Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

August 29, 2008 -

While E3 bashing has quieted with the passage of time, new comments by famed game designer Will Wright have driven another nail into the show's coffin.

In an interview with gamesindustry.biz, Wright likened E3 to a zombie - and not in a positive, Resident Evil fashion:

It almost feels like a zombie at this point; it's the walking dead. It's such an abrupt end to what was E3, which had been this huge escalating arms race.

I understand why they really pulled the plug on the big E3. Looking at the amount of money a company like EA would spend on it, it was ridiculous amounts of money just to be present and competitive with everyone else, so I think they were looking for a way to sign the arms treaty and de-escalate the whole thing.

Right now we're in this kind of dicey, do we have an event, what event is it, which one do we go to? I think we're in an uncomfortable transition zone when really the real E3 died a couple of years ago.

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

I'm all for freedom of ttnet vitamin speech and allowing rent a car game makers to put whatever they want in games, but there's one thing about this app that has me scratching my head.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but from araç kiralama the previous article araba kiralama on this I gathered that players can use Google maps in-game to find the other (real-life?) dealers in their area.  If this is the case, has travesti anyone considered what's stopping someone from using this app to actually move drugs between hands for reals?

But majority araba kiralama of their outrage araç kiralama stems from what it could DO TO children, not the content itself.  Talk to one of these people and you'll find they don't think any books kiralık araba should be banned from children.  Mention American Psycho and they talk about kiralık araç the redeeming value of using imagination to construct a story.  Reading, no matter what the content, is largely viewed as a consequenceless activity for people of any age.  The reason why I mention American Psycho is because of the content itself.  Gaming never has and likely never will have any scenes where someone has sex with a severed head.  Not gonna happen.  Yet despite this, they'll fight tooth and nail to protect their children from two boys kissing in Bully but whatever they read is harmless... yeah.

The entire arguement is kiralık oto based upon a social normality inflicted by luddites who can't figure out the controls for Halo so it's frightening and terrifying and obviously the cause of youth violence on the rise even though, in reality, it's in decline (which is actually a HUGE suprise given minibüs kiralama the economies status).  In  a perfect world, we would have parents that actually parent.  The idea of sales restrictions on media on oto kiralama any form to accomidate parental unwillingness to get involved with their child's life is the real problem to me.  Here I am, 32 years old, and being held up at a self-scan rent a car needing to show ID before I can buy a $10 M rated game all because Soccer Momthra can't be bothered to look at the crap Billy Genericallystupidson does in his free time.  It's too hard for her, so I have to suffer?

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

#1 Dennis, where in the heck did you find that picture.

#2 E3 should be a escalating arms race.   Make this industry competitive on so many levels...

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

The only problem I have with the "escalating arms race" iodea, is it rapidly shuts down smaller players from being able to compete in it.

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

Everyone has to earn their keeps.  Though I own a small game company, I rather it be hard as hell and earn my keeps.  You are forced to always thing of your gamers, always make great products, and you develop a much better/stronger fan base when you earn it over getting in easy.

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

Personally, I'll care about how much E3 sucks/pwns when they open it to consumers. Until then it's just a rapid series of press releases.

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

Instant, LEGENDARY Win.

They do need to open it to consumers.

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

There's already an event that's open to consumers that's more or less taken the place of E3. PAX.

I'm there now, posting this while I wait for the PC Hardware panel to start.

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

I miss the old E3. I never got a chance to go there, and now it's more dead than anything that has ever lived and died.

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

sad, but true brother... E3 collapsed like the patriots in the super bowl!

Jesus Jack Jones Thompson told me to do it!

Jesus Jack Jones Thompson loves you, so kill for his amusement so we can get money for the new "People's Temple of Jesus Jack Jones Thompson"

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

*sigh* I miss booth babes.

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

The internet killed E3 long ago.

E3 used to be the place where you'd hear big name releases. Nowadays this info is leaked, absorbed and forgotten months in advance. You can't save an announcement for E3 to preserve hype these days. E3 thus serves no purpose for big name developers.

If E3 is to continue, it will shift focus onto smaller, relatively unknown developers. 'Cept they work by word-of-mouth and usually can't afford to set up a booth amidst intense competition.

So E3 really doesn't serve a purpose for everyone. Information these days spread too quickly.

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

Its become too corperateized with no real focuses as to what it wants to do, it needs to be redone first focus on making sure that the people of the industry from pion's to CEOs that all their meetings are in or around the convention center, then make sure the layout of booths is solid, then allow them to whatever they want within reason with booth babes and then if they get out of line fine them up the ass so you have some money for next years convention, then allow gamers in at 25$ a head a day or 100$ for as long as it lasts, have VP gamer ranks that are 500$ for as long as it lasts or 100 for 1 day.

Open up ye anus to new ideas, for Goateas is upon you!!

Re: Will Wright: E3 is "the Walking Dead"

Anything about E3 always sparks up the debate about whether the "old" or the "new" format was better and which one was more appropriate for the whole intent of E3, being a trade show and all.

But you have to admit, when it was a big show it at least stood out among the crowd.  The stripped-down version just does not seem any more relevant than any other convention/trade show.  And when coupled with it's late calendar date it starts to become even less relevant.  Just take a look at this year's E3.  If the bulk of the companies there are only going to take the time to announce games we've known about for months and cite sales figures, what's the point?  The former has little impact since the press/public already knows about the game(s) and the latter can be sent out to gaming journalists via email, meaning there's no point in holding a big conference for it unless they want to do something akin to financial masturbation (which is entirely possible...).

In my opinion there's really only two ways to make E3 matter again.

Option 1: Keep the current format but hold the show much earlier in the year.  That way E3 will be known for big game announcements again.

Option 2: Do something like the Tokyo show and have a day or two open to the public.  First few days will be press and trade only, then let us unwashed masses have a go at it.  Word of mouth can be just as good, if not sometimes better, than any gaming press.

TechnogeekIf the developer were male there wouldn't have been a "conversation" in the first place.10/19/2014 - 2:27am
Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm
ZippyDSMleeWonderkarp: You might be able to if you had a PS4 controller.10/18/2014 - 1:00pm

Matthew Wilsonthe sad thing is there are trolls on both sides of this. people need to stop acting like their side is so pure.10/18/2014 - 12:19pm
MechaTama31So, only speak out on a scandal that hasn't attracted trolls? I wouldn't hold my breath...10/18/2014 - 10:49am
MonteI feel like GG just needs to die. The movement is FAR to tainted by hatred and BS for it to be useful for any conversation. Let GG die, and then rally behind the NEXT gaming journalism scandal, and start the conversation fresh.10/18/2014 - 10:33am
quiknkoldand we dont have a Dovakin to call a cease fire10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldThe whole thing is Futile. Both sides are so buried deep in their trenchs that there isnt a conversation. Its just Finger Pointing, Name Calling, Doxxing, Threats. there needs to be a serious conversation, and GG isnt it.10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
Matthew Wilsonwhile he focused on gg, he did call out both sides crap.10/17/2014 - 7:18pm
