11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

September 4, 2008 -

Okay, so a pre-teen probably shouldn't be playing Grand Theft Auto.

But, as MyWebTimes reports, 11-year-old Audrey Plique's GTA gaming sessions may have saved her family's life after their car rolled over on the night of August 27th. Karen Norris, Audrey's mom, explains:

She just knew, from playing 'Grand Theft Auto.' She saw on there that when a car rolls over, it can blow up. She knew that could happen to us...

She showed the kind of bravery and courage you don't expect from an 11-year-old. She stayed composed. She sounded upset, but she knew the things she had to get done to help her parents and her siblings.

Audrey was just glad that she was able to save her family. It's unclear whether she saved her progress in GTA.

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

There are no negative effects from kids playing M-rated games.  None.  Not a single one.

Supporting the ESRB is an abdication of parental responsibility to suspend your irrational and emotional gut reactions to things and actually learn about how things might affect your child.  Instead, people just assume the ESRB isn't full of shit.  Well, they are.  There has never been a rigorous scientific experiment that showed any long term negative effects from videogames.  The only legitimate studies at all show that videogames change your reactions to violent videos, but say nothing about real life.  The ESRB doesn't care about your kids.  They only care about making tons of money and keeping the publishers happy.  They don't care about pushing the envelope and presenting videogames as a legitimate artistic medium, they only care about the tens of thousands of dollars they get for each game rated and getting the platform holders to ban unrated or AO rated games so that they can continue to degrade our culture and insult our kids.

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

even if GTA hadn't had realistic exploding car curcumstances, it did prompt the girl to get her family out of he car.

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

"even if GTA hadn't had realistic exploding car curcumstances, it did prompt the girl to get her family out of he car."

...which is exactly the WRONG thing to do after an accident. You're supposed to stay IN the car until rescue vehicles arrive, unless the car is actually on fire.

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

That's something that people should do /regardless/ though.  If your family is in trouble, it's natural to want to help them.  If you don't want to help them or need a video game to teach you to do that, something's wrong.

If Grand Theft Auto had taught her the proper technique for pulling people out of an overturned vehicle, then it would be different.

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

GTA and reality hardly, if ever, walk hand in hand.  Seriously, everything in GTA makes cars blow up.  Even minor fender benders will.  The point that their car didn't blow up, yet again, proves Jack and other jackasses wrong in trying to say you can learn anything from GTA at all, ever.

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

awwwwww i wanted to go try to flip my car over and watch it go boom well no expolishon for me guess i have to go back to the real world

lol

GP, use the Magic Wand in Photoshop

And then tweak the tolerance level to how you want.  Zoom up the image, and then capture multiple areas if you are going for details in a screen capture.

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

lol maybe she was pulled them out so she can pick up the car and throw  it  as far as she can like the hulk

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

Don't you mean as far as The Hulk can? Because i doubt an 11 year old can throw a car very far. ;)

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

Nah. What she was really doing was pulling them out so that she could hijack the car. That is the only thing she could learn to do in GTA.

She would have to learn from the Superman game tp flip the car right side up before she could steal it

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

Agreed, I personally wouldn't like my kids to play M games until 13 or 14, assuming they matured like I did, but it was the parent's choice and ended up helping during an accident. Not that it necessarily saved any lives, but it still was courageous of her.

Kudos

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

Kinda telling that she had to play GTA to learn that cars can blow up when tipped over...

Well, better to learn it from there and not some hilariously crappy B-movie like Silent Night, Deadly Night 2.

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

Is that the one where this guy shot at a car with a hand gun and it rolled over and blew up?

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

Ah-HAAA! Proof positive that lessons learned from video games can be a good thing IRL.

Although I'm highly skeptical that a car could blow up just by turning upside-down, I agree with Zippy and commend her quick thinking in a possibly dangerous situation. Well done, Audrey!

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

i've learned a LOT of things from video games, from math, to history, and even medical sciences.

my fave thing being a Jefferson quote from Wing Commander 4 The Price of Freedom

"the price of freedom is eternal vigilance"

because i learned so much from my gaming (very few educational games at that) i actually SLEPT through my 11th grade year of school.

no joke i was TOLD to go back to sleep by my teachers when i woke up cause i could dispute their teachings (cause they'd ramble on about something they knew nothing about, but page "A" said something, and they never bothered to read page "B" to figure out the rest of the info :p  ) to such a fine letter "T" that they began to ask if i learned through osmosis and rathered i was asleep.

the only grade that suffered? my class participation was low, and lowered my grades, but i passed EVERYTHING with above average scores :p

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

If the ignition's on, it can.

Does this post make my butt look big?

No, Luke, I AM the Walrus

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

If the ignition is on, it can explode even WITHOUT the car being in an accident, but that doesn't mean it will - and it doesn't mean that getting out of the car is the safest thing to do - and that's the same after a wreck.  People who exit their car after a wreck are much more likely to get hit by traffic.  The fact is, you're much safer staying in the car after a wreck, unless there is a fire.  But the chance of there being a fire after a wreck is very small indeed.

The real world is not like the movies.  In movies cars explode because special effects folks put heaps of explosives in the car.  Manufacturers of real cars spend a lot of time making sure that gas tanks are well protected from the effects of collisions.

In your face, Jack Thompson!

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

Allow my prediction:

"Jack Thompson, Attorney and you're a moron.

I called it!  Minors are being sold the murder simulator GTA and their Parents are mentally molesting them with it!  Another kid gone rampant with violent intent caused the car to roll over after playing GTA!  It's the game industry that paid the media to portray this false, Godless claims of an 11 year old girl saving the lives of her family.  Everyone knows gamers are too desensitized to care about anyone's life!

I'm preparing to sue Take Two and the car manufacturers for conspiracy to sell porn to minors!

Is this a great country or what?

Jack Thompson, Attorney, figurativly speaking of course"

I guess it's pretty much settled that every gamer on Earth believes that either JT is insane or just likes being a d*ck.

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

nightwing2000,

He probably would also question the legality of either the 11 year old girl's, her parents', take two's, car manufacturers', or the car's loyalty oath.  Oh and he probably would also mention his 60 minutes appearance and/or the radical gay reverse vampire florida bar conspiracy

GP for the purposes of simple editing Paint shop pro 9 is easier to use IMO.

Getting poeple out of the car ASAP after a good wreck is kind of  important IMO

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

So did the car actually blow up?

No?

Hmm...

In all seriousness, the first thing you want to do is shut off the ignition.  Unless it's already on fire, a car is probably not going to explode.  If people are hurt, don't move them unless you have to.

Andrew Eisen

Re: 11-year-old Girl Saves Family, Credits GTA

Yeah, if they were unconscious of if they couldn't move, she probably did more to endanger them by moving them.  Cars don't usually spontaneously combust - even in a wreck.
