Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

July 30, 2008

It's a safe bet that Meredith Vieira wasn't hired to replace Katie Couric based on her singing ability.

On this morning's program, Vieira along with Today Show cohost Matt Lauer, weather guy Al Roker and correspondent Natalie Morales played Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer.

Living on a Prayer lost.

GP: Thanks to reader Adam Muller for the heads-up!

Wow Meredith is going to replace Katie Courich?  Awsome.  She is a class act and I could care less how badly she plays Rock Band.  xD

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

katie courich works for CBS, this was MSNBC. That replacement already happened. If I'm wrong on this just tell me.

Also, I lol'd a lot at this, I was hoping they would wind up failing or something though...

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

You're right, Meredith replaced Katie on NBC's Today show a long time ago... and Katie went elsewhere.  I wish they had a little closer up shot (and story about) the figureens (sp?) you can make of your rockers... It looked like Harmonix made a quick set to look like Today Show's cast (they were on the TV stand and camera quickly panned by), I kinda wanna see those things.

And yet, not quite as embarrassingly painful as Nintendo's demo of Wii Music.

...I pray this is on "The Soup" on Friday.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I saw this this morning. Wondering if it would get here. It was really bad. The best part came when some kid was substituted for Matt Lauer. The kid just stood there playing the game, no bobbing or anything.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

Bravo to the Today Show for not ragging on video games and actually picking one up and seeing what the fuss is about!  I'm so glad they didn't go off on it like some tool musicians who say "this is rotting our children's minds, why not play a real guitar?"

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

Looked like they had fun, and thats what it is all about

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I don't think the crowd shared their enthusiasm though..

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

The best thing about that video was what appeared to be examples of the figures you'll be able to buy of your characters at the 2:48 mark.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I like the way that of all the non gaming media outlets I've seen play Rock Band, Guitar Hero, Pump it Up or DDR, this was the first time it seemed like they played enough to get the hang of it before playing it live. Usually "Clank clank wail *female anchor screams* clank whizz bonk FAIL!" It's almost as though they genuinely enjoyed it.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

The new rockband has a 'no-fail' option built in.  Switch it on and no matter how bad you play you can still get through the whole song.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

That was... terrible.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

terrible, sure, but they were positive and seemed to be having fun.

Here are we -- and yonder yawns the universe.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I couldn't rag out on people for trying something new.  Gaming is about having fun no matter how well (or badly) you play.

A segment that doesn't portray gamers as monster mass murderers just waiting to pop and highlights adult accessibility and good old(new?) fashioned fun?  We should be overjoyed rather than sneering down our noses like elitest wankers ; )

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I can't think of anything witty to say, so I'll just say this:

LOL!!!!!

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

It was so funny I was laughing so hard becuase it is so bad.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

Well, at least they had fun.

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

A respectable effort, they win half the internet as a prize.

I just wanna throw this in, Rock Band 2's songlist sounds amazing.

My ears!  My ears!  They are BLEEDING!

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH!

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

Too bad they didn't play 'More Than A Feeling'.  I've been told that Boston songs have the potential to cure cancer.  With millions of viewers, that could have been a heck of a lot of cancer cured.

Reignin' Bacon FTW!!!

Re: Meredith Vieira, Today Show Crew Play Rock Band ...Badly

I thought it was awesome!!! The point was that video games can be fun and they looked like they was having a good time. I'm sure they werent airing this to show that the NBC staff is the greatest freaking rock band players. it was for a laugh and I laugh and enjoy every moment of it.

JDKJ: Which could be explained by both (a) and (b).
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:56am
Austin_Lewis: JDKJ: You forgot C) the fact that, for some reason, every time he did something that would suggest he shouldn't be in the military, let alone an officer, higher ups ignored it or let it slide.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:51am
JDKJ: Part of the problem is, I believe, that (a) the Army had a lot of time and money already invested in him and which they were unwilling to simply write-off and (b) an increasing need for the type of skills and services he provided.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:48am
JDKJ: And that even if he was begging not to get cut loose, he was apparently a real good candidate for being cut loose, anyway.
Posted 11/07/09 at 10:11am
JDKJ: @chada: And while Kennedy once noted that there's usually more than enough blame for everyone to get a slice, the possibility that the Army was unwilling to cut loose someone who was asking to get cut loose could be a factor.

chadachada321: Whoops, was out of the convo for awhile. I do wonder what type of ammo he used etc, but the real issue is WHY he did it, not HOW
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:56am
JDKJ: But if it turns out that they actually did, they'll have Hell to pay.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:45am
JDKJ: And I'd tend to rule out the possibilty of FN Herstal supplying restricted ammunition to someone merely because they're ordering it from a military base.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:37am
JDKJ: I know you don't leave your gated community and get around much in dark alleys, so you may be surprised to learn that there's this thing called "the black market" where, if you've got enough money, ain't too much of anything which can't be bought.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:36am
Austin_Lewis: Or, maybe he or someone else at the base ordered the SS190 from FN Herstal.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:32am
Austin_Lewis: the hands of private owners. They run about 300 dollars minimum for a box of 50, and boxes of AP 5.7 are extremely scarce, mainly residing in the hands of Class III stores or individuals who for one reason or another got a demo box of it.
Posted 11/07/09 at 09:30am
Austin_Lewis: There are other firearms that fire the 5.7. However, I too would like to know where he got the ammo and what kind was used. Maybe Hasan, planning not to live through this, went out and bought one the boxes of SS190 that are floating around in
Posted 11/07/09 at 08:44am
JDKJ: And it isn't yet clear what type of ammunition Hasan used. It's strange that he purchased a gun but didn't purchase ammunition for it at the same place and time. Especially because the calibre required is peculiar to the actual gun.
