British tabloid The Sun has laid the blame for a string of sexual assaults at the feet of Grand Theft Auto.
Under the headline Sex Beast copied Grand Theft Auto, the newspaper spins the tale of 19-year-old Ryan Chinnery (displaying his bling at left). In true tablod style, The Sun's prose is lurid:
A TEEN sex beast attacked four women in an imitation of violent computer game Grand Theft Auto, a court heard yesterday. Ryan Chinnery, 19, prowled streets in his car targeting females he thought were prostitutes after becoming obsessed with the video nasty...
And the court was told he may have been influenced by the virtual reality game, in which a character drives around on “missions” — including approaching prostitutes who can be beaten up. A copy of Grand Theft Auto was found at his home by police...
Prosecutor Eleanor Laws said Chinnery’s love of Grand Theft Auto “may go some way to explaining his attitude towards women”. She said: “Prostitutes in it can be subjected to violence. “There may be some connection with the defendant admitting spending a lot of time playing that game.”

In other words Jack will buy it. But I do have a very, very, very tiny mote of sympathy for Jack. If he truly does believe in his cause and not just the publicity, (which I'm convinced that the publicity is all he wants) then these felons are playing him like a harp. Video games aren't the problem. in GTA, just about everybody can be beaten up, not just prostitutes. Since they didn't specify which GTA game, I will have to assume the top-down view, first game of the series. Were there even prostitutes in that game? Much less any missions involving beating such criminals up (is prostitution illegal in Britian like it is here in the U.S.?) in any game of the series? At least these bozos didn't mention a "points" system of any kind. It sounds like Eleanor Laws is defending prostitutes, as opposed to all women. Way to represent your gender.

First off with the exception of one game every single GTA has taken place in the US (well technically all of them took place in fictional lands that were parodies of U.S. areas but still), and in the US prostitution differs, and as far as I know the only places where prostitution is legal are certain counties in Nevada.
Oh and where in the article does it talk about john getting arrested but prostitutes don't?
Oh and please explain me to how johns being illegal but prostitutes aren't makes ANY sense.

Even in those counties, you can't solicit it. You can't yell at every passerby "fuck for 100 bucks". There are guys on the streets who, at night, hand out magazines and fliers to men coming home from the bar that have phone numbers for local whores on them. These guys don't say a word to you, they just try and force their fliers into your hand.

What gets me is that it's always the prostitutes that get victimized when such people talk about these games. Somehow it's only the prostitutes that matter. But there are more than just hookers walking on the virtual streets. Wouldn't people be more concerned that you can beat up the other passers-by that might be coming home from an honest day of work? Or just a walk to the beach.

Have you all ready forgotten the people bitching and moaning about it encouraging players to kill cops (as if getting shot at was some form of encouragement). But don't fret in Spain there's all ready been people complaining that you kill cab drivers, so perhpas eventually we'll get someone shouting 'think of the random shmucks'.

You are so clued into flaming someone that you don't even consider such worthwhile professions as Psychologists, Doctors, Educators of any kind, Police Officers, Social Service Workers, and a myriad of other careers who make their living servicing those that you claim are only bled dry by our society.
It seems to me that an honest days work, in the previous posters definition, includes not breaking the law, which does exclude prostitution in the United States everywhere except Reno, Nevada (No, its not legal in Las Vegas). There are plenty of people forced into that profession, and I feel sorry for them, but there are numerous more who choose it willingly due to a lack of drive, innitiative, or more lucrative choices, and I feel next to no sympathy for them since they had another way. So you can color people like the previous poster fascist all you want, and I'll color you ignorant.
Where was I? Oh yes, the ACTUAL story. It's a crock, but do you expect anything more from the Sun? It's a tabloid at best, and should be considered an "entertaining" read more than a legitimate news source. Take it for what its worth guys, and take a deep breathe.

i worked as a nurse for quite a while, and right now i'm working on my diplom as social worker, so i guess i don't have to consider them. i'm one of them and so it's brandmarked into my consciousness.
