French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

September 22, 2008 -

The Daily Mail reports that a 13-year-old French boy is under arrest in Lyon, charged with committing arson against several cars.

A Lyon police spokesman told the newspaper:

He said he played the game for a few hours, then wanted to go out and what it felt like to burn out some cars. This kind of entertainment is clearly having a negative effect on some young people.

There's an obvious accuracy problem in the story, however. See if you can spot it:

The 13-year-old schoolboy used petrol to set light to three vehicles after playing on the violent GTA 4: Liberty City game on his home PC.

If you said, "Wait, the PC version of GTA IV doesn't even ship until November 21st in Europe," go to the head of the class.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

I'm all for freedom of ttnet vitamin speech and allowing rent a car game makers to put whatever they want in games, but there's one thing about this app that has me scratching my head.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but from araç kiralama the previous article araba kiralama on this I gathered that players can use Google maps in-game to find the other (real-life?) dealers in their area.  If this is the case, has travesti anyone considered what's stopping someone from using this app to actually move drugs between hands for reals?

But majority araba kiralama of their outrage araç kiralama stems from what it could DO TO children, not the content itself.  Talk to one of these people and you'll find they don't think any books kiralık araba should be banned from children.  Mention American Psycho and they talk about kiralık araç the redeeming value of using imagination to construct a story.  Reading, no matter what the content, is largely viewed as a consequenceless activity for people of any age.  The reason why I mention American Psycho is because of the content itself.  Gaming never has and likely never will have any scenes where someone has sex with a severed head.  Not gonna happen.  Yet despite this, they'll fight tooth and nail to protect their children from two boys kissing in Bully but whatever they read is harmless... yeah.

The entire arguement is kiralık oto based upon a social normality inflicted by luddites who can't figure out the controls for Halo so it's frightening and terrifying and obviously the cause of youth violence on the rise even though, in reality, it's in decline (which is actually a HUGE suprise given minibüs kiralama the economies status).  In  a perfect world, we would have parents that actually parent.  The idea of sales restrictions on media on oto kiralama any form to accomidate parental unwillingness to get involved with their child's life is the real problem to me.  Here I am, 32 years old, and being held up at a self-scan rent a car needing to show ID before I can buy a $10 M rated game all because Soccer Momthra can't be bothered to look at the crap Billy Genericallystupidson does in his free time.  It's too hard for her, so I have to suffer?

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

wrote a nice long piece about how games could possibly be used as an outlet for the violent not causing them to be violent as a result but the spam filter doesn't like me

Note: I was going to make a comment about JT preaching to groups full of those with a mental condition that makes them believe anything they are told as the truth but when I googled the phrase "mental condition where they "believe anything they are told"" it came up with lots of pages discussing religion, spooky that.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Thompson likes junk science. He doesn't read what proves him wrong, and he takes gamers without criminal records as being "statistically insignificant". When he said this on a radio show, my jaw dropped. This is like throwing away over 90% of your experiment's results because they don't fit in with your predictions.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

A lil bit of random lore about the French, based on personal observations.

Since May '68, torching cars in France is like Football for the U.S. : the national sport.

A videogame is really just another generic reason why this fellow burned a few cars down, especially if the news comes from France, alas.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

"The real question I would like to pose to Mr. Thompson is this:"

Thompson has never really bothered reading anything that proves him wrong, especially when it's been written logically (which is most of the time).

I personally think that the best way of shutting him up is to ignore whatever he posts (JT: BRAHGRAHGRAH! User: I can't really see the point of DRM when pirates can easily disable it and play the game with far more convenience than legitimate customers.)

But it can be a little difficult to not reply to the hillarious bullshit that JT frequently types.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Thompson has never really bothered reading anything that proves him wrong, especially when it's been written logically (which is most of the time).

No, I think he does read though all these comments, while quickly blocking it all out by "they are stupid" type reasoning.

Of course that is what makes it soooo rewarding when he does, even more so when replying he doesn't even address anything you said.  Kind of like with trolling, you know you must have struck a nerve somewhere to get such a reaction from him....

So I keep pointing out his hypocrisy, lies, ironic actions, etc as long as he keeps ignoring them(i.e. "I do debate" while ignoring our points/questions which would do him great damage in answering...).

Maybe next time I will post a "questions/points JT refuses to answer" list or try pulling the same junk he did with Janet Reno.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Ummm, does anyone remember that a few years back disaffected young ethnic Algerians in France went on a spree of burning cars and vandalizing buildings in angry protest to their economic lot?  If there's ANYWHERE a young person might have picked up the idea to burn a car, it was probably during the general riots that were going on just a little while back.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

The real question I would like to pose to Mr. Thompson is this:

The kid is 13 years old.  Are you seriously implying that he A) didn't know the difference between right and wrong or B) knows the difference, but GTA is such a corrupting influence that he forgot or ignored it to go commit these crimes?

In regards to A, before you say something along the lines of "Well, maybe this kid was never taught the difference," let me say this.  That would only help my argument, that the blame lies less with the game and overwhelmingly more with parents and mentors of this kid.  You have kids, I am to understand, and I assume they are at least this age if not older.  Do they understand the difference between right and wrong (or did they by that age if they are significantly older), and that the things they see in the movies, in games, and on T.V. aren't proper behavior?  If they do, is it because your family has instilled that understanding in them, or was it because you only let them watch Blues Clues and Teletubbies, who taught them to share and play nice?  13 years old is about 7th or 8th grade, correct?  I can state with no doubt that I knew the difference at that point in my life, and that going out and setting cars on fire was a really bad idea.

With regards to B, the evidence is overwhelmingly against this conclusion.  Literally millions of people around the world have played any of the numerous GTA games.  If it was so corrupting as to cause this kind of degeneration in a persons ability to distinguish the difference between right and wrong, and circumvent their moral compass, then I believe there would be a much, MUCH greater degree of this kind of behavior occuring everywhere.

I know Mr. Thompson probably won't read this, as I am a little late posting, but let me sum up here, anyway.  Stop trying to lay the blame on an object and being a part of the problem, Mr. Thompson.  You are propagating the growing social mindset of no personal responsibility or accountability, and aiding the festering generation of young people who think that mommy and daddy will always be there to hand them whatever they need, and to find something external that is at fault for their flaws.  It does them no favors, and it certainly doesn't do our country or our world any favors.  You want to go on a moral crusade?  Fine.  Start getting parents to instill that sense of morality in their kids, and teach them personal accountability.  Get parents to stop using the T.V. as their babysitter, and start spending time with their kids and learning to understand how their kids express their emotions.  That's how you will fix these problems.

Again, I know Mr. Thompson probably won't come back to this topic, as I am late getting here, so I will probably reiterate it in relevant topics in the future.  Bear with me, Dennis. :D

Of all the crazy articles I’ve seen printed in The Daily Mail, this has to rank about middle.

If you’re wondering what #1 is, it would be their ‘whites banned from jobs’ headline a few months back.

Seriously, you really think the crap they post about computer games is bad? Try going to ww.mailonline.com and reading some of the stories they write about English celebrities, immigrants, Emo music and multiculturalism.

Actually, if any of you want to see how our beloved national gutter rag tabloids actually work, try www.5cc.blogspot.com.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

So is the Daily Mail where English majors go when they flunk class for turning in half-assed reports they don't bother to research?

"Ah shit, I got 30 minutes to Google some information and make it seem like I wrote it." As I've seen people frantically type on the keyboard in school computer labs, it sounds just like the way the Daily Mail writes many of their stories.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

After a bit of searching I have so far found this article on Gamepolitics, Kotaku, and the Mail online website... it's clearly headlin breaking news .........

The top google searches for the story were gamepolitics and kotaku, kind makes you wonder if they hadn't reported it would anyone even know.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

So, wrong game, wrong platform, and wrong reason?

Sorry, my brain just went and exploded, I was almost about to say something so blasphemous that the universe would explode and be re-created with a race of oven mits and mentally retarded monkeys.

Seriously, today's parents aren't doing a good job at parenting if this kind of crap happens.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

This is always so sad.  People have always been afraid of what is new and convinced that its leading kids on the road to perdition.  Hopefully in another 10 years or so we won't have media outlets and politicians looking for reasons to blame games for the world's woes.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

I hope not, because that will only happen when humanity is wiped out.
Well, now that I think about it, that might not be too bad...

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

I'm getting tired of the same tune.  Can't they play something else?

Assuming the inacuracies in the article were actually from the Daily Mail...well I'm fabbergasted as to how they were so quick mess things up, let alone the grammatical errors littered throughout the article.

Do I get extra credit for pointing out that they got the name wrong?  There's no subtitle, you know.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Very good, I hope they listen/read and make a few changes...No, ALOT of changes to that story.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Regarding your GTA IV story:

After reading your absolutely hilarious story (linked from www.gamepolitics.com) I have to say, either you guys have some serious factual errors and do not care to rectify them, or you have some top class comedians working for you!

In the (hopefully unlikely event) that it is the former, may I point out that:

FOR GODS SAKE THERE ARE NO POINTS IN GTA! THERE NEVER HAVE BEEN AND THERE NEVER WILL BE!
(that doesn't include the old Top-Down GTA games)

GTA isn't on PC, it is on the XBox 360 Gaming system and the PS3 glorified media center, I know having your facts straight isn't top priority on a conservative tabloid, but it doesn't help issues when the sheep that read your news are fed this sort of stuff and make some choices in life based upon the falsehoods which are featured in your publication,

GTA, nor any other game to my extensive knowledge features information on the assembly and operation of molotov cocktails, therefore that point is also moot.

I hope you can get back to me regarding these issues, or show some proper journalistic integrity and issue a retraction, apologising for the falsehoods mentioned earlier.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

My question is, Where are the parents?

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Given the violent riots in Paris suburbs some time ago, complete with car burnings and all, I don't think any French kid would have to resort to a video game to get the idea.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Killian, you make a good point with your "Just don't accept things as facts" point, however at the same time we are, all of us, predisposed to believe that:

1) Jack is always wrong

2) Videogames are always the victim

3) The people who are working against us have serious mental problems

So I think we, ourselves have to sometimes question ourselves on our thoughts, I know this is gonna be an unpopular idea really, but seriously, we should consider:

1) What REALLY caused this kid to go mental and molotov cars?

2) What sources of information were available to instruct the kid on the effective construction/operation of this simple tool? (I know it is a no brainer really, I have made my fair share for fun, never used em like...)

3) Is there a possibility that videogames could have been in any way involved, despite the news article's obvious lack of understanding on the issue, that does not discount videogames from the argument entirely does it? That is essentially like someone taking Jacky T to court, someone in the stands pointing out that he is a douche, then him saying "Ha, you insulted me, that gives me a free ticket out of here!"... Actually that doesn't sound too far from reality now :D

4) If videogames were involved, how much so? Saying they are to blame is ludicrous, no one would blame the bible for the thousands of wars that have been waged in the name of our lord Jesus Christ... OH SHI- (no seriously, even as a Christian myself, I am aware of the hypocrisy, which is why I have no respect for the current institution of the church)

5) Could this have been avoided? would the measures that may have been taken that would have prevented the occurance justify the actions being comitted?

I think, even though Jack here is simply gonna turn up to any newspost on GP and spew his bile on it, we should refrain from being simply anti- Jacks, we should, instead of simply using his own faulty logic back at him, we should take a reasoned approach to the things he is saying and consider them before our brains shut down due to the absolute stupidity contained within his posts convincing your brain that it was no longer needed.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Excellent point, Pominator. I agree with you one hundred percent...However...

To not jump on Thompson when he rears his ugly head around here seems to be like trying to stop a basic impulse. It's true: we've been conditioned to jump on Thompson whenever he speaks, no matter what he's talking about, or how much (or little) sense he is making.

Plus, since our pasttime is the new movies/music/books/religion/whatever that others will use as a scapegoat, we normally feel that when that thing we love so much is under attack, we must protect it patriotically and until the bitter end--and we should! But until our medium is accepted everywhere as a true source of entertainment, we'll always have our guards up. I'm not saying it's a good thing, nor that we shouldn't love and protect our games; it's just that to change such impulsive behavior will be nothing short of an 89-degree uphill bike ride with cinderblock tires.

If this were a perfect world, all the questions you suggested would be asked in every post, members would be tirelessly trying to find answers, and ugly, pathetic comments from trolls like Thompson would go completely ignored. Answers to those questions would be the undeniable products of throrough, unbiased, and collaborative efforts. However, this is not a perfect world: shit happens, people lose their goddamn minds all the time, and the bile of idiots will not go unignored, yet will also not be instantly defeated with a simple-yet-epic rush of facts and logic. This is sad, but true.

Yet hope should not be lost; with growth comes knowledge and (most of the time) maturity. We do not contain the minds of children, but we should still strive to better ourselves. And yes, I do hope for the day that others can look upon our medium and say, "Yes, that is a true form of entertainment; it has its flaws, but then again, what doesn't?" Until then, well....

Well, anyways, you brought up an excellent point. It's definitely an epic win on your part. Game on, brother/sister.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

You know it is possible that the guy pirated the game.

But still if the guy wanted to see what cars look like blowing up we have the internet. If he can't find the internet (unlikely) there's always the option of buying the cheapest car you can find and using that.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Actually he couldn't have pirated it. It won't be released on PC in the US until November 18th. That's a little far in advance for even a pirated copy.

Yeah, this is all true because Molotov cocktails didn't exist prior to GTA and are impossible to make unless you've got a science degree or once caught a glimpse of GTA.

Actually I think that kids got the idea to do this from you talking about it on NBC's Today show in... etc etc etc.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

You didn't read the story did you Jack?

It just said the cars were set on fire with petrol, it doesn't mention Molotov Cocktails at all.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

He played GTA (any version, doesn't matter; they all have molotov cocktails)

Shows what you know, odododo, the first one doesn't have any Molotov Cocktails in it.

Sorry odododo with a dodo brain, copycatting is indeed an interesting part of the story but it's nothing more. You clearly say that the kid is at fault because in your words, he played GTA and he copycatted it.

And yes, you were right again, whoopdedoo. But it makes as much sense as me saying "I was right" after seeing my winning pick 4 numbers come up, after hundreds of failed tries.

Re: French Lad Torches Cars, GTA IV Blamed, But...

Mr. Thompson, you were not on the Today Show, you were not on World News Tonight, you were on 60 Minutes and Fox News, the latter of which about a million times uncontested because of that network's knack for being incredibly politically biased and overall idiotic. Get your own history right. It's the only thing you do halfway towards well.

He's not posting your federal civil rights action against those people who you're claiming have not one loyalty oath among them (seriously, get original with your accusations for once) because it has nothing to do with video games. This site is CALLED 'gamepolitics.' Duh. What was in that filing you posted (forget the fact that it was thrown out because you were sanctioned for a moment. Not that you don't do that all the time anyway.) just mentioned the same things you've been lying about for the past ten years. It's old news. There was no need to report it.

The only reason he posted that thing about Hurricane Ike (which you were kinda wrong about, by the way. It hit Texas, not Florida. Guess you don't make a good meteorologist after all, since you can't spot the 'sexy' hurricanes. Those are your words, not mine.) was because he had no bloody clue WHAT it was about until he had a look around. And it was a slow news day back then.

Other, more important people already know about your soon-to-be-trashed lawsuit. It's not news to Dennis or anyone else. Practice what you preach, you obsessive senile prick: Grow up and get a life.
