Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make Molotov Cocktails

August 7, 2008 -

In the wake of Saturday's highly publicized cabbie murder in Bangkok, there's more bad news for Grand Theft Auto.

Police in Fulton County, Georgia say that three teens arrested for a series of car arsons claim that they used GTA-inspired Molotov cocktails to set the vehicles ablaze.

WSBTV-2 reports:

Fulton County officials said they have arrested three teens and charged them with 57 felony counts in connection with a recent series of car bombings with Molotov cocktails in the city of Milton, north of Atlanta.

Officials said the teens -- ages 15 and 16 -- told authorities they learned "how to do it" from playing the video game "Grand Theft Auto."

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

I am really beginning to favor euthanasia for any criminal who uses video games as a scapegoat for their behaviour. Believe me, you start putting these little shits to death, and you'll see this bullshit cop-out go away pretty fast.

I'm being facetious, of course, but it's really getting out of hand. Mainly because senile lunatics like Jack Thompson continue to perpetuate it.

Utter Lies

Great, now they're not only arsonists who blame video games, but they're liars. Yes, GTA has molotovs. However, you can't make the molotovs yourself, they're premade for you. If anything films are more likely to have demonstrated how to make one as you usually get a close up of a rag stuffed in a bottle with a flammable liquid inside like vodka or gas. They're probably just trying to get out of it because they know people like Jack Thompson and Leland Yee exist.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

More BS from The media. Hell they even showed how to make a molotov on an Episode of Cops once.  So if this formula is the answer to all that is wrong in the world, the rise in Knife attacks could be blamed on World of warcraft.  Hell the Americas Army game has you sit through actual wepons "training" (videos) that show you how to operate, us and maintain a large aray of wepons, from hand guns to RPGs.  *sigh* God wont people just see the real problem, that parents just want someone else to raise there kids.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

In Soviet Russia, video games blame YOU!

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

YAY SOVIET RUSSIA!!!

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

lol.  I love those Soviet Russia jokes.

I wish I was the officer interrogating those kids about their crimes... I would laugh at any attempt they made to blame a video game and try to get them to spill the beans on what really made them do it.  But, unfortunately, that isn't the case.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

riiiight. because it would be impossible for them to learn a moitov is a bottle of jack with a rag stuck in it from any other sorce...

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Wow, I love the county where I live.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Plus everyone knows that if you want really good Molotov cocktails, zippo lighter fluid is a must.  The naptha burns like crazy and also inflicts chemical burns.

Additionally, you can add (as preivously mentioned) dissolved styrofoam for a better burn, or kitchen dishwashing detergent for a better "sticky" fire (similar to napalm).

Incidentally, I learned all these things from a combination of science classes (did chemistry at uni), random info on the internet and science shows where they blow cool shit up... = P

Having knowledge is one thing and it doesn't really matter where you get it from.  Doing something with the knowledge is your own personal responsibility.  The book didn't make you throw the molotov, the game didn't make you throw it, the class didn't make you throw it.

I hope the little bastards get everything coming to them.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Good tips. And don't forget: orange juice concentrate + gasoline = napalm. Watch the movie "Fight Club": it tells you that and how to make nitroglycerin. Cool shit....

...You know, I just realized something...our collective knowledge about explosives and incendiaries is kinda creepy....Oh, well...

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Actually I was going to bring this up. They leave out several key processes and ingredients. Still, with the amount of instruction they DO give you it would make more sense than blaming GTA. BUT GTA is the popular thing to blame these days.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

High proof liquor works as well, but it doesn't mix with styrofoam

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

You know where I learned to make molotov cocktails?  TV and movies form the late 80s and early 90s.

Another place you can learn is THE DICTIONARY:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Molotov%20cocktail

I think you'd have to be stupid to not be able to make these...  These kids just said GTA4 becasue they knew it would up their chance of being in the news.  Get caught? Might as well get famous!

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Actually, I would argue that you would have to be pretty stupid TO make them, considering what their purpose is. But your point is well taken.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

This really shows the ineptitude and laziness of police. If the cops in my town did this, I would move in an instant.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

So... you make molotov cocktails by buying them, fully functional from the word go, out of the back of a Rastafarian's car pending a phone call?

I wonder how long it took them to get their "like" rating up to 70%.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Saying Wikipedia told them how would be more beliveable frankly, given that they have an actual description on how it works.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Seeing as how molotovs in the GTA games are already pre-made, I doubt it.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

anybody can go online to figure out how to make certain thing GTA is not to blame?

anybody with a half of mind can figure this out,  people go online for a lot of thing for many different reasons. this is bull-s$&@*.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

... wowww

what is this world coming to when people say that a video game TAUGHT them to put gasoline in a glass bottle and toss it? i could have done that in my garage before i even heard of gta.... not that i'd want to >.>

Guess we have people like JT to thank for this kind of crap, because of people like him, criminals have no need to accept personal responsibility!

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

I think they are referring to the concept that playing GTA gave them the idea of doing it to real cars. Still doesn't justify what they did, lots of people will do things like that in GTA and not do it in real life, in fact, the vast percentage of people can do so.

My question is, where are the parents, why are kids playing an M rated game? Did the parents buy the game for the kids? Why didn't the parents watch their children's gaming habits, as the government and other experts repeatedly suggest?

I can't say for certain without more evidence, but it sounds to me like a bunch of kids left with a console as a 'digital babysitter', and no-one monitoring what they were doing or playing. If that console had been a TV and the parents had simply left them unsupervised like that, then no-one would even question the idea that the parents had neglected their children.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

It bears pointing out that in the games, applying molotov cocktails to cars tends to eventually bring about the attention of the police, usually already itching to shoot.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

what about in RE where bottle plus gas = molotov?

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

So they collected a lot of hidden packages and then found the Molotovs on their front porch?

Frankly you don't even manually light Molotovs in GTA, much less learn how to make one.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Can't you walk around with a lit Molotov for ages in GTA as well? A surefire recipe for losing your hand in real life...

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

I call bullsh*t on this one. If they said that the new Alone in the Dark taught them then they might have a very, very lame leg to limp on. How hard is it to put a piece of cloth in a bottle and light it?

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

I wasn't aware making a molotov was as easy as snatching the floating item out of thin air.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

I don't even remember them being in the two I played...vice city and San Andreas...

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

They were in San Andreas alright. In one mission yo uhad ot use them to burn down a house that a crooked cop pays you to burn.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

pfff tools, and gta never goes into detail on how to make a molotov it only ever lets you use them

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

So when I was tossing Molotov Cocktails(Petrol Bombs) at Police cars 15 years ago in Belfast, I learnt it from GTA also...  *ahem*...

When I knocked up that chick a few years ago...  Yep, GTA...

Remember when all those people went to war in the 40's?  Oh Yeah... GTA made them do it!

zzzz

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Which side of the conflict were you on?

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

I believe everyone was on the loosing side during the troubles.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Yeah, dosn't matter which "side" i was on, saying that part of my life, and thankfully many other peoples lives, is over.  Surprised GTA hasn't been blamed on a few more bombings and arsons then it already has...

pretty much from my recollections of it.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

oh FFS.

you can USE molotovs in Gta, you can USE a plane, you can USE a machine gun. It DOESNT TEACH YOU IN ANY WAY HOW TO MAKE THEM.

tha fact that a molotov is a bottle, a fuse and something that burns means it hardly needs a video game to work out.

Its like saying gta TAUGHT me how to punch somebody.

FFS this is the problem with loud mouthed ASS hats like JT making so much noise and NOBODY in the game industry coming out to shout them down. Just us defending it. well its only gonna get worse. No smoke without fire is what ppl think.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Yeah, sounds like they are looking for the 'Get out of Jail' card by using Videogames because they don't want to take responsibility for their actions.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

That's one of my greatest fears as of late.  I mean, once you starting saying that video games can take the blame instead of the person who actually did the crime, soon you'll have people who never even touched a game in their lifetime can scream "THE GAME MADE ME DO IT!" and get away with anything.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Well hopefully that police in that city/area have a good computer forensics lab that can go through their systems and prove rather they played said games, how often played, etc or the more likely what websites visited to make a bomb, etc.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

I've played every GTA aside from GTAIV and the GBA game and I don't recall any directions in how to make one, did either of those two tell someone how to make a molotov cocktail?

Not like making one is something that's a hard to find secret. I don't need a game to find that out nor do I even have to look it up, it's pretty damn easy to make.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

I don't recall anything in GTA that atcually gives you a how-to on molotov contstruction.

I do happen to smell two things. The distinct aroma of BS and stupid kids trying to weasel their way out of as much trouble as they can.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Does GTA 3 ever go into specifics on the inner workings of a molotov or does it just let you use them?

---------------------------------------------------- Debates are like merry go rounds. Two people take their positions then they go through the same points over and over and over again. Then when it's over they have the same positions they started in.

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Thats the thing, the game never "teaches" you how to make one.

You just find 'em, and toss 'em.

This is another clear case of "Grand Theft Auto made me do it".

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Aren't Molotov cocktails really easy to make? I thought they were just alcohol, a rag, and fire. Are they claiming that they didn't know how to throw a bottle before playing the game?

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

Next week - "Teens arrested after Gamepolitics.com teaches them how to make molotov cocktails":)

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

hahaha ive honestly learned more about how to make a molotov simply through the last few comments then anything close to what GTA could have taught me. and i doubt that any of the people here who already knew these things figured them out through GTA. this is one of the most ridiculous blames on video games i have ever heard of.

just wait, video games will cause cancer soon. youll see

Re: Teenage Arson Suspects Say GTA Taught Them How to Make

simplist form yeah, I learned that when I was a kid. We used them to for a controlled burn back of underbrush.

MonteThough from a business side, i would agree with the article. While it would be smarter for developers to slow down, you can't expect EA, Activision or ubisoft to do something like that. Nintnedo's gotta get the third party back.02/28/2015 - 4:36pm
MonteThough it does also help that nintendo's more colorful style is a lot less reliant on graphics than more realistic games. Wind Waker is over 10 years old and still looks good for its age.02/28/2015 - 4:33pm
MonteWith the Wii, nintnedo had the right idea. Hold back on shiny graphics and focus on the gameplay experience. Unfortunatly everyone else keeps pushing for newer graphics and it matters less and less each generation. I can barely notice the difference02/28/2015 - 4:29pm
MonteON third party developers; i kinda think they should slow down to nintendo's pace. They bemoan the rising costs of AAA gaming, but then constantly push for the best graphics which is makes up a lot of those costs. Be easier to afford if they held back02/28/2015 - 4:27pm
