New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games of Subversion"

August 5, 2008 -

A few more details have emerged on the alleged killing of a Bangkok cab driver by 19-year-old Polwat Chinno (left), said by Thai authorities to be "obsessed" with Grand Theft Auto.

The Bangkok Post reports:

The Family Network yesterday called on the Culture Ministry to ban the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) video game franchise after incidences of copycat violence by players.

In its statement, the network blamed GTA for at least two violent incidents, including the fatal stabbing of taxi driver Kuan Phokang on Sunday by Polwat Chinno, a 19-year-old student known to be an obsessive player of the game.

GP: It's unclear at this point exactly what type of organization the Family Network is. The group is mentioned at this site.

According to the Family Network manager Wanchai Boonpracha, a shooting at Talad Thai wholesale market in Pathum Thani last year was also copied from one of the games.

He said the granting of a licence to the online version of the game by the Office of National Cultural Commission in August last year made it readily available at internet cafes and games arcades, increasing the likelihood of copycat crimes by teenagers.

"The Family Network demands the Culture Ministry revokes the licence of GTA and other games with inappropriate violent and sexual content" Mr Wanchai said in the statement.

He said that GTA was banned in several countries, including Australia and England.

GP: The GamePolitics coverage of the Pathum Thani market shooting is here. Wanchai Boonpracha is incorrect regarding Australia and England. The game was never banned in the U.K. (perhaps he is thinking of Manhunt 2) and the Australian market received GTA IV with the hooker animations removed.

Amporn Benjapolpitak of the Mental Health Department, doubted that the video game was entirely to blame for Mr Polwat's behaviour.Ms Amporn yesterday interviewed Mr Polwat's friends and teachers at school and found that he had suffered from heightened anxiety.

"I don't think excessive playing of the game is the sole cause. There must be other causes too," she said. "His friends told me that [his personality] had changed."

GP: So, perhaps initial reports of a totally together teen made homicidal by GTA were not totally accurate? A second Bangkok Post article contains additional misinformation under the headline Games of Subversion:

The Public Health Ministry, which has monitored the impact of thse games on the mental and physical health of young Thais, yesterday released a list of 10 online games which have been banned in the United States since last year because of their inappropriate content...

They are: Manhunt; Scarface; 50 Cent: Bulletproof; 300: The Video Game; The Godfather; Killer; Resident Evil 4; God of War; Hitman: Blood Money; and Grand Theft Auto.

GP: There has never been a video game banned in the United States.

Thanks good job;

Btw, I think Atari and Midway will drop out too, but mostly travesti because  these guys have done nothing travesti or little and need to start saving costs. and dizi izle

YES.

Now I don't have to get off my ass for the important shit anymore!

Whats next, ordering pizza from Xbox live?

Wait... I think that sounds like a good idea.

But I think voting should MAKE you get off your ass, and see outside or a second while you go vote. I mean, your picking the president of the United States of America for God's Sake... least you can do is drive down there and punch out a card.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

I'm all for freedom of ttnet vitamin speech and allowing rent a car game makers to put whatever they want in games, but there's one thing about this app that has me scratching my head.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but from araç kiralama the previous article araba kiralama on this I gathered that players can use Google maps in-game to find the other (real-life?) dealers in their area.  If this is the case, has travesti anyone considered what's stopping someone from using this app to actually move drugs between hands for reals?

But majority araba kiralama of their outrage araç kiralama stems from what it could DO TO children, not the content itself.  Talk to one of these people and you'll find they don't think any books kiralık araba should be banned from children.  Mention American Psycho and they talk about kiralık araç the redeeming value of using imagination to construct a story.  Reading, no matter what the content, is largely viewed as a consequenceless activity for people of any age.  The reason why I mention American Psycho is because of the content itself.  Gaming never has and likely never will have any scenes where someone has sex with a severed head.  Not gonna happen.  Yet despite this, they'll fight tooth and nail to protect their children from two boys kissing in Bully but whatever they read is harmless... yeah.

The entire arguement is kiralık oto based upon a social normality inflicted by luddites who can't figure out the controls for Halo so it's frightening and terrifying and obviously the cause of youth violence on the rise even though, in reality, it's in decline (which is actually a HUGE suprise given minibüs kiralama the economies status).  In  a perfect world, we would have parents that actually parent.  The idea of sales restrictions on media on oto kiralama any form to accomidate parental unwillingness to get involved with their child's life is the real problem to me.  Here I am, 32 years old, and being held up at a self-scan rent a car needing to show ID before I can buy a $10 M rated game all because Soccer Momthra can't be bothered to look at the crap Billy Genericallystupidson does in his free time.  It's too hard for her, so I have to suffer?

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Because no study in football has been conducted without also looking into the positive aspects, rather than just the positive ones.

So anyone who says that games are completely harmless fun is obviously unaware to the geeks who can't hold down a social life, but clearly, this isn't true of all gamers, its the same with booze, one of the more social accetable bad habits, nearly everyone drinks but only a small percent of those people go on to comit DUI.

Another thing here, I see "unconsitional" thrown alot around here, and I also see the violent negative reaction that it is met with almost everywhere, but in this case i feel that the reaction is unjustified, for what I can make out what many in the anti-video game are trying to do is introduce laws which say that you can't be a 12 year old and walk into a store and buy GTA, and I whole heartily support them in this measure, and if you really feel that your, or your kids rights are being violated, buy it for your kids, really its that simple, the state deems that content A is not suitable for people a below a certain age and believe that the state is wrong in this conclusion, then by all means, buiy your son GTA, if you happen to be said son, I don't beleiev that as a child that you have the power to make a informed decesion and that the power of state and parent makes that decesion for you.

Did Jack Thompson write that?  So full of lies.  I should know, I have a version of Scarface and several GTA games, and oh yeah, none of which are online either.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

My kingdom for an edit button, my bad, GTA IV is multiplayer online, single player not so much though, and thats the only deal online, Scarface, not online, and I don't think any of those other listed games are either.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

That's the news for you, wierd and underinformed.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

In my view, if a game is released with content cut, then for all intents and purposes that game has been banned.  If it doesn't appear on store shelves in its original version then that original version has been banned.  People can pretend that censorship doesn't happen in the US, but when developers are forced to cut content to get a rating that allows the game to be profitable, then that is censorship.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

To me, edited /= banned (yeah, I know, I can't do the correct symbol), especally if you can still play it.  True, they're edited (unfortunly) but you're still able to play them.  To me, being banned means that you can't play them, so I still don't think that any of those are banned.

If anything should be banned, it should be that rediculous (and unnessacary) AO rating.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

haha i say we can also count "Duke Nukem Forever" as banned too. cuz its pretty much become a myth. its not coming out and has been unofficially banned based on a lack of it actually being created

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Maybe they ment United Kingdom?

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

None of them are banned here in the UK either

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Any chance that something like this could be picked up by an international free-speech advocacy group? Not just because it's GTA, but the way that the Thai government seems so quick to point fingers without hardly looking at the evidence.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

HOLD IT!

"The Guy Game" was  banned because it
contained pornographic images of a 17 year old.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

ooooo shit! we have a winner. hes right, that is the only game to be banned in the us.  that i can think of, anyone else have one?

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Games banned in USA??? I thought there was only Manhunt 2 the original AO version that was banned last year. lol and come on, 300: the Videogame? What, so people can see the movie but not play the game??? Like I kinda thought, the Tai press are just as stupid as FOXNews and totally miss-informed and only out there for media attention at least there is one person who goes into more detail about the individual and NOT sayin that Videogames are entirely to blame sad thing is, no one would want to listen to the only smart person in Tiland...

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Manhunt 2 was not banned in the US. It was classified as AO, and the console makers themselves refuse to carry AO games. This is completely different from the governemnt outright banning sale of the game alltogether. The AO thing is a problem though, if the ESRB was corrupt (and  I don't think they are), they could unofficially ban console games by rating them AO.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

The US is probably the most lax when it comes to regulating/banning games for violent content. Where did they get the idea that the US game industry would favor banning 10 games -some of them popular and made huge sales? I have three of the 10 games mentioned and they're still in good standing.

I wouldn't trust these guys to run a puppy store, blatantly making lies in order to justify their actions.

Does anyone now think it's a good idea to let more young-uns run our governments? Not totally, though, but in certain respects. Forget the "no professional experience" excuse. We have some REAL WORLD experience on media, and can school anyone older than us as long as our understanding of media trumps theirs. You don't have to wait until your 40's or 50's to take a national official position.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

I knew that EB Games I got God of War from looked shady... I mean, who puts two EB Games in the same mall?

Seriously though, who does that?

And yes to the Thai person wanting to come to the US. Anyone want to start a fund?

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

They do the same thing with Starbucks, like this mall I sometimes go, to it has a Starbucks in the Barnes and Noble and a standalone Starbucks.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Interestingly, while God of War was banned, they seem to have found God of War 2 acceptable.  Dumbasses.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Govt just have no clue what they are doing and try to imagine a PM who is as old as your grandpa running  a country and have no idea about games at all I mean the Culture Ministry just run by old people who just have no idea about games at all and you can read earlier that they already approved GTA I mean WTF!!!

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Great... How do I apply for US Citizienship? I had enough with the political baffoons over here...

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

On another note:

"I don't think excessive playing of the game is the sole cause. There must be other causes too," she said. "His friends told me that [his personality] had changed."

Anyone care to bet this will be interpreted as "the game changed his personality" rather than the correct "he was developing problems independent of the game"?

Really it sounds a little like a mind deteriorating due to addiction, depression, or some other clinical problem. Which is not something that is a game or book or movie's fault.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

*sigh* Okay for the clueless, they are claiming the games are banned in the U.S. ("paragons of civil rights, free speech, etc") as a justification for their bans. After all, the average Thai citizen is going to think, "Well, if they banned it in the U.S., a ban here must be ok."

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

And don't forget that the average clueless American soccer mom is likely to read this, believe it 100% and never bother to interupt her tightly maintained schedule of dropping the kids off at school, screwing the poolboy/plumber/gardener/personal trainer all afternoon, then picking up the kids at 3 PM.

Sarcasm aside, most parents won't bother to fact check any of what was said and follow the group like a pack of lemmings.

sounds a little too much like 1984 to me

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Gamerankings only show one entry for a game based on 300 (A PSP one) and it's not called "The Videogame"...

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

"300: The Video Game"

If I remember correctly that game was only avaliable on the GBA and it was awful in terms of gameplay and graphics.

Wow...that...I mean I know governments have been known to fabricate stories in the name of propaganda in attempts to try to justify their reasons for control of their people...but in today’s connectivity, dont you think that someone on their committee would have went "Um...banned really? cuz I coulda just swore that walmart.com has these for sale...on sale!" ...UNLESS!! They emailed JT in search of reasons to ban games:

"Well these games should be banned and will be once my case is won and I become the president of the US, so yes, they are banned, at least in my world."

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Sheesh... and i thought Thompson liked to make things up... these guys are making up bans that never existed... that's HIS job.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Wow, and I thought our media sucked at fact checking.

Resident Evil 4?  Never knew I spent so many hours playing a game that was banned in the US.  Strange, you would think GameStop wouldn't have them all out in a display case if it was illegal to sell them...

And what is this game "Killer" that they cite?  I've never heard of a game simply called "Killer".  Are they refering to Killer 7?

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Killer?  Killer 7 perhaps?

Also, GP... is Night Trap considered banned?  I could have sworn there was a big todo about that title and Tipper Gore claimed some form of success.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

The game Night Trap led to the creation of the ESRB. because the stupid politicians that had never even seen the game thought the point of the game was to "Rape and Kill Sexy Co-Eds."

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

What about Lucifer's Realm?  It was a text-and-graphic adventure in the early 1980s for Apple and Atari home computers.  For years there were rumors that it was banned in the U.S. but I've never been able to definitively confirm this.  I have, however, bought European-release copies from people overseas.  Have yet to find a U.S. packaging though (different packaging and cover art).

For those curious, the game's plot involves you dying in a hospital and going to Hell, where you meet people like Stalin and Hitler.  The game's author (the utterly demented Jymm Pearson) passed away about a decade ago.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

I can't speak for some of those games...but I wasn't aware that RE4, God of War, Hitman, or Grand Theft Auto were banned in the United States.

Methinks this news agency needs better fact checkers.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

More likely that news agency is disregarding facts in favor of building support for an agenda.

Re: New Details on Bangkok GTA Case; Thai Press Blames "Games

Who needs fact checkers when more than likely no one will speak out against you?
