Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

August 11, 2008 -

Over the past week there has been much written about accused Thai killer Polwat Chinno (at left, supposedly re-enacting his crime for investigators).

Police in Bangkok claim Chinno's alleged murder of a taxi driver was sparked by his playing of Grand Theft Auto.

On that score our attention was caught by this excerpt from yesterday's edition of The Telegraph

After the stabbing, [Chinno] tried to steal the taxi with the dead driver in the back seat, but did not know how to drive. Neighbours in Soi Jaran Sanitwong in central Bangkok called police after Polwat constantly pressed on the horn as he reversed into a dead end. When police arrived Polwat had locked himself in the car.

...all of which begs the question:

If Grand Theft Auto supposedly trained this 19-year-old man to kill so effectively, how could it be that it didn't train him to drive very effectively? After all, we'd estimate (conservatively) that GTA players spend at least 25% of their game time cruising around the series' open environments in a wide array of vehicles.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

Since when does someone need a game to learn him how to rob someone?

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

Since Pong.  No I'm kidding, it's actually been since Red Rover.  (Hey, Redmess just said game)

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

YOU'RE WRONG DENNIS!!!!

it's 50%! most players spend at least 50% of the time in vehicles (mostly cars)... if they're just playing around and not finshing the missions, then it'll shoot to as high as 90%!

and don't get me started how a SINGLE person is suppose to drive a tank and FIRE it's cannon giving it a speed boost! it's complicated and i have to get all the paperwork and diagrams out!

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

I call BS.  You can't lock the door in GTA, once the cops gets to the door your busted.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

Nobody ever locks their car anyway in the GTA series, even the parked ones. You can easily swipe a parked car and drive away in it.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

You obviously havent played GTA 4, people do lock their cars and its rather annoying:)

Anyway, GP is simply trying to point out how stupid people sound when they try to claim that GTA trains them to do violent things. Its been said many times already, GTA does not train people to kill. And if you think it does then you need to quit being a twat and focus on the world's real problems.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

I'm far more interested by the pre-meditation. That, all by itself, goes against the evidence that critics are aiming at Video Games. This was planned, you might kill someone in a drive-by like the old gangster movies, you might kill them with a Sniper rifle like in Leon, but if you sat down and conciously decided to use a weapon, knowing that it was illegal, then it is you that has broken the law, with forethought.

The concept of a pre-meditated, planned attack, whilst consistent with school shootings in the US, are actually far removed from the concept of 'Short periods of aggression after playing', which is the best that game-research has actually been able to come up with.

The saddest part is, censors are willing to let the killing continue because they 'don't have enough evidence', when they know the truth is that they are clinging onto a scapegoat in the hope that something terrible enough will happen that they can pull a Thailand, and start banning stuff in the pretense of protecting people before anyone has a chance to react.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

Try doing any of the missions on any GTA game and not crash into any cars in the process. Kinda hard to do that when you've got a 2-6 star wanted level with everybody on your ass constantly.

THANK GOD HE WAS PLAYING GTA!!

If the kid was weak-minded or whatever - enough to mimic GTA and kill a Taxi driver, let us be thankful he wasn't watching a movie like SAW, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, Star Wars, - MANY MANY more people would have wound up dead!!

Or he could have spent his time reading books - like Oliver, and started up a ring of theft using children! Or perhaps he could have read a Hitchcock novel, got a job at a hotel and slaughtered innocent women!

So perhaps it was best he was playing GTA, huh?

Re: THANK GOD HE WAS PLAYING GTA!!

Or worse than that, he could've been playing a combination of Grand theft Auto AND Crazy Taxi.

Then he would've been driving his taxi onto crowded sidewalks thinking the pedestrians will magically jump out of the way, and then ram it through mailboxes telephone booths crates, and the like.

Or he could've stolen a truck and imitated burnout.

---------------------------------------------------- Debates are like merry go rounds. Two people take their positions then they go through the same points over and over and over again. Then when it's over they have the same positions they started in.

Re: THANK GOD HE WAS PLAYING GTA!!

lol Father Time, I'm lol.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

Two points to the GTA series: Drive and Shoot. Which also brings up the question, why didn't he just shoot the cabbie? But no, video games ARE NOT TRAINING SIMULATORS!

I didn't learn to drive by playing Mario Kart

I didn't learn to fly by playing Star Fox

I didn't learn to kill by playing GTA.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

Do a Barrel Roll!

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

Yeah, it's kinda too bad though.

Then they could come up with a game that's like a "Grow a Brain" or "Get a Clue" simulator. It would be most beneficial to Politicians and Special Interests, indeed.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

I have to agree with Master_E though.  I think the point is that as much of a leap as it is to get them to drive is as much as it is for other things.  My question is, how many times was the cabbie stabbed?  If only once or twice, I claim the game had no part at all because he knew where to stab as well, but if it stabbed many times, it may have...    Either way, you have to be screwed up to make that leap to be willing to kill someone, and you see just as violent of things on TV and in movies today.

As always, I blame the parents.  Up until the kid is 21, I blame the parents, that is unless the kid somehow got mixed into a crazy cult like scientology and ran away, but then it is the parents fault for letting that happen in the first place.

GP can we get  a conformation on the age of the kid?  I see 18 at some other sites.  I was wondering if he was almost 19, or if he was 19 and other news sites are saying 18 to make the new story more interesting.

Parents have a lot less control over their offspring than people think they do, there's really only so much a parent can do to shape their children. When it comes down to it, people are individuals, and some are just completely deranged.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

The reason it didn't teach him to drive effectively is because that wouldn't create enough of a panic to get the game banned.

Think about it. "Ban GTA, it causes you to drive properly!" doesn't have the same sense of fear as "Ban GTA, it causes you to kill people!"

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

I hate to say it, GP, but if anything, I'd say this SUPPORTS the teen's claim that he way copying GTA.  Driving a car with a controller doesn't really provide any experience at all on how to drive for real.  Stabbing, on the other hand, is fairly intuitive.  If the teen's motive had been auto theft, it seems more likely he'd have actually known how to drive.  If the teen was so divorced from reality as to commit murder to emulate a game, then it makes more sense that forward thinking wouldn't really be his strength.

That said, I don't blame GTA for this.  I blame a seriously deranged guy.  Copying stupid things in popular media DOES happen, but isn't new or unique to video games.  I'm not a movie fan, so I don't remember the title, but there was a movie in which football players (I think) lay on the center line of a road for some reason or another.  Real people were hurt emulating that.

I'm not going to say Chinno WAS emulating GTA, but your question, "How could it be that it didn't train him to drive very effectively?" is completely off-base.  Guitar Hero might encourage a player to take up music (and in some cases, has), but it's certainly not training them.

I'd like to express clearly that I don't believe violent games make people violent.  But stupid people have emulated things they shouldn't for ages, and the point you make, GP, that not knowing how to drive implies GTA had nothing to do with this, is fallacious.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

So pressing Y teaches you how to carjack somone, how?

Rapidly pressing A is suppose to teach my legs "pump faster", how?

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

Just for trivia's sake, the movie you're referring to was called, The Program.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

I agree that GTA is not a driving trainer, and Guitar Hero is not a guitar trainer... but do you somehow think that GTA is a stabbing trainer?  It doesn't teach you any technique about knife-fighting or killing, and as you said, stabbing is intuitive.  GTA won't make you a better knife fighter, and you don't need a video game to teach you that the pointy end goes into the other guy.

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

Does GTA have knifes? Swords yeah, Guns lots but I don't think I have ever seen a knife. Maybe it is in the new one?

Even if it is, is the picture quality really good enough to see which end you are holding?

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

In GTA4 the knife is one of two choices of melee weapon in single player (the baseball bat is the other), and your only choice in multiplayer, just throwing that out there.

But yeah, I agree that the claim that GTA "trains" people to kill, is ridiculous.  If even half of these crackpot theories about violent video games were true, I must have killed about 12 people so far without even knowing about it. >.<

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

There's a mission on GTA: San Andreas where you can do stealth kills with a knife...

Re: Thai Cabbie Killing: We Have To Ask...

I don't think GP's point is that GTA had nothing to do with this incident... but that, since anti-gaming propaganda generally dictates that these games teach people everything they need to know to pull off crimes (for example, the recent story that GTA taught some kids exactly how to make molotov cocktails), it's funny that this man had no idea how to even start doing something that would emulate one of the game's main gamplay elements.

And as far as the act of stabbing goes... you don't exactly need to be shown how to do that in a videogame to figure out the proper mechanics of it...

Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm

MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm

quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
