This picture just showed up in an e-mail from Jack Thompson.
There was no explanation, other than the subject line:
First feeder bands from Hurricane Ike hit Miami!
Color me confused. Is the man growing a sense of humor? Learning PhotoShop?
Maybe it's symbolism: the pole represents his law license. The hurricane is the Florida Bar and he's trying to hang on...
UPDATE: So it appears that Thompson may be preparing for a second career (you never know when you might need one of those)... as a weatherman.
In a followup e-mail Thompson claims that US news organizations are underreporting the upcoming Hurricane Ike because it's not as sexy as the recent Gustav, which threatened both New Orleans and the Republican National Convention. Even his BFFs at Fox are guilty, says Thompson (now is that any way to get air time?).

I work in law enforcement and my old boss was an attorney. She unfortunately treated her subordinates in the department like she treated opposing attornies. She would simply crush any dissent by any means necessary. Finally they sent in some independent evaluators and she was forced out of the department. Now she is back to practicing regular law and said the experience of being forced out of our department saved her life. The stress and unpleasantness made her re-evaluate things and calm down.
Maybe Jack needs to be disbarred to save his life. He couldn't let go of his "quest" and now that its being taken from him by force it might be less of a burden to him. Hopefully he continues to take himself less seriously.

Yes Jack, there are terrible hurricanes in the south east area of the United States. They happen every year so having in depth coverage of every single one is nuts. Dealing with hurricanes is something you signed on to when you moved to Florida. Where I live I have to deal with yearly floods, blizzards, and tornadoes. You don't see all of them with in depth news coverage even if they cause terrible damage. You know why? They are a yearly occurance. Pick your natural disaster and learn to live with it because every area of the country has one.

Let me begin with a few thoughts of my own.
Over the past few years, you have continued to harass us “video game thugs” because of your unorthodox views and your ideals that video games are at fault for killings and what not.
Does that really make any sense Mr. Thompson? If I were to play a video game such as Grand Theft Auto often, would that turn me into a killer? No, it doesn’t make any sense. I would ask you to stop your video game attacks because 1. Its not working 2. Its making you look more and more unprofessional 3. Its infringement of freedom of speech and 4. Its not worth it.
Your harassment of gaming communities and companies is getting old and should end. Do something that’s more worthy like be a criminal prosecutor rather than some lawyer who wants to end video games. Is that how you want to be remembered? The guy tried to censor everything? I wouldn’t.
I ask you, do you do this to get attention, for religion, or because in your eyes, it’s the right thing to do?
Stop using video games as excuses. People kill people Mr. Thompson, not video games. Games do not have subliminal messages in them nor do they try to influence people to kill. They are just a new form of entertainment, that has different variations, from realistic simulations to simply solving puzzles. If I were you I would go after drug problems in the USA. Not many people deal with that but maybe you can.
Also, don’t even think about threatening me with leagal action as I’m only expressing my opinion to you and pointing out the facts.

Everyone let's look on the bright side. Maybe he has finally realized that soon he won't be a lawyer any more and is just trying to find another job. Jack, crazy lying old guys don't make good meteorologists, it requires looking at data and evidence, and let’s be honest that isn’t something you are vary good at. I thought about it for a while and came up with some suggestions for jobs that might be good for you, although most of them you might be under qualified:

Wow. I always knew that there was no limit to what Jack'll do in order to get a little attention (negative or positive) but this is a whole new level. What's next? Photos of Jack wearing his underwear on his head?
The way I see it is that Jack is the crazy Bible-thumper uncle that the family always invites to reunions but never speaks of him in public. Love him or hate him, you cannot deny he has a certain style.

For a minute there, I thought he might have had us going. Just kinda screwing with us for the fun of it; but this "politics of weather" stuff smells faintly like something he would actually do. I have to wonder about the conceit of a guy that drops "press releases" on a personal whim. Imagine if everyone could do that, "restaurant ran out of coke, only pepsi, film at 11!"
I know what to make of it, I think we NOW need to stop covering a certain someone unless it is actually news-worthy.

Unfortunately, I have no idea. I haven't seen Thompson's press release so if he has a specific grievance beyond "it's underreported" I don't know what it is.
What I do know is that Hurricane Ike is all over the news and has feature stories at:

-The Weather Channel
-Fox News
-Reuters
-CNN
Hell, the Miami Herald has had a weather map with oodles of info on its front page all day. So, it's not like it's not being reported. But is it being under reported? Let's do a Google search:

Hurricane Gustav: 11,000,000 hits
Okay, so Gustav has certainly garnered more ink. Is it a conspiracy, news reporters playing favorites, or is it because Gustav has:
-been around a week longer
-made landfall five days ago
-killed 120 people

Gustav was also a category 4 storm when it hit land and could have picked up speed instead of dying out. It made a fair bit of air time this side of the Atlantic too as we were waiting to see if it was going to be as devastating as Katrina and if so how Bush was gonna handle THIS one.

If it happened to anyone else he could care less, but it's happening to him, so anything short fo worldwide coverage is under reporting.
I think his second career might be worse than his current. No... not a weatherman but politics. I mean if he gets disbarred how could he possibly still give video games some grief? Politics.
It isn't that odd of an idea either. Jack Kevorkian is running for congress as an Independent in Michigan's 9th district.
Call me crazy, but I think Jack should pursue a career in comedy. He has a natural nack for it to me, even if he's not really trying, cause it has often made me laugh about how serious he is about something. He can say absolutely ANYTHING with a straight face, it seems.
