The ESA Foundation has announced that legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto will be honored with the 2009 ESA Champion Award at the charitable organization's annual Nite to Unite for Kids on October 22nd in San Francisco.
ESA CEO Michael Gallagher lauded Miyamoto in a press release:
Miyamoto-san truly has defined video games as we know them today. With his remarkable creativity and passion for fun, family entertainment, Miyamoto-san and his team at Nintendo have produced many iconic games that appeal to audiences of all ages.
Past champions include George Lucas, as well as GameStop’s Dan DeMatteo, Electronic Arts’ Bing Gordon, Toys ‘R Us’ Michael Goldstein, Nintendo's Howard Lincoln, Sega's Isao Ogawa, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Ken Kutaragi, and Electronic Boutique’s Jeffery Griffiths.

I'm all for freedom of ttnet vitamin speech and allowing rent a car game makers to put whatever they want in games, but there's one thing about this app that has me scratching my head. To be fair, Miyamoto did bring the videogame industry back from the dead with his plucky italian plumber, but I can see where you're coming from.Know who I'd like to see celebrated from time to time? How about the Ratchet & Clank game designers? How about the people who wrote the scenario for Call of Duty 4? How about Nippon Ichi getting an award for keeping an old school genre alive with new innovations? How about we get SOMEONE Tiffany Jewellery besides the old "gaming goto" up on a stage. I mean, think about it. You know, when people want to try and appear hip and in the know about gaming, they whip out the Shigeru Miyamoto. It's the goto command of gaming awards and frankly, it's become a joke to me. In no other media do we focus so long and so hard on a select few. And the sad part? A vast majority of these awards are based on things WAY in the past.
Know who I'd like to see celebrated from time to time? How about the Ratchet & Clank game designers? How about the people who wrote the scenario for Call of Duty 4? How about Nippon Ichi getting an award for keeping an old school genre alive with new innovations? How about we get SOMEONE besides the old "gaming goto" up on a stage. I mean, think about it. There could be someone to come along and completely change the way we think about games, revolutionize the industry, give it mainstream appeal without all the pandering, and give the game industry their Citizen Kane, and still he would stand in the shadow of Miyamoto because Miyamoto created Mario...

Such a thing would be nice. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible in the games industry's current state. Currently in the Games industry, the publishers are actively trying to hide the people who make the games. They do not have complete credits. They don't let people talk to the media. They don't want anyone to know who makes the games. They do this under the guise of hiding their employees from poaching. Honestly, I couldn't tell you who designed Ratchet and Clank.
Secondly, any wards we currently have are provided by either a) the games industry itself or b) fanboys who want their favorite developers to get awards.
What is needed is an award group who has no ties to the games industry and will base awards on actual creative and technical achievement.
