Capcom Frets Over Game Violence Backlash (RE5?) in Annual Report

September 12, 2008 -

Is Capcom worried about media and/or political backlash from its upcoming Resident Evil 5?

videogamer.com raises the question after flipping through Capcom's 2008 annual report. In the document, Capcom lists potential risks to its home and arcade-based operations.

Buried on page 46 is this nugget:

Some of our popular software titles have provocative graphics and text, such as violent and grotesque scenes. Accordingly, in the event of violent incidents and other criminal cases involving juveniles, we may be subject to a smear campaign by some sections of the mass media which often point out the correlation between crime and games.

Therefore, there is a risk that it may result in having an adverse effect on our business performance, corporate value and narrowed distribution channel under instructions by the relevant authorities.

GP: This is not likely related to RE5 specifically. We've seen similar disclaimers in other corporate reports. It's just good business practice (not to mention a legal requirement) to level with investors about potential risks.

Re: Capcom Frets Over Game Violence Backlash (RE5?) in Annual

I'm all for freedom of ttnet vitamin speech and allowing rent a car game makers to put whatever they want in games, but there's one thing about this app that has me scratching my head.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but from araç kiralama the previous article araba kiralama on this I gathered that players can use Google maps in-game to find the other (real-life?) dealers in their area.  If this is the case, has travesti anyone considered what's stopping someone from using this app to actually move drugs between hands for reals?

But majority araba kiralama of their outrage araç kiralama stems from what it could DO TO children, not the content itself.  Talk to one of these people and you'll find they don't think any books kiralık araba should be banned from children.  Mention American Psycho and they talk about kiralık araç the redeeming value of using imagination to construct a story.  Reading, no matter what the content, is largely viewed as a consequenceless activity for people of any age.  The reason why I mention American Psycho is because of the content itself.  Gaming never has and likely never will have any scenes where someone has sex with a severed head.  Not gonna happen.  Yet despite this, they'll fight tooth and nail to protect their children from two boys kissing in Bully but whatever they read is harmless... yeah.

The entire arguement is kiralık oto based upon a social normality inflicted by luddites who can't figure out the controls for Halo so it's frightening and terrifying and obviously the cause of youth violence on the rise even though, in reality, it's in decline (which is actually a HUGE suprise given minibüs kiralama the economies status).  In  a perfect world, we would have parents that actually parent.  The idea of sales restrictions on media on oto kiralama any form to accomidate parental unwillingness to get involved with their child's life is the real problem to me.  Here I am, 32 years old, and being held up at a self-scan rent a car needing to show ID before I can buy a $10 M rated game all because Soccer Momthra can't be bothered to look at the crap Billy Genericallystupidson does in his free time.  It's too hard for her, so I have to suffer?

Re: Capcom Frets Over Game Violence Backlash (RE5?) in Annual

Hopefully bussiness letters like these will provide the Big 3 and the ESRB to form their own civil lawsuit against the smear campaings of the US Politicians, FOXNEWS, JT and all the Family Groups that try to smear videogames for reasons like...rape in a game...that are simply not true. If companies like Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are going to take their bussiness seriously, they need to stand up for themselves and the gaming community that they represent and try to file a civil lawsuit against the people who are trying to spear their products. Plus the ESRB have been under allot of frie in the last 15 years since being formed and they need to have their voice be heard too and have the power to protect themselves against the people who smear them.

Re: Capcom Frets Over Game Violence Backlash (RE5?) in Annual

"Smear campaign?"  This is hilarious.  The video game industry and its lemmings at sites like this all claim that said "smear campaigns" increase sales.  Make up your minds, kiddies.

Secondly, what they really fear is civil and criminal liability for copycat killings.  Now THAT is a problem.  I'm preparing the suit against these morons as we speak.  Jack Thompson

Re: Capcom Frets Over Game Violence Backlash (RE5?) in Annual

Yes, they do increase sales, are you saying you consider this to be a good thing, because when people say that, they are pointing out how people like you are helping the sales of this game, and are usually implying that this is a bad thing to do?

And why are you assuming that we all agree with what Capcom have to say? Are you also incapable of reading the responses of other people, or even understanding the concept that we don't have to like, or agree with a game for it to have the right to exist? But then, that's the heart and soul of Freedom of Speech, you know, that right you are trying to destroy.

@ jack 'too dangerously stupid to be allowed outside guantanamo bay' thompson;

how about we propose harsh jail sentences for self-claimed moral crusaders, as they are directly responsible for encouraging mass murder, child abuse and racial hatred, far more than a copy of GTA4 ever could?

also, a suggestion to the mods; is there a way to cut off access from the anonymous proxy sites like btunnel.com which the retard lawyer here is using to evade his 60 something permanent ip bans? he really wouldn't know the meaning of the word 'banned' if it came up to him and beat his ugly face in with a Stop sign.

I know that such proxy sites bypass scripts, so if there was a script in the "Post comment" button that set a flag that's required to post, then such proxies would be unable to post

Re: Capcom Frets Over Game Violence Backlash (RE5?) in Annual

you really have no idea how a copycat crime works, do you, u? Whether the "source" exists or not, the crime will take place. The only difference is that if there's a source, the method will be copied. Otherwise, it will be generic or original. Either way, the perp is the only one at fault.

"Certainly, it can not be proven that a media depiction might stimulate an otherwise ordinary person to commit a crime. Although research has established the media's influence on some deviant behaviors, it has not established a direct causal connection between media stimuli and specific deviant behaviors apart from other variables appearing in combination. Simply because a media depiction is followed by the reoccurrence of a similar event does not indicate a connection. In some cases, alleged copycats have stated they knew nothing of the previous publicized incident... 'Mode' copiers were those who already intended to commit a crime and who received a method from the media event." - Dr. Cecil E. Greek

hell, parents who use the rod model to their children that violent behavior is acceptable.

It's cute that you think you'll still be a lawyer by next year.

Re: Capcom Frets Over Game Violence Backlash (RE5?) in Annual

I personally hope there is controversy because we have the right to slap the faces of misinformed idiots. I can't wait for the Fox News report. We all know that Fox News is going to report this game.

Re: Capcom Frets Over Game Violence Backlash (RE5?) in Annual

O noes I might think that all black people are zombies and go on a killing rampage.

Re: Capcom Frets Over Game Violence Backlash (RE5?) in Annual

The annual report should say "luckily, thanks to futile attempts by misguided cretins such as Jack Thompson, the right honourable Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sen. Leland Yee; our products have a continued presence in the mass media whilst there is little no danger of any attempted bans being succesful".

Controversy = boost in sales if it's organised by people who can't string together a sense of logic in their own beliefs, let alone organise a games ban.

Re: Capcom Frets Over Game Violence Backlash (RE5?) in Annual

I hope they don't censor the game.

"we may be subject to a

"we may be subject to a smear campaign by some sections of the mass media which often point out the correlation between crime and games."

It's the unfortunate truth. All of these "save the children" exclamations from JT and friends are nothing more than smear campaigns on forms of entertainment they don't like. They could have explained it more clearly however, and said that these idiots will point to an unproven alleged link between violent behaviour and games.

Re: "we may be subject to a

Yeah, the could, but this is a professional document and that would be borderline unprofessional.

It does suck that they even have to include such a statement in their reports.

Did they include anythign about racism?

Montetrolls are just at their absolute worst when it comes to women and feminist. You could bet good money that if the developer were male the trolls would be silent and the conversation would actually focus on the journalism.10/18/2014 - 9:18pm
MontePapa: Not the first time we've had a journalism scandals before, but the harassment never got close to this level; the difference with this scandal is that feminists are involved. Without the feminist angle, their would be A LOT less harrassment10/18/2014 - 9:15pm
Papa MidnightMonte: That's honestly rather short-sighted. As has been proven with other persons who have been targeted, if it wasn't Quinn, it would be someone else.10/18/2014 - 6:26pm
AvalongodI think that's part of what gives an esoteric news story like this real life...it taps into a larger narrative about misogyny in society outside of games.10/18/2014 - 3:29pm
Avalongod@Monte, well the trolls made death threats that came to police (and media attention). I think this is tapping into a larger issue outside of games about how women are treated in society (like all the "real rape" stuff during the last election)10/18/2014 - 3:28pm
WonderkarpZippy : Havent tried the PS4 controller. might later.10/18/2014 - 2:37pm
MonteSeirously, If Quinn was not involved and GG was instead about something like the Mordor Marketing contracts, the trolling would have never grown so vile and disgusting. There have been plenty of movements in the past that never sufferred from behavior..10/18/2014 - 1:57pm
MonteWe have seen scandel's before but the trolling has never been as vile as what we see with GG. Trolls usually have such a tiny voice you can barely notice them, but its like moths to a flame whenever femistist are involved.10/18/2014 - 1:53pm
ZippyDSMleeWonderkarp: You might be able to if you had a PS4 controller.10/18/2014 - 1:00pm

MechaTama31So, only speak out on a scandal that hasn't attracted trolls? I wouldn't hold my breath...10/18/2014 - 10:49am
MonteI feel like GG just needs to die. The movement is FAR to tainted by hatred and BS for it to be useful for any conversation. Let GG die, and then rally behind the NEXT gaming journalism scandal, and start the conversation fresh.10/18/2014 - 10:33am
quiknkoldand we dont have a Dovakin to call a cease fire10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldThe whole thing is Futile. Both sides are so buried deep in their trenchs that there isnt a conversation. Its just Finger Pointing, Name Calling, Doxxing, Threats. there needs to be a serious conversation, and GG isnt it.10/17/2014 - 7:37pm
quiknkoldI thought it was a good article. Jeff is right. I feel like GamerGate did destroy its message. I am for Ethics in game journalism, but man. so much hate. and its on both sides. I've seen some awful stuff spewed on twitter. Its a big reason why I exited..10/17/2014 - 7:34pm
