This evening the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric will begin a three-part feature called The Games Our Children Play.
Tech reporter Daniel Sieberg will be the point man for the series which airs at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time. The first installment will examine gaming's impact on kids:
Like it or not, 97% of teenagers play videogames. A Pew Study that will be released on Tuesday (see GP coverage) shows there's real value in them. It's not just entertaining shoot-'em-up.
On Wednesday Sieberg looks at Rock Band 2:
The latest installment in the wildly popular videogame series that is also changing the music business. We'll meet rocker Joe Perry and his son Roman, who introduced his dad to this new genre that's breathing new life into old bands…and bridging the generation gap between kids and parents.
Spore is the subject for Thursday's segment:
Spore... is considered one of the most ambitious computer games of all time. The object is to CREATE life, not destroy it. It's a game about evolution..where players start as spores and develop into creatures who build civilizations and explore space... It's educational and appealing to girls and families.
We're told that videos should be available on the CBS News website if you forget to program your DVR.
Comments
This surely will be an honest portrayal of video games...
Doubtful. At least they're trying though... what their agenda is, who knows.
I still have a sick feeling that this will boil down to "yeah..there are a few games...BUT LOOK AT THOSE SICK F***S OVER THERE! Always seems to be that way. And lets hope they don't try and pull up the JT BS lines that he's dropped over the years for part of it.
"Spore... is considered one of the most ambitious computer games of all time. The object is to CREATE life, not destroy it."
There you have it... cuz lord knows the objective of EVERY OTHER game out there is to rape babies.
hmmm i will happily be proven wrong (and hope i am!)
but the very fact its called 'The Games Our Children Play.' kinda colors my impressions of what to expect. gaming isnt a 'kids' thing!
Create life? I don't know about anyone else, but I left signifigant portions of my games galaxy completely devoid of life, I even ruined planets.
//It's educational and appealing to girls and families. //
So we're to assume that they think guys would rather play something violent and mindless? Signs of ignorance has already shown.
//Like it or not, 97% of teenagers play videogames.//
Wow, high percentage numbers and not one mention of the area they got it from. 97% of what, the town, the county, the state, the country, the world? Sounds like a set-up for the old excuse that games cause people to kill, seeing as how they can scare the crap out of the uninformed by saying 97% of the teens they meet or see will knife or gun them because they're raging psychopaths.
....Yeah, this ain't going to end well.
The 97% number was taken from a Pew research report, also posted here on GP in the relation to video games and teens. They got information from 1,102 children ranged in ages 12-17.
It's still a rather big number, 97%? Even if they used a limited number, I would think that they should include the report as well since it doesn't seem they mention it (if so, then I take back this comment)
Comment taken back, I just realized the tiny little mention of it right along side it. I pray one day a glorious edit button shall arrive here.
Signs of ignorance certainly are showing. The first line you misinterpreted actually implies that guys play most everything, whereas the games mentioned especially appeal to "girls and families" whom are not the usual gaming demographic.
Try some reading comprehension and leaving your videogame perseceution complex at home.

Doth thou take thy own advice? Re-read Critic, I said "So we're to assume that they think guys would rather play something violent and mindless?" Thus, I'm implying that they think guys are neanderthals and only play violent games or action games, or anything NOT involving puzzles or education.
Try taking some reading lessons before criticizing someone else's post and know what the hell they're talking about.
And before ANYONE says ANYTHING, YES, I do realize that I qouted the guy above me; I'm too damn used to another site's qouting system -_-; I admit I am guilty of not realizing simple things such as that all the damn time.
I have a feeling that this will either be a fair, open-minded feature or your typical anti-video game piece that we've come to know and love.
Either way, this should be interesting
Someone youtube this afterwards. I don't have cable...
They said it will be on the CBS website afterwards.
"Like it or not, 97% of teenagers play videogames."
Woah, now, why wouldn't we like it? Well, at least they're letting us know ahead of time the story will be biased and not news.
Well,I hope to watch this tonight, its going to be a good laugh to know former TODAY show newscaster couric for showing how unbaised truth and lies that the gaming industry has to offer, And if there is a chance, We might get to see that pervert Zelnick. Jack Thompson
Nice to see your true colors come to light. If it doesn't agree with your agenda, it is paid for by the video games industry. You a piece of work John Bruce.

Shouldn't you be job hunting instead of harassing people, oh wait Jack! The reason you can't get a job is because you harass people!
"We might get to see that pervert Zelnick."
Wow, so you feel you can call others perverts, but fail to recognize what you are for the pics you've sent for "court cases" as well as the games you've requested made that involved killing kids, retail employees, and a woman (whom I remember you requested that people urinate on her brain). If you even get a mention in this report, I hopes it's with a few laughs at the crazy used-to-be-a-"lawyer" (makes me sick to even try and say that with your lack of tack and ability in your "field") that's stuck in a ditch somewhere wishing his career would come back to him muttering about gamer kids trying to kill him. Sad thing to see for most people, but would bring a smile to my face anyways when it's you.
Zen
Initial capitals on "Couric", and "Today" does not have to be in all caps, sir.
Just FYI.
Oh, and unless you have incontrovertable proof of your referral of Zelnick as a "pervert", the comment should be retracted and an apology must be made by you.
Also, just FYI. Sir.
"And if there is a chance, We might get to see that pervert Zelnick"
You're the one logging into and downloading pictures of gay men, Jack. Pot, meet kettle.
The more and more I read of your comments (and it is more and more, you seem to have a lot of free time lately), the more I'm convinced you're a piece of satire constructed by a very stupid comedian.
Dude. Be quiet. We know you're a fake. SHUT. UP.
Since you're probably reading this anyway, Jack: Zelnick won't be on it, you won't be on it, it's not a conspiracy, you're just a jerk, get a life.
These Jack Thompson posts are becoming less fun because he rarely responds back to any of the allegations posted here.
..its going to be a good laugh to know former TODAY show newscaster couric for showing how unbaised truth and lies that the gaming industry has to offer...
So...the gaming industry offers unbiased truth and lies? Snarky comments are more effective when proofread first, Jack.
Yeah, right, "Jack". Have fun job hunting...if this really is you.

I fail to see how this is biased. They seem to want to talk about teenagers and popular games anybody would enjoy. I think you are just scared from the time Katie Couric made that Manhunt 2 comment.
I think this is going to be fair. It is going to talk about games like Spore and Rockband 2.
About that 97% that many people dismisses, that what the Pew Study said, not CBS themselves. Remember, they are talking every form of video games which includes flash games.
CBS is own by Viacom. You guys are really setting your hopes up too high.
In all seriousness, I hope this report brings a postive light on gaming, that it's an artform and not a child's toy.
Sorry Jack, this isn't Faux News doing this report!
Nevermind that Newscorp owns BOTH Fox News and IGN.com....
And it hasn't just been one news outlet that has taken shots at video games. Just wait for your next local blame the game story.
Gawd, I hate katie couric... it's a christmas miracle that she hasn't drowned while drinking a glass of water :p
Considering how they handled a story they did from earlier this year and Couric's little stupid quip at the end, I doubt it.
Lets assume that Fox airs one of the most shining Video Game specials ever created. They bash down the morons, show how helpful the games can be, prove that its not the games, its the parents, etc.
Even if they did ALL of that, most of you would still be on the "F*** Fox* Bandwagon. No matter what they do, its lose-lose for Fox.
They have it coming though.
Actually, it would be more of a "WTF!!!!" second take.

Thank you Knight for sharing in that thought.
It's a pity that the media doesn't even seem to care (or... um... you know, acknowledge) that adults also play video games. Many of us who played games as kids are still playing them, and we do, in fact outnumber the teen market last I checked the statistics.
It could be that they've kept the outdated bias that only kids play videogames, because adults have better things to do *insert sarcasm here*.
Well, I won't be watching that. But, what else is new? CBS is a piece of shit and so is Couric's face.
I have a nasty feeling this will end up devolving into Fox News' "Se"Xbox scandal II
I just hope I'm wrong. >.<
"It's educational and appealing to girls and families."
I wonder why they didn't put this in their marketing campaign....
I'm so curious of one of these days we will see a hardcore adults game with emotional and political issues shown. I just don't think that people out their know that there are a lot of games that exist that try to say something. Not saying this show is bad. It's talking about games that kids play afterall, but eventually I would love to see some serious discussion on adult games.
I'm going to be more optimistic, maybe this will profile games as they are: an engaging form of entertainment. I'm tired of violent games and school shootings (however false) being the vehicles that put video games in the news, this might actually improve the image of gaming, if the program doesn't go the "GTA & Manhunt OMG!" route that is.
Katie Couric? No...no thanks...
-Remember kids, personal responsibility is for losers! For information on games and psychology, look up: Jonathan Freedman(2002)Block & Crain(2007) Just to name a few...
It'd be nice if they mentioned that the violent crime rate dropped again, but I wont hold my breath. You would expect Couric and CBS News (with its leftist liberal slant ) to bash violent video games. But we'll see.
"leftist liberal slant"? Try again, bud. But this time, try turning more "right" than "left".

You won't like what CBS has to say about the effects of video games!
Lulwut girls? Like girls only like that kind of video game? Like it would appeal to girls more then males?
It was 3 minutes long??? 0_o
Saw it. Was pretty good. Short, but good. It was a little biased, though: it still had that "games are for kids" vibe, but at least they didn't attack like they usually do.

*roll* Yeah cuz guys are all homicidal maniacs and only play GTA.
They touched on it again this morning on Boston's local CBS news, specifically the part that 97% play games, and they're more politically inclined, likely to give to charity, blah blah. But then, the two were like:
"Well, i guess that means all of them, right?"
"I suppose it depends on the game."
"Yeah, it's not true if it's... Vice City, or those games where you beat up people."
Something like that. I just facepalmed there. You 'beat up' people in a lot of games.
Nintendo is indeed selling SOME of these on the Virtual Console but not even close to all of them. While i agree in part to his piracy he was filling a market that Nintendo failed to recognize. Maybe someone doesnt want to buy a Wii. maybe they just want a console with 50 - 100 NES games on them?? maybe just maybe?
but no Nintendo wants everyone araba kiralama to buy the Wii. thats their excuse but thats not what copyright is supposed to protect. i am real sure that the makers of 10 yard fight were losing sleep because they were missing out on their $0.00025 worth because they didnt get royalties from this player. *smirk*
my question is, should Super Mario Bros. be banned from public domain forever? isnt 23 years enough time for Nintendo to have made their profits?
If you have followed the Steamboat Willie case regarding Mickey Mouse you can rest in your bed well at night knowing that the MOUSE will still be under copyright law, away from public domain after your great grandchildren are in nursing homes. That is beyond ridiculous dont you think??
Gallagher can araç kiralama say all he wants, but I strongly rent a car believe it's due to his crappy leadership and E3 being a joke. ESA's Board of Directors need to find a way to get out rent a car of this horrid contract with this Bush cronie before there's no one left on the Board.
Btw, I think Atari and Midway will drop out too, but mostly travesti because these guys have done nothing ttnet vitamin or little and need to start saving costs.
YES.
Now I don't have to get off my ass for the important shit anymore!
Whats next, ordering pizza from Xbox live?
Wait... I think that sounds like a good idea.
But I think voting should MAKE you get off your ass, and see outside or a second while you go vote. I mean, your picking the president of the United States of America for God's Sake... least you can do is drive down there and punch out a card.
Thanks good job;
