdearg: @AE: And that's fine. Official "Church" functions are fine, despite the fact that it's discrimination, it's what I guess I would consider "acceptable" discrimination, despite the fact that I hate to use "acceptable" to define it.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:21pm
Valdearg: What's stopping someone from working with the church to declare a Catholic Corporation, that would retain it's "right" to discriminate against non-Catholics?
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:20pm
Valdearg: Let me ask you this. What defines something as "catholic"? There are Catholic Schools, Churchs, Charities, and even law firms.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:20pm
Andrew Eisen: Indeed. You can restrict the membership of your private club however you see fit. However, a business can't refuse to hire someone based on sexual orientation.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:20pm
gellymatos: Would you hire someone against gay rights for a position of leadership in a gay rights advocacy group?
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:19pm
gellymatos: So, it's wrong to not hire a guy for a position specific to a belief when his belief conflicts with his position.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:18pm
Valdearg: And either way, it's discrimination. I'm not saying that the Government should force the church to make gay people priests, but there are plenty of other seemingly "religious" posts that really aren't all that religious.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:17pm
Valdearg: There's a fine line between Job Descrimination and Letting them practice their religious "right" to discriminate.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:15pm
gellymatos: Oh, and they are worried that "would restrict the right of a church school to employ a head teacher who shared their faith"
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:15pm
Andrew Eisen: If it is separate, then the church has every right to discriminate against its own members. Put another way, the gov't has no say who the church lets in its own organization.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:14pm
Andrew Eisen: Haven't read the law and not sure how it works overseas but is there a separation of church and state?
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:14pm
Valdearg: Like I said. He wants the Church to retain it's right to Job Discrimination. He want's the right to be above the law, and discriminate against gays. ALSO, there were provisions in the bill to prevent that scenario, with the priesthood.
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:12pm
gellymatos: How about actually reading the article: " which they fear will make them admit homosexuals to the priesthood".
Posted 02/09/10 at 12:09pm
Valdearg: So, yeah.. From your official leader, your church OPPOSES equality.
