Media accounts of Saturday's murder of a Bangkok cab driver have caught the attention of a Filipino blogger who fears GTA-inspired violence.
Perhaps more interesting,however, is a brief glimpse into the Filipino game piracy scene offered by the Pinoy Biscuits blog:
Did you know that Grand Theft Auto pirated discs are selling like hot cakes in the Philippines? Go to Greenhills, San Juan you'll be able to buy a bootleg/pirated copy of the whole Grand Theft Auto series.
A time bomb is just waiting to explode in the Philippines. Lawmakers in the Philippines aren't that serious yet when it comes to video games, it's always too late as in the case of almost all other cases here in the Philippines.

The guy's an idiot. Filipinos have bigger things to worry about than get involved in a JT-esque affair. MILF, oil price hike, corruption, the Catholic Church, birth control, etc. Fact of the matter is, if the "time bomb" happens really exists, humans would be extinct 5 yeas after the first Charlie Chaplin movie.

Funny, after seeing the other NSFW material that's being sold over at Shoppesville in Greenhills, San Juan (porn, adult movies, man-porn, R-rated movies, Manhunt 2), it makes my head spin as to WHY the hell this blogger decided to single out GTA4. Bandwagon indeed.
And he forgot to mention Quiapo or Makati Cinema Square. Talk about ignorance.
As to our other more pressing concerns: The president refused to repeal our E-VAT, food prices are going up, and several offices here have shut down due to financial shortages. Gee - and games are STILL what people think will cause violent behavior here?

Sadly most that are driving this issue are doing so for... um to be polite.... misplaced reasons. Games in general and GTA in particular get the blame for things that those that do the actions refuse to accept responsibility for.. Ie the "Devil made me do it" bit.
Yes it is true games do sometimes make kids think they can (or should) do a thing that is normally unacceptable. This is not however new. Aside from Music, movies, books, comics etc etc having shared that same blame at one point or another. Seems the answer here is to NEVER address the issue. It is always the fault of an outside thing never the person.
Sigh. From the way they talk one could almost expect an army of GTA zombies to arise and take over a few countries

First of all, GTA didn't make that guy stab a cabbie in Thailand. But for the sake of argument, let's say it did. That's one guy out of millions. A statistical anomaly, as JT himself would sometimes agree with. Yet this guy seems to think that every single GTA gamer is going to go on a mass murdering rampage. Does anyone honestly think that's even a possibility?

Laws are made to punish, not prevent. Punish the disturbed for committing crimes. If they are disturbed they wouldn't follow laws anyway. You cannot make a law that bans GTA games and expect crime to go down. If a disturbed criminal doesn't copy GTA something else will become the motive. The source of the content is irrelevant, and anything else becomes irrelevant, when you have a sick mind.

I agree. If someone commits a crime, that someone had mental issues to begin with and no video game or movie or music would have affected his mental state.
I mean come on guys. If someone is going to point the blame at video games because he killed someone or robbed someone and he says the video games made me do it, thats the newest excuse to plead the insanity bit. Its just an excuse. Video games are not influential, if you are killing or robbing or whatever, you had problems of your own to begin with. It did not start with video games. End of story.

Just to be nitpicky, the two most common reasons for crime are drugs and poverty. I guess the argument could be made that drug addiction is a mental problem, since the person has no control over their actions because they need their next fix. But poverty definitely isn't a mental problem. If your choice is starving, or losing your home, etc. and you see no hope for your future because no one is hiring anyone, does committing a crime seem that bad of an alternative?

To clarify a bit on my first point, laws just keep our society in check, from diving into anarchy. Politicians seem to think laws should drive our society closer to a utopia. While it's more optimistic, it's not the correct way to look at the value of the legal system. And it's why you have loopy bills and proposals to cover non-issues such as violent games in order to pick every last crumb they see wrong with our society.
